grind. >> chris lawrence is at the game tonight, scott mcfarland is digging deeper into the changes in place in the wake of yesterday's violence. let's start with julie. >> reporter: most of the investigators have headed home for the day. there are a few officers still protecting the scene. we watched throughout the day as this big area inside the crime scene tape, it looked like they didn't miss any bit of this grass as they combed for evidence, making sure they don't miss anything that might reveal exactly what happened. >> reporter: what investigators found in this white fan may provide the best clues yet about why james hodgkinson opened fire on a congressional baseball practice. already investigators have seen evidence that hodgkinson was angry with president trump and republicans. he had been living in the van since he came from illinois to alexandria back in march. inside investigators found his cell phone, computer and a camera. now processing them all. they say he was armed with two

he came here to the y to shower. now those windows shattered by bullet holes. he arrived here at 5:30 in the morning, and just after 7:00 this y member saw him outside walking around with a gun shooting at the ball field. >> i couldn't believe what i was seeing until he shot. at that point i knew something was happening. i ran inside, i opened those doors as fast as i could to get inside and told bill at the desk to -- i said there's one outside with a gun call the police. >> reporter: amber said she watched from inside as the barrage continued. capitol police protection officers guarding the congressmen returned fire. alexandria police arrived soonafter and then the

>> maybe three, four minutes after we called the police is when it looked like he was starting to take some hits himself. he went down to his knees. then when he moved away from the building you could see really he was starting to get hit. >> reporter: alexandria residents, too, continue to recall encounters they had with the gunman. tonight we're hearing for the first time from his wife, sue hodgkinson back in illinois. she said her husband began selling off his belongings for money before he came here to alexandria. she learned about the shooting yesterday from a reporter. >> i was shocked. and i heard it through an abc reporter on the phone. i don't know what to tell you. i had no idea this was going to happen. i don't know what to say about it. i can't believe he did this. i can't believe it. i just want y'all to go away and leave my

ticket sales skyrocketing. >> leon, it's unprecedented. i was just speaking with a representative from the nats who is preaching patience, saying they have never seen a response like this. they opened up extra seats to get more people in here. they'll go well over 20,000 people here this evening. so they're saying their resources are stretched thin. they're trying to get people, as many people as possible to come in and enjoy the game. look behind me. you can see some of the players just playing catch. we saw some out here practicing a bit earlier. we heard a lot of words thrown around in the last 24 hours, brotherhood, family, unity. almost nothing symbolizes that more than a representative from louisiana named cedric richmond, a democrat from a neighboring district to representative steve scalise. they talk a lot of smack. there is a healthy competition between them when it

this game. representative richmond earlier came from his hospital room visiting with his colleagues and he talked about what this game is going to mean without steve scalise here. >> i will tell you we'll miss steve on the field. but steve has a long fight ahead of him. the good thing is i know steve, i know he is a fighter. and whether that fight is for the next two weeks, two months two years, we know that he will fight all the way to the end. >> to give you a sense of that sense of unity, we've seen a lot of people with the lsu ball caps on in solidarity with representative scalise. we've seen people with red and blue pennants to wave both showing there are no democrats or republicans here tonight. we're altogether at least for one night. when you

>> reporter: as you know well for months president trump has made it known that he is not personally under investigation, but now it appears that could be changing. >> reporter: in a major development in the russia investigation, news that it is now expanding to include questions about president trump himself and possible obstruction of justice. >> mr. president, do you believe you are under investigation. >> reporter: no answer from the president when questioned by reporters. earlier on twitter he called the development the single greatest witch hunt in american political history. they made up a phony collusion with the russian story, found zero proof. now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. nice. nbc news confirmed that robert mueller will interview nsa chief mike rogers and national intelligence director dan coates who testified behind closed doors today on capitol hill.

what is different about this? this is a huge development because the investigation is no longer exclusively focused on a presidential campaign and concerns about collusion. now the investigation is looking at the sitting president of the united states. >> the president's legal team slammed the leak of the story as outrageous and illegal. with yesterday's shooting and promises of unity echoing across washington, still questions today from both parties about letting mueller's investigation run its course. >> it's not a witch hunt. he has a job to do. >> reporter: an investigation with questions now reaching into the oval office. and tonight a bit of breaking news. vice president mike pence has now hired his own personal attorney to handle questions into the russia investigation. richard cullen signed on to his legal team. he's a former u.s. attorn,

virginia. leon, this comes a few weeks after president trump hired his own personal attorney for the same matter. >> all right, blayne alexander, thank you very much for that. it's back to work for the jurors in the trial of bill cosby. today they told the judge they're deadlocked on all charges and cannot reach a verdict. he sent them back to the jury room to try to break the stalemate. cosby is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault against a woman who used to work at temple university. he says their encounter was consensual. jurors have been sequestered since june 5th. ast for what can happen next, te judge has discretion on how many times to send them back for deliberations. if they remain deadlocked on all three charges, he may declare a mistrial. then it's up to the prosecutor to decide whether to retry the case. as a jury in pennsylvania appears deadlocked, one of cosby's accusers was pleading with

scene in del ray. because we cannot forget that that baseball field remains an active crime scene. alexandria police say recovering all the evidence could take several days because three of the four victims are still in the hospital. today we learned the fbi recovered two weapons that belonged to the shooter. right now investigators are protesting a cell phone, computer and camera that they took out of hodgkinson's van. of course he was killed in a shoot o shootout with capitol hill police. we got a chance to walk around nats park about 20 minutes ago. seeing people holding up red and blue banners with lsu hats, solidarity with steve scalise. a lot of them talked about what it means to be here in light of what happened yesterday. >> i'm gla

brian molds broke the conditions of his release. he was released last month and one of the conditions was for him to stay out of d.c. now prosecutors say they have evidence that he was in d.c. earlier today to buy drugs. the motion also says he put a number of disturbing images on his facebook page referencing yesterday's shooting in alexandria. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you new information on our nbc washington app. tonight new video just in of a blimp that exploded near the u.s. open golf tournament. golf.com tweeting out video of the explosion. the advertising blimp went down in a field about a half mile from the golf course in wisconsin. an official with the company that operates the blimp says the pilot rode the blimp to the ground. that pilot suffered serious burns and was flown to the hospital. there's no word yet on what caused this blimp crash. a judge will soon decide if convicted beltway

that james comey last week. he was asked whether he believes the president was engaged in obstruction of justice when he tried to get him to back off the mike flynn investigation. comb ey said that will be up to robert mueller to decide. republicans and democrats responding to all of this. some republicans trying to discredit the probe by saying mueller has political influences here but many republicans backing the probe saying it is not a witch hunt and the probe has to have space to follow its course. late tonight we learned that the vice president has obtained a lawyer to represent him in the probe. it's worth noting the reality check here. even if robert mueller determines there was obstruction of justice, it's up to congress not the courts to act because a president cannot be indicted. he can only be impeached. back to you. >> kristen welker at the white house, thank you. reporting continues after this
