we are definitely already feeling the heat. these metro riders at dupont circle and farrington north have been dealing with cooling issues. they've had fans set up. this is a problem that's been going on for years, guys. the problem is that metro has cooling systems known as chillers. they're not really air conditioners. they get cool air over pipes. then it gets pumped into the metro system. these have been leaking over the last couple of years. so metro has had to shut the whole system off. people are dealing with hot, sweltering conditions and on a day like today when it gets to 90 and above, it is going to be really hot in the stations. the good news is metro has just installed a temporary fix for this problem. they're working on it right now. it should be in place by the end of this month, but that means we've got another couple of weeks before a cooling

the countdown is on until the attorney general speaks before the senate intelligence committee. that's set for 2:30 this afternoon. it will be a public hearing. sessions will likely respond to what former fbi director james comey said before the same committee last week. comey raised questions when he said that he and the bureau believed sessions was going to recuse himself from the russia investigation for reasons he couldn't say in public. now coming up news 4's edward lawrence will have a look at what other questions attorney general sessions is likely to get. we've been watching attorney sessions testimony. you can watch live in the nbc washington app. 5:05. in about an hour you can cast your vote in virginia's hotly contested primary race. the spotlight, we know, is on the top of the ticket, the governor's race. on the governor's side, tom pariello and ralph northum are in a tight battle. three candidates on the republican ticket, ed gils

faster. lawmakers are considering a new bus line and bus lane. the rapid transit buses would run 6.7 miles between the rockville and wheaton metro stations. the lines would allow for larger buses to travel in lanes bypassing traffic. we know today montgomery county council is expected to choose a preferred route for this line. also on the agenda, the council will review a plan that would let you park in the same spot for a lot longer. you could see you are allowed to leave your county in for a loss. the way it sends, you aren't supposed to park in those spaces for more than 24 hours at a time. if it does pass, it will be discussed. how far would you go for kids with cancer? one northern virginia dad plans to go the distance by going cross-country for cancer. we havehe

>> reporter: aaron, angie, talk about a case of major endurance, check this out. this father is biking from san diego to annapolis and he says it's going to go and be done in 12 hours. he's doing this to raise money for his non-property called hope camp. he got the idea when his son matt was battling leukemia, and now he's dedicating each day of this race to a child with cancer. many of the kids reached out to him with letters inspiring him all along the way. >> i mean, i'm just trying to get to the finish line in annapolis, maryland. these kids are fighting their own mortality. they're fighting for their own survival. if there's ever a time that i need inspiration i think of his son matt is joining him along the race as a videographer and

a. i woman walked into the lobby of the quality inn covered in blood yesterday. she told police a man in her room shot her. then after two hours trying to talk with that man, police forced their way into that room and found him shot but still alive. police say it looks like he may have shot himself. investigators say both victims checked into the hotel together and were traveling from new york. neighbors called her the best mom. now police in vienna, virginia, say two deaths appear to be the result of a murder/suicide. officers say 53-year-old raffl tight tas stabbed his ex-wife sabrina at her home and shot himself a couple of blocks away in his own backyard. they had twin girls. the girls were not hurt. they're holding-- we're working for

it is now up to a judge to determine whether the penn state fraternity brothers will go on trial for the death of a pledge. video footage was played in court that showed timothy piazza being told to drink and then falling several times, including down a flight of stairs. no one called for help until the next morning. piazza later died of a traumatic brain injury. some of the students are charged with involuntary manslaughter. looks like crooks are using official phone numbers trying to steal from folks doing the right thing. according to wtopu.s. capitol police numbers are being used in a spoofing scam. spoofing is when you actually get a call from a number that's not what it

what officials want you to be aware of the next time your phone rings. and it's going to be a hot one, especially for certain metro riders. some of you won't have any chance of cooling off while you wait for your train. things are heating up outside. that means it is a weather alert day here, too. we'll get to chuck in just a minute. first though, let's check in with adam who is checking in on hot metro stations. adam? >> reporter: that's right, aaron. they don't have a cooling system. let me walk you around here show you what's going on. 76 degrees on the board this morning at 5:48. they always say, hey, it is coolest right before the dawn. it is 76 right now. you can be sure it is going to go up. we are expecting temperatures in the 90s today. anyone using dupont circle or faraget north should prepare for hot conditions. here's what you need to know about these stations. th

cools these stations is offline. a temporary fix is being worked on right now, but it is not in place yet and that means that you're going to have to wait until the end of the month for the cooling system to actually start to kick in at dupont circle and faraget north. the cooling system takes cool water and then air is blown over the pipes and it sends the cool air into the station. the pipes that carry the water have been leaking for years and metro has simply shut off the cooling system to dupont circle and ff araget north which of course are very busy stations along the red line. you should be prepared today if you're going here. it's hotter inside the station than it is out here. be aware if you're riding the red line today. back to you. >> adam tuss, thank you. 5:47. it could be a day of high stakes for attorney general jeff sessions. >> he's likely to face a grilling by members

when he testifies today. news 4's edward lawrence joins us live from capitol hill. edwa edward, what do lawmakers want to hear? >> reporter: at least democratic lawmakers want to know why he left off of his security paperwork meetings with the russian ambassador. they want to know sort of fill in the blanks from testimony from former fbi director james comey. the president cleared the room. he left james comey in the room. comey says that's the meeting where the president said, can't you just let this go? talking about the flynn russia investigation. >> edward, there are rumors that the president is considering firing the special counsel in the russia investigation. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: one of his friends told cbs the president is considering firing robert
