way with temperatures reaching 120 degrees. a crash captured on dash cam. that and more on a special edition of "early today". good to be with you on this thursday morning. i'm frances rivera. house majority whip steve scalise is in critical condition this morning after a gunman opened fire on a republican baseball team. according to the d.c. hospital where he's being treated the bullet fractured bones, injured internal organs and caused severe bleeding. scalise has already received multiple pients of blood and doctors say he'll need further surgeries. several others were also injured during the shooting. matt mika a lobbyist for tyson foods was in critical condition. congressional aid zachary barth was also shot but posted a facebook and said he's okay and recovering in the hospital. his boss representative roger williams from texas suffered a sprained

crystal griner, matt mika, zachary barth and representative williams who twisted an ankle. >> two of the capitol police were shot. one staffer who dove into the dug out with a leg wound. we got a belt and stopped the bleeding. we were tending to him as well as try to keep down away from the shooter. >> reporter: members of congress said the gunman knew who was on the field. >> individual walked up and said hey are those republicans or democrats. jeff said republicans. the guy turned around and started walking towards the field. it was a little odd. i didn't see any indication of violence or anything. >> a white guy 5'8", 5'10". >> reporter: after an intense gunfight that shot out the windows of the next door ymca hodgkinson was shot and wounded and died a few hours later at the hospital. all
