through the dirt into the outfield. >> it's sinister and like shooting fish in a barrel. >> now who is the gunman and why did he do it? and how does it change the security in the nation's capitol? >> i believe having to dodge bullets today -- >> special coverage on news4 starts now. it's been nine hours now since the community baseball field became a crime scene sending shockwaves from alexandria to capitol hill and across the country. good afternoon i'm doreen gentzler. >> and i'm leon harris. so much information to get to and a better idea of what led to all of this. we begin with jim handly. jim, walk us through the latest information. >> reporter: i want to start with a quote from a witness in the moments after the gunfire stopped, that witness from this very field said, we have

versus guns, not good odds. we are helpless. it is hard to imagine that any one would target members of congress, playing for a charity baseball event, practicing up for tomorrow night, a game which will still take place. hard to imagine that someone would target them, a nonpartisan event that dates back more than 100 years but that's what happened in this quiet, close knit community in delray here. shortly after 7:00 this morning that's when it all started. that's when police tell us a gunman walked up here to eugene simp sin stadium park. he raised his rifle and started firing. we're spread out across the field and in the dugout alla cross t -- across time. he's from illinois and witnesses and police say when he started shooting

him. among those hits, steven scalise, so was matt mika, a lobbyists for tyson's food and zack bart as well as capital agent crystal greiner. none of the other congressmen were hit. one did sustain minor injuries in an effort to get away. everybody was scrambling. most were scrambling to get behind that first base dugout. this whole thing had them scrambling to survive, some to the parking lot to get behind cars. let's hear what some of them had to say later on in the morning. >> the shots being fired and there are people running, possibly victims involved. >> we were upbeat getting ready for a game and something like this happens and you can't believe it. fortunately there's security detail there or we all would have been vulnerable

fire -- return fire. i'm sure they saved who knows how many lives but pray for those that did get hit today. >> gun shot went off, it was louder than a normal gun shot. and then people started reacting and running toward the dugout. more gunshots went off. steve scalise was shot in the right field through second and first in the grass just off the infield. we had a staffer down, matt mika was shot and one of roger williams' staffer was shot. >> reporter: we want to give you a big picture view above this ball field. let's take a look at our mass camera right now. third base the gunman approaches from behind the dugout. it's actually behind the big metal container he fired through the fence. congressman steve scalise hit in the hip, crawls to the outfield, other witnesses run for that first base dugout and to hide behind

vehicle is still in that park's parking lot. the suspect about three minutes before the gunfire erupted asked a florida congressman, who was playing on this field, were they democrats or republicans? again three minutes after that, the gunfire began as many as 50 bullets perhaps more according to one senator. with more on how this all unfolded from the very beginning, we have team coverage for you. our pat collins spent the day looking into the suspect's past and his history. shomari stone learning more about the two officers who saved the day, hurt in the line of duty, rushed to the hospital, but we begin with our bureau chief, julie kerry who is live in alexandria. >> reporter: it's hard to see right now but there is still a very active investigation underway, the y, the ball field just down the street. the fbi command vehicles rolled into place and they have been scouring this

at the center of that scene and of course the biggest question on everyone's minds tonight, what was his motive, but the witnesses and neighbors i talked to today they've already come to their own conclusions about that. it was a barrage of gunfire aimed as members of congress at their morning baseball practice. some bullets flying into the neighboring ymca. this woman lives next door to the field. >> it was boom, boom, boom for the first ten or so and it was a pause and they started up again rapid fire. >> reporter: return fire came right away from the capitol police officers on duty at the field to provide security for the congressman. alexandria police on the scene in just minutes. they also offer fired on the gunman, james hodgkinson. >> the officers received fire from a suspect and they returned fire and that part of the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: this man was working out inside the y.

wooden structure, exchanging fire with what i believed to be police officers who were hiding behind a black suv. >> reporter: witnesses and neighbors all reaching the same conclusion, this was a targeted attack. south carolina congressman jeff dunkin' had been practicing at the field earlier and was gone by the time gunfire erupted. >> based on the question he asked me i would make that assumption if he asked me if this team was the republican or democrat team practicing. i responded it was republican team practicing and he proceeded to shoot republicans. take that for what it's worth. >> reporter: my colleague tracee wilkins has been out in this neighborhood and just done an interview with a trainer who was working out at the ymca. he was out in the parking lot when this unfolded and we will hear from him a little bit later on this evening. also we just been told at 5:00, the fbi and otherge

>> reporter: again those first bullets fired from behind third base from an m 4 then a gun battle ensued with the officers who were on the field, three minutes later alexia police officers again quickly arriving on the field too assist. from the shooting to the shooter, we're learning more about the gunman from il, a 66-year-old man who apparently spent some time in this area in the weeks leading up to this morning. let's go to our pat collins who is on the other side of the park where the suspect's vehicle remains in a parking lot. pat, what have you learned? >> reporter: jim, i'm in the backyard of a friend's home on the edge of the crime scene. i want you to look up now and to the left and you can see the ymca. you can see there are evidence markers all along the side of the building. we counted at least 22. look over to your right now and you'll see an

the armored car is parked ascrew in the parking lot. behind that car we believe is the suspect's vehicle. we expect that police and the feds will inspect that vehicle and process that vehicle and try to gain some clues from that vehicle. here in the front, you can see those gigantic trucks command post trucks, the feds have brought in. the fbi is here. the atf is here. alexandria police here. virginia state police here. they plan to be here a long time. now as for the suspect himself, well, he didn't arrive here just last night. it appears he's been here in alexandria for some time. james hodgkinson, 66 years old, from bellville, illinois, shot and killed by police after he

ambushed congressmen practicing baseball on the del ray field. it appeared hodgkinson has been in alexandria since april, former mayor bill yule remembers seeing him at the y on a regular basis. >> when i got word and saw the picture and i said, oh, my god, it's unbelievable. you sit there and talk to someone. he's very rational. seemed rational. >> reporter: recognize that man? >> yes, he's come in here before. >> reporter: that's jamie craig, he's a bar manager. she remembers hodgkinson as a frequent customer there. >> definitely creeped female bartenders out mostly. >> reporter: he would come in and order one thing. >> a budweiser. >> reporter: drink the beer, stare out the window. >> right. >> reporter: on facebook, hodgkinson had some strong and

thoughts. i want to say mr. president, you're an expletive, you're the biggest expletive we've ever had in the oval office. back in the illinois, hodgkinson ran a home inspection business. police say they were concerned about the way he was shooting his gun outside. >> even though it is legal to shoot on his property, we don't want anybody getting hurt. so we went over there and talked to him, explained to him, hey, the rifle you're shooting could ricochet off something. >> reporter: investigative effort going on. by the time this is over, they're going to know everything about james hodgkinson. favorite color, what he eats for breakfast and perhaps what him do what he did

>> reporter: all right. pat collins with more on the gunman. thank you. we should also tell you a witness spoke with us this morning and said while he was firing, he said absolutely nothing and the gunfire went on for minutes, some say as many as seven to ten minutes. some have said as many as 50 bullets. throughout the evening we're going to be hearing from many more members of congress. we'll hear from virginia's governor calling those police officers, those kprol police officers heros. had they not been here protecting the majority whip, the carnage we might have seen. back to you. >> nobody wants to even think about that. >> thank you, jim. >> we're learning more about how the victims of the shootings are doing. a family friend of congressional aid zachary bart says he's out of the hospital after being shot in the calf and matt mika is a lobbyist for tyson food.

welcome back. we want to catch you up on today's ambush as a baseball field in alexandria. >> four people are recovering from gun shot wounds including republican congressman from louisiana steve scalise. the shooter was killed by the police. >> the man attacked this morning as republicans were practicing for tomorrow's charity baseball game against the democrats. >> there were dozens if not hundreds of shots fired. there was -- it was scary. >> democratic congressman tweeted out this photo of a

this happened at this morning's baseball team when they heard about the shooting at the republicans practice. >> quite a few members of congress say the brave actions of two capitol police officers stopped this from turning into a massacre on that baseball field. there were more than 20 members of congress on the field when it happened. the two officers took on the gunman and helped save a lot of lives. shomari stone is at capitol police headquarters with a look at what we know about those two officers. >> reporter: right now those two officers are being called heros. the capitol police officers right now are in good condition. house speaker paul ryan along with president trump praised them for their heroism. they saved many lives. u.s. capitol police officers david bailey and crystal grinder were hurt in the shooting at the republican congressional baseball practice. now they were a security detail for

rand paul said they had not been there, it would have been a massacre. bailey has been a capitol police officer for over nine years. he received a minor injury during the shooting. he was treated and released. crystal grinder is also in good condition. the gunman shot her in the ankle. doctors are still treating her for her yir. both officers are responsible for protecting members of congress. they released a written statement commending the officers for their response. the department thanked the alexandria police department, the fbi, the u.s. park police and other law enforcement agencies. now many people are on twitter praising these officers and the capitol police board released information just basically stating that they are heros. shomari stone, news4. >> thank you. our team coverage continues now as we go inside the del ray neighborhood. it's a pretty tight knit community. >> it doesn't have a

violence to report. tracee wilkins, what are you hearing? how's the community reacting now? >> reporter: i would say the best way to describe this community is that while we have a lot of post and pre-world war ii homes closely located, side by side and well man cured yards, folks who still meet each other for could have fill and hang out together neighbors know one another and so when these shots rang out i had people who were telling me we could not believe that those were gunshots. we thought it had to be construction or some work happening since this can be such a loud community with construction always happening here. but that was not the case. indeed it was a massacre, one that people who lived here were not at all prepared to have happen in their own backyards. here at the ymca they are still working on collecting evidence here in the parking lot. fbi agents, alexandria police have been here all day long. we talked with one resident who said that he believes this community has what it takes to make it past this

. and we're back live at the skeeb of today's congressional baseball shooting. remembering that just a month ago the told you about a push to provide increased security offcampus for members of congress. well, it was the sergeant of arms, the house sergeant at arms requesting at least $2 million to beef up security at members' office in their home districts. the security upgrades include panic buttons and video surveillance equipment. congress members asked for these upgrades themselves amid concerns of gun threats. fast-forward a few weeks later and this evening we have a congressman and four others recovering from gun shot wounds. much more in just minutes from del ray in alexandria. >> all right. thank you, jim. our scott macfarlane has been reporting on the subject of security for members of congress for months now. read one of his most recent in

91 down to the south in warrenton. another hazy hot and humid day and we have a few clouds out there. temperatures 87 degrees. that heat index 94 degrees. it's a hot one. not seeing much in the way of storms. most of us are draw with the exception of fauquier county just to the south. here's a little shower north of hartward here in southern fauquier county. most of us will stay on the dry side tonight. most of the activity because of that easterly flow, that northeasterly flow most of the activity is south to us. big storm out here toward chicago but our weather coming down from the north. we're not going to be seeing all that much tomorrow. isolated shower most likely to the west of i-95. 80 degrees at noon, 85 degrees at 4:00. humidity also down. tomorrow a fairly comfortable day on our thursday. by 8:00 mostly dry

85 tomorrow but 84 degrees on friday. 87 on saturday. that's when we start to see the humidity back on the increase, sunday going for a high of 93, hot and humid on sunday. best chance it looks like it'll be on friday. another chance on monday with a high of 89 and all next week we stay in the 80s, no heat wave here. actually some pretty nice weather for the month of june. looking pretty good as we head towards fathers day. the hottest day, you know, because it's father's day. >> of course. >> thank you, doug. >> just our luck. get in the pool. >> there you go. they could've used some pool action. big scene played out overnight, stunning scene, an inferno caught on tape. the serious questions about just how long the residents living there had been in danger.

congressional republicans at a northern virginia baseball field this morning. >> four people are recovering now from gun shot wounds including house majority whip steve scalise. he's out of surgery but still in critical condition. the. >> the gunman was a guy from illinois. police shot and killed him during the ambush. >> our team of reporters is covering every aspect of this story for you and we'll bring you the latest throughout the evening. >> new details in that deadly shooting at a ups warehouse in san francisco. three people are dead there. the gunman, jimmy lamb was an employee there. he was holding an assault pistol when police found it and turned it on himself. lamb has a history of mental illness. and in london, many people still unaccounted for and the death toll there could rise after a huge fire raced through a high rise apartment overnight. at least a dozen people have been killed. >> scarey scene. the building just went through some major renovations but it's going to be a while before anyone knows the cause
