washington app. right now, voting is under way in virginia's primary election. the spotlight is on the top of the ticket and the governor's race. on the democratic side, tom perriello and ralph northam and also ed gillespie and corey stewart and frank wagner. justin finch has more. >> reporter: lots of questions about the turnout, will it be high or low. it is a primary so it can be tough to call. however, we're now a step closer to 2018 and potential changes at the top of state government and a potential shift in the electorate. none of that has been lost on voters that we met today in alexandria as well as fairfax county. as you go out to vote, tips to keep in mind. remember, polls are closing at 7:

if you're in line by 7:00, you'll get a chance to vote. you will need a valid photo i.d. that can be your virginia driver's license or i.d. or passport. if you don't have an i.d. at your polling place or have to use a provisional ballot which won't be counted until you present your ballot i.d., you have until friday to do that. another option is a voter i.d. which you can get at the registration office, too. people say they can feel the eyes of the nation watching their primary. >> i mean, i was doing a little bit of reading about it and they say that they feel like what happened today, that this is really going to give an indication of how things will go in 2018. so i think that's a lot of where the attention so going. >> i think virginia in a lot of ways represents the divide that america faces. you have a lot of federal government presence in the northern virginia area and the rest of the virginia area actually looks like the central st

a university of virginia student was just freed from prison in north korea. he was detained for stealing a propaganda banner and then sentenced to 15 years behind bars. there are some questions about his health. his parents told "the washington post" he has been in a coma for several months. now, this news comes after a former basketball star arrived in north korea. >> dennis rodham just landed this morning. kelly cie

>> that's not my focus right now. >> no mention of rodman in a statement from the state department. he's due back in the u.s. by this evening. the state department is working to secure the release of three other americans held in north korea. kelly cobiella, nbc news, london. developing this morning, we are working to learn what led up to a deadly shooting in the district. d.c. police say someone shot and killed a man on parkland place in southeast last night. they didn't give us the man's name. police said they have not arrested anyone so far. neighbors called her the best mom and this morning those neighbors in vienna are holding a fund-raiser for sabine na titus who was killed in a murder-suicide. ralph titus strapped his ex-wife at her home on sunday and then shot himself a few blocks away in his own backyard. the estranged couple had 8-year-old twin daughters.

we are looking to learn more about what led to a shooting at a northern virginia hotel. yesterday, a woman walked into the lobby of a quality inn covered in blood in the woodbridge area. she told police a man in her room shot her. after two hours of trying to talk to that man, police forced their way into the room and found that he was also suffering from a gunshot wound but was alive. it looks like the man may have shot himself. both victims checked into that hotel together and were traveling from new york. it looks like crooks are using official phone numbers to steal from unsuspecting victims. according to our news partners, u.s. capitol police numbers are being used in a spoofing scam. that's when you get a call from a number that is not what appears to be. the crooks made callers believe they needed to settle a fictitious warrant. end the call immediately, police say, if you're asked to provide information that is personal over
