to be whatever they can to stay cool. >> dancing in the sprinklers. >> megan mcgrath is giving us tips on how you can stay safe if you plan to be outside. hi, megan. great to see you. >> reporter: good morning, guys. yeah, we're here at the have i naen metro station. right now it's not too bad. i checked the temperature a little while ago, 69 degrees. swee hawe have a very nice bree. mid 90s, that's what we're expecting. folks need to take a couple of precautions out there. use some common sense as the mercury starts to rise later this afternoon. now lots of people will be hanging out at pools and maybe running through sprinklers. another great place to be when it gets hot like this is around the water. it tends to be a little bit cooler in those spots, but not necessarily an option for everyone. if you are going to be out and about today, here are a couple of tips for

activity if you can. stay in the air conditioning as much as possible. also, very important to stay hydrated. grab a water bottle with you before you leave the house. very important to stay hydrated. also, keep pets inside and if you have to exercise, if you're one of those hard core foekts, the advice here is exercise either early in the morning before it gets too hot or wait until the sun goes down and it cools off later in the evening. but we are here at the metro station. we're going to be talking to folks getting their strategies and their tips. i'll have that for you coming up later on in the show. back to you guys. >> megan, thank you. right now it is unclear when uproar lounge and restaurant will reopen after part of the roof started to bow. this was the scene on florida avenue in northwest d.c. yesterday afternoon. uproar opened a little over a year ago. we're told the rooftop deck was part of the new area that started to shift. they came out to s

weight compromised the floor support. no one was hurt. a maryland state trooper hit by a suspected drunk driver. that trooper is out of the hospital. he was working an accident on pennsylvania avenue in upper marlboro around 3:30 sunday morning when his patrol car was hit from behind. police say the driver, chris dent, exhibited signs of being under the influence after that accident. >> people across the country remembering the victims and their families this morning one year after the deadly mass shooting at pulse nightclub in orlando. 49 people died when a gunman went on a shooting rampage inside of the gay nightclub. it was the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. on the somber occasion mourners are marking the fateful day with flowers and candles. there is a public memorial near the club now, but a high tech memorial is in the works so that the victims will never be

forgotten. the names of each pulse nightclub victim were read outloud during yesterday's pride festival and concert. that concert went late into the night in downtown d.c. thousands packed on to pennsylvania avenue for that annual celebration of pride and unity. the crowd stayed throughout the day despite the extreme heat out there. many at the festival marched through the streets in the equality march sunday morning. they passed the white house and talked about why there is a call for action. >> but i think also what's reelingly important to note is that what we're trying to fight against is the roll back of some of the wins that we've already had. >> now many of the people who attended tell us they are thankful that the festival continues to grow each year. nbc 4 was a proud partner of capital pride. that's tom sherwood and chris gordon passing out t-shirts. want to thank all of you for showing us all of y

episcopal church. be prepared to hand over some money if you want to park on the national mall. >> meters along many popular sflechs downtown d.c. that were once all free. transportation reporter adam tuss checking out the changes this morning. hi, adam. >> reporter: good morning, angie. for a long time this used to be one of the perks around the national mall. these new multi-space meters, they are in effect around the national mall. these activate today. there is no warning period. these are now in effect these parking meters here. they're going to cost you about $2 per hour to park here and you have a max day of three hours when you pay here. so $2 and you get to stay for three hours. you have multiple payment options. you can use your park mobile app or you

5:13. here's a look at some of the morning's top stories. >> more than half a million people voted for statehood in yesterday's referendum in puerto rico, but it was the lowest level of participation there since 1967. puerto rico is a u.s. territory. congress will have the final changes in any changes. he was found responsible for the death of bob by christikris brown. nick gordon is accused of abusing his new girlfriend. the woman told

police that they were arguing when he punched her and wouldn't let her leave. gordon was arrested and released and ordered to wear a gps monitor and stay away from the apartment where it happened. the terrorist attacks united people in london. they were celebrating diversity and solidarity. unity day was set up last year after a surge of hate crimes before the brexit vote. it is a day of remembrance in orlando and across the country. it's been one year since the terrorist stormed into the pulse nightclub and killed 49 people. over the weekend mourners have been honoring those killed. the memories of that tragic night still haunt so many people, and dozens live with the wounds from that shooting. nbc's sarah rosario is live in orlando with a look at a day that's being called orlando united day.

>> reporter: good morning, aaron and angie. that's right. today is being considered orlando united day. it is the culmination of a weekend tribute to the 49 men and women killed at this club a year ago today and in the aftermath of that shooting, we saw the city of orlando come together. their motto, we will not let hate win. a message they continue to spread as they hon be nor and remember those victims. and today one year later pulse nightclub stands as a public memorial. hundreds of people coming out to pay tribute. this as survivors, families and loved ones of the dead are still struggling. for many of them there are haunting memories that still linger. it's the deadliest terror attack on u.s. soil since 9/11. the doors of this gay nightclub haven't opened since. it serves as a symbol of love, resilience and unity. as part of orlando united day, today is cde

you're watching "news 4 today." summer travelers have reason to smile after reports of gas prices holding pretty steady. now they've only gone up half a penny in the last three weeks. usually around this time of year gas prices rise. the average regular price dropped about half a cent to $2.40 so the small change reflects stable worldwide prices. analysts say we are likely to see further drops in retail gas prices. some guys really can't throw down in the kitchen, you know. check it out, a group of amateur and celebrity male chefs showed off their cooking skills. shamari stone was the guest chef at the men who cook fund-raiser. they whipped up treats like mag aronne any and cheese at the university of district of columbia. this event helps

general jeff sessions' testimony tomorrow before the senate intelligence committee. news 4's edward lawrence joins us live from capitol hill. edward, what kinds of questions is sessions likely to face and will we be able to see it? >> reporter: that's the big question. will we be able to see it. the senate intelligence committee has the option to take this into a closed session. jeff sessions, the attorney general, was supposed to already be testifying in front of the house and senate appropriations committee on tuesday. that is an open public hearing. again, by moving over to the senate intelligence committee he has the option of going behind closed doors, and some evare saying that's the reason he want today do this. jeff sessions is expected to handle questions about his meeting with the russians and also deal with questions about whether the president interfered with the russia probe. angie, aaron? >> thank you, edward. it is a revealing interview you will see only h o
