fighter. this barely 24 hours after the baseball field scalise was on turned into a war zone. scalise, the house's third ranking republican shot in the hip. >> we can't help him. we have bats versus rifle. >> reporter: the gun fire early wednesday reportedly lasting for 10 harrowing minutes aimed at republicans practicing for a charity baseball game. the gunman, 66-year-old james t. hodgkinson reportedly started firing from behind a fence behind the third baseline moving toward home plate and back toward the dugout unable to fina a way on to the field. the texas jonkman j joe barton, there with his children. >> i was behind the dugout. my son jack got under an suv. he was very brave. my other son brad was in the batting cage and was also very brave. >> along with

other victims. zachary barth, matt mika, and crystal griner. crystal griner among those who returned fire at the gunman wounding him. james t. hodgkinson is from belleville, illinois. he came to virginia in march and had been living out of his van. while authorities won't comment on his motive, he asked if players on the field were republicans. >> he asked me if it was the republican or democrat team practicing. i responded the republicans. he proceeded to shoot republicans. >> reporter: on james t. hodgkinson's social media account, anti-trump and anti-are the posts. the president calling for unity. >> we may have our differences, but we do well in times like these two remember that everyone who serves in our nation's

capitol is here because, above all, they love our country. >> reporter: congressional leaders echoing the sentiments on the house floor. >> we're united in our anguish. an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. >> reporter: meanwhile that congressional baseball game will go on as planned tonight. just over the potomac here at national stadium in washington d.c. president trump aparentally wanted to attend. secret service telling him because of the late hour, they would not be able to make the necessary security precautions to get him there. meanwhile, it was revealed yesterday that the government had volunteered for the bernie sanders campaign. senator sanders denounced violence on the senate floor. >> craig melvin, thank you. we're learning more

being credited with stopping that attack from becoming a massacre. that in the words of one of the elected officials who was there. tom costello is at med star washington medical center this morning. tom, good morning to you. >> good morning. quick upstate on representative scalise. he's in critical condition. we're told the bullet traveled across his pelvis causing fractured bones, internal bleeding, internal injuries. he received several unites of blood. underwent emergency surgery and more surgery is planned. meanwhile, crystal griner is here who was credited along with her partner with saving many lives yesterday morning. after an all out gun battle in the park -- >> shots being fired and there are people running possibly victims involved. >> rt

u.s. capitol police officers, crystal griner and david bailey are being hailed as heros for immediately returning fire and saving the lives of members of congress, family members, and many others. >> if they would not have been there, this would have been a massacre of innocent people in a park where innocent civilians walk their dogs. we have kids at practices. >> officers greiner and bailey prevented that. my family will be forever grateful. the thin blue line held today. >> reporter: the officers were only there because the gop whip has a security detail. most rank and file members of congress don't. >> the capitol police were firing from behind the fist base dugout. i kept yelling back, are you friendly? are you friendly? we didn't know if te was another gunman or this was return fire. >> reporter: within three minutes they had backup from

alexandria police but officer crystal griner was down, shot in the ankle. officer bailey suffered a minor ankle injury. one of the most seriously injured, matt mika, was shot in the chest. zachary barth, a staffer, shot in the leg, was treated and released. on the house floor, speaker paul ryan. >> it is clear to me based on various eyewitness accounts that without these two heros, agent bailey and agent griner, many lives would have been lost. >> reporter: arizona senator jeff flake tweeted out he went to the hospital and met with the officers and thanked them for saving his life. really, a sentiment echoed across the political spectrum. in addition, a lot of thanks as well to the officers from alexandria who responded immediately also engaged the suspect, pinning him down, and that gun battle going on for about 10 minutes.

>> tom, thank you. congressman roger williams injured his ankle during the attack and his congressional aid, zachary barth was shot in the leg. good morning to both of you. it's good to see you. >> good morning. >> congressman, forgive me for addressing my first question to zach. how are you doing this morning? how do you feel, and what happened yesterday? >> i'm okay. i'm very blessed to be alive, and thank goodness for agents bailey and griner. as you all said, without them, there would have been tremendous loss of life, and i probably wouldn't be talking to you. >> you were shot. you were in the outfield. you managed to get yourself into that dugout. what happened once you got into the dugout? >> sure. so they started shooting at me. i was pinned down in right field, and at that point i got struck in the leg, and made a run for it. i was running for my

bleeding pretty badly, but i was really just trying to keep my head down, keep everybody's heads down and prevent anything else from happening. we didn't know who was going on. there was a lot of uncertainty and we were trying to stay alive. >> zach, you more or less jumped right into the congressman's arms, right? what happened from your perspective, congressman williams? >> i was hitting ground balls on the third base side to our third baseman, trent kelly, not knowing the shooter was probably just 25 yards away from where i was. i went around and started hitting balls to steve scalise. i hit the first grounder to him, and all of a sudden we heard the pop. a lot of us thought it might be a car backfiring. then we heard more. people were yelling he's got a gun. get cover. i turned, and i ran into the dugout. i dove into the dugout. it's about six foot into the ground.

first on a concrete slab, but i did it. when i got there, i was immediately with congressman flake and mo brooks, and all of a sudden here comes zach. he jumped in there and here we were arm to arm. mo brooks took his belt off and we helped put a tourniquet on zach's leg to help his bleeding. then we stayed down. we had generations in this dugout. we had everybody from my age to late 60s to a ten-year-old, joe barton's son was in the dugout with us, and people were protecting him. we bonded that day, but it was a scary thing. i just want to say quick the thin blue line worked. these two officers were fabulous. they saved all our lives. there's no question it would have been different if they hadn't been there. we owe it to them. >> if you think about what

not been opposed by those two officers during the first three minutes before the alexandria got there, another thing that struck me, i don't know if you saw that animation we had. this gunman started on the third base side. went up and down the line, around toward home plate and back up because he couldn't find a way oh get on the field. had you stopped to think about what had happened had he made his way on to the field. >> it would have been a lot different. he was trying to get through a gate and the gate was locked. he had nowhere to go. if he'd have gotten on the field, we would have had nowhere to go. we had baseballs and bats to defend ourselves. the lord worked his -- the lord worked yesterday. he saved us, and we're grateful for that, but also grateful, again, for these capitol police that saved all of us. >> zach, i always wonder what it must have been like to lay down your head on your pillow like a day

mind? can you share how you're feeling and how you're thinking act what transpired? >> i'm receiving plenty of prayers and thoughts. the people around me, we have a great community. i'm from houston, texas. plenty of people back home have reached out to me. the people around here on both sides of the aisle, we have a great community up here on capitol hill. everybody is just lifting me up. i couldn't be more blessed. >> it's going to be one of the most watched congressional softball games in history. >> it's not softball. >> baseball, excuse me. with good reason, and i know your thoughts and prayers go to everybody who has been impacted by this tragedy. >> certainly has. we hope people come to the game tonight. i would home that nats stadium could be full. it goes to charity. it's the right time to play the game. speaker ryan and i and joe barton and

"the washington post" is reporting mueller's team is actively investigating the possibility that president trump obstructed justice. peter aleck zander joins us from the white house. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. this could be a significant turning point in this investigation. the president, the subject of a criminal investigation into possible obstruction of justice. just moments ago president trump tweeted writing they made up a phony collusion with the russian story, found zero proof, so now obstruction of justice on the phony story. nice. as president trump was wrapping up his 71

unwanted gift from special counsel robert mueller. mueller is expanding the russia inqui inquiry, now examining whether the president attempted to obstruct justice. investigators are working to interview three top intelligence officials including dan coats and the head of the national security agency. it's a dramatic development in an investigation that's been looming over the trump administration since day one. the post reporting the obstruction of justice investigation began days after mr. president trump abruptly fired james comey on may 9th. the move appeared to confirm with comey told senators last week when asked when the president requested to back off michael flynn amounted to obstruction. >> that's a conclusion the special council will work toward. >> reporter: comey acknowledged the prest

not try to stop the russia probe. a spokesman for the president's personal lawyer, not denying the washington post report but saying the fbi leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal. mueller meeting privately for the first time with the leaders of the senate intelligence committee. the chairman of that committee, senator richard burr calling their meeting constructive. the latest headline coming less than 24 hours after the president's aides tried to knock down speculation he might try to fire mueller. a spokesperson saying while the president has every right to fire him, he has no intention to do so. >> reporter: new this morning, "the wall street journal" reports the former deputy of the national security agency wrote a memo documenting a phone call his boss had with the president. president trump cast doubt on the intelligence community's conclusion that russia interfered with the election and tried to persuade admiralo

to say there was no evidence of collusion between his campaign and russian officials. matt a savannah. >> peter, thank you. let's bring in ari. good morning. let's play this out. two of the key intelligence officials, mr. coats and mr. rogers have already said they didn't feel -- they said it under oath -- they were not pressured to end any kind of investigation. is this obstruction investigation now going to boil down to the word of james comey versus the word of the president? >> probably not. because the doj doesn't care about their feelings and the way they put it in that now famous testimony. they care about the feelings and intent to the president. this is the largest development legally in the president trump era. it is a sign the inquiry is not just about the campaign and the past. it's a criminal inquiry about the president's present conduct in office. >> how is it likely to proceed? in a normal investigation, one might try to get the testimony

could mueller get the testimony of president trump under oath? could the president say i don't want to testify because of the fifth amendment? >> reporter: it's possible. we've seen prosecutors or independent prosecutors seek testimony of white house aides and senior official and get it. grand jury testimony tends to be something that's hard to resist. but when clinton was faced with this, they agreed voluntarily to do grand jury testimony under oath. whether a president would not agree and be forced is a legal question that has never been answered. >> all right. thank you. another big story we've been covering this morning, the terrible inferno in london. the death toll has risen overnight. it's expected to go even higher. at least 17 people lost their lives that consumed a high-rise apartment building and still people remain missing. authorities are calling this the worst fire in a generation for the city. bill neely is there for us this morning. bill,

>> reporter: good morning. this building is still on fire. the death toll still rising. dozens still missing. most of them lived on the top floors of this building. among them, whole families of five, six, and seven people. it's another terrible blow for a country that recently has been hit hard. high up in the smoking tower block, their recovering bodies. down below, the shock is still sinking in. >> their mom, dad, their loved ones. it couldn't do anything. >> reporter: relatives wait helpless. >> i don't think they are alive. >> reporter: you don't think so? fire swept the tower in minutes as people slept. at least 600 inside. they signalled with flashlights, tied sheets to escape. firefighters battling to save

them. ace stressing scenes inside, a woman filmed her attempt to escape. she and her children are still missing. like five of this man's family. >> whole family went up, complete. >> reporter: there's grief and anger. the building recently covered in plastic cladding. no sprinkler was required, but there was no central fire alarm. >> a couple of people described this to me as a death trap. is that going too far in. >> it obviously was a death trap. >> reporter: and a death toll police say will rise by dozens. so real anger here. the singer adele has come to this area. she visited last night. she's from london. she met resident just one of the millions here really shocked by this tragedy. >> all right. bill neely in london for us. thank you. let us get a check on the weather. al is on the road today in florida this morning. al,d

latest starting with pete williams. pete, good morning to you. >> reporter: investigators say they're discovering more about the hour about this illinois man who was accused of being the gunman and who was killed at the scene. except the answer to one of the big questions. why did he do it? for nearly three months investigators say james t. hodgkinson lived in this van parked near the ball field he attacked early morning. residents say he often showered at this nearby ymca. >> i'd see him in the locker room. >> reporter: neighbors say he sometimes slept in the park where the congressional team practiced. >> i seen him in the neighborhood, walking around the neighborhood, and sleeping on a bench in the park. >> reporter: others who came in contact with him say he didn't seem dangerous, though, some say he was odd. >> he's always been a little strange s

jobs open. he started working in the hub in memphis like you see on tv, late nights, moving packages. and he moved up from working in meteorology to being a manager before he retired. there was an opportunity to work for a local memphis station doing the morning weather cut-ins. it was so neat to wake up and see my dad on tv giving the weather for all of memphis. my dad and my step mom got married september 1st, 2001,. i can honestly say that when he met her, his entire life changed. i've never seen two people that while they met later in life, it's as if they've known each other since they were kids. we have five kids, and 11 total grand kids from six to 21. he absolutely loves all of his grand kids, and would do anything in the world for them. everywhere he's
