i'm frances rivera. all eyes on former fbi director james comey's high profile testimony with headlines across the country detailing his allegations against president trump. reaction was mixed. more conservative media rallied around the president criticizing comey's performance. nbc news received new information about attorney general jeff sessions, a source says after his public testimony comey privately told senators about a possible third interaction between sessions and russian officials. sources also tell us that this month president trump son-in-law jared kushner is expected to meet with and provide documents to members of the senate intelligence committee as it conducts its russia investigation. hallie jackson has more on the block buster hearing. >> reporter: commanding a spotlight entirely his, james comey turned it on to the president, describing donald trump as not truthful and not credible. >>

might lie about our meeting. >> reporter: memos provided the basis of james comey's testimony dramatic, compelling. controversial. >> did the president at any time ask you to stop the fbi investigation into russian involvement in the 2016 elections. >> not to my understanding, no. >> reporter: less conclusive whenned about michael flynn after testifying that he hoped that comey would let flynn go. >> i took it as a direction. the president of the united states with me alone saying i hope this, i took it as this is what he wants me to do. i didn't obey that but that's the way i took it. >> but that's not what he said. >> correct. >> he said i hope. >> those are exact words, correct. >> you sense that the president was trying to obstruct justice? >> i'm sure the special counsel will work to what the m tension was and whether that's an offense. >> that a bombshell implying the special counsel is looking at wi

directing investigation. >> why didn't you say mr. president this is wrong. >> if i were stronger i would have. i was so stunned by the conversation that i just took it in. >> another startling revelation came in this acknowledgement from comey about the conversation he documented related to flynn. >> i asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. i asked him to because i thought that might prompt the appoint it of a special counsel. >> reporter: that of course ultimately happened. all of it triggered by a tweet, the president who apparently suspected comey was behind that leak, wrote on may 12th, james comey better hope there are no tapes of our conversation before he starts leaking to the press. >> look, i've seen the tweet about tapes, lordy i hope there are tapes. if he did my feelings aren't hurt, release all the tapes. i'm good with it. >> reporter: comey clearly frustrated by the president's explanation for firing him. >> the at

defame me and more importantly the fbi saying the organization was in disawe ray. those were lies plain and simple. >> hallie jackson reporting there. president trump's team was ready to fire back at comey. just minutes after he finished testifying the president's outside counsel gave a public address rebuking the fired fbi director. peter alexander has those details. >> the president feels completely vindicated and is eager to continue moving forward with his agenda with the business of this country wand this public cloud removed. >> reporter: kasowitz accusing comey lying about mr. trump's demapped for loyalty. >> the president never in form or substance directed or suggested that mr. comey stop investigating any one. >> reporter: that dispute could easily be settled if the president released secret tapes he suggested exist but is yet to

produce. kasowitz also seizing on other points including the statement that comey told mr. trump he was not personally under investigation. >> mr. comey has now finally confirmed publicly what he repeatedly told president trump privately. >> reporter: the veteran trial lawyer attacking comey for making public privileged communications with the president. >> mr. comey has now admitted that he is one of these leakers. >> reporter: the president's son don jr. did tweet, flynn stuff is bs, adding very far from any kind of coercion or influence and certainly not obstruction. the strategy going forward veterans insist leave the russia investigation to the lawyers. >> i would allow the white house to be focused on helping the president do the job of being president. and to me that's most important. don't get wrapped around the axle of the investigation. >> that was peter alexander reporting. now joined by reporter sarah fisher, sarah, appreciate you being with me.

damage to come out of the hearings. comey says trump lied in this in saying that the comments about with flynn were direction, but then you also have comey who said that he leaked the information in those memos about those discussions. what's the worst there to come out of that? >> i think the worst thing to come out of that is the former as opposed to the latter. at this point trump potentially lying has much further implications than potentially comey trying to salvage investigation on better behalf of the good, so i think at this point the bigger concern is whether or not donald trump did have criminal intent and whether or not his lies would lead one to that conclusion. >> that's the question here. your thoughts, watching this and hearing this testimony, are you saying whoa, this is teetering on obstruction of justice. >> experts are divided. everyone agrees this was a

understanding the political system. we're seeing that over and over until yesterday's hearing was continuing to tweet, to talk fw the investigation, something that legal advisers told the president don't do, stay silent. so we know that he doesn't have great understanding of how the political system works, and how this type of a situation should be playing out. whether or not he had exact criminal intent here is still under question and that will be what determines what happens going forward. >> also fueling why james comey saying hey lordy, i hope there are tapes, talking about that before the hearing, after the hearing. here's when the tapes were brought up. >> i've seen the tweet about tapes, lordy i hope there are tapes. >> president trump, if you disagree with anything the director said today, play the tapes for all of america to hear. or, admit that there were no tapes. >> then huckabee sanders saying we'll look for the tapes, yeah,
4:08 am
what's the implication of those tapes if there are tapes? >> if there are tapes what we want to know is exact language that the president supposedly used to indicate to former fbi director james comey that he wanted there to be intervention between the russian and flynn investigation. the wording there is key. whether or not the new answered ang proves that trump asked him to do that or whether it could have been implied. >> quickly we'll see donald trump is going to tweet before that time, 6:13 a.m. eastern, if he doesn't it would be his longest drought. right. and that he has this meeting with the remaining president later we'll see if they talk about it then. >> we'll see. as you mentioned this is a trend with donald trump any time there tends to be bad news, he tends to retreat from twitter. so we'll see what happens the next few hours. >> watch the twitter feeds. thank you so much. president trump will face the media later today as we were talking about whe
