morning and a reminder, on the orange line we are open now after surge 15 but single tracking between cheverly and new carrollton. an emotional start to the baseball game last night throwing out the first pitch was officer david bailey. he was one of the two capitol police officers who returned fire at wednesday's practice saving the lives of nearly 2 dozen congressmen. you can see bailey hobbling onto the field in crutches. he put his weight on his left foot and was able to throw the ball. last night's charity fund raised money for the capitol police fund. this morning we are hearing from the wife of james hodgkinson. >> she is shedding a lot of light on to this intense investigation. justin finch spent a lot of time going through this interview. he's joining us with what he's

>> reporter: hey there, david. good morning. that's right. sue hodgkinson said she is very sorry about what happened here. she also offered some insight into what her estranged husband was doing in the alexandria area. he came here to effect change with tax policy and tax brackets. the investigation at simpson park is continuing. they're surveying the baseball field and where he opened fire and injured five people. he died when he was shot and killed by police. right next door to that park is his white van that was found soon after the shooting. it was believed he was living in that van since about march or so. inside investigators did find a mattress, a pillow, also papers, computer, phone, camera, a

that being considered evidence at this time. they also have his handgun and rifle which appear to have been legally purchased. he was in the ymca field where he was also known to some ymca members as a new member himself. we have learned he was there as a new member getting there at about 5:0. the gunfire erupting close to 7:00 on wednesday morning. months before his wife is telling us that she noticed a change in him. >> oh, he made preparations for leaving. >> what kind of preparations did he make? >> he sold almost everything he owned from his business. >> reporter: and meantime back here at simpson park, the park remains closed. the ymca will be closed as well. the park could be closed for some several days. back to you. >> justin

ray section of alexandria. thank you. we mentioned house majority whip steve scalise is still in critical condition and matt mika is on a ventilator communicating through written notes. a lot of developments coming in on this story. stay close to the ncbc washingtn app. a fight that broke out outside the turkish ambassador's -- i think we're having trouble with that video clip. try to get it to you. in that video clip you can see guards kicking and beating protesters. turkey's president erdogan was in town. this morning the man arrested last month for having guns at trump international hotel is back in police custody. so authorities say that brian moles was ordered to stay out of d.c., but he came back. police say this time it was to buy drugs.

concerning things on facebook including this photo of newspaper headlines about wednesday's shooting in alexandria. moles will stay in jail until his trial. 4,000 military families will soon prepare to send their loved ones into a war zone. the trump administration announcing it's sending almost 4,000 additional american forces to afghanistan. most of the troops will train and advise afghan forces. developing right now, police found somebody dead in the anacostia park. we're working to find out who that was and what happened. this happened near popular point. look for updates on our nbc washington app. a disturbing image discovered montgomery village. somebody hung a noose from a tree in herrins cove common area. this was hanging in a common area near the parking lot. montgomery county police are

recovering from serious burns but nobody else was hurt when this blimp crashed at the u.s. open yesterday. investigators say a catastrophic failure in the nfl caused the blimp to crash and burn. the jury in bill cosby's sexual assault trial is going back behind closed doors this morning. yesterday jurors said they were deadlocked and the judge told them, try to come up with a unanimous verdict in this case. does pi is cosby is accused of sexual assault. >> his case came to court after dozens of women accused him of sexual assault. now one of his accusers wants to protect victims of sex crimes here in d.c. charlotte fox testified before the d.c. council yesterday. they asked the council to extend the statute of limitations for sex crimes. they say it can take years for survivors of sexual assault to say anything if they ever come forward in the first place. i

>> reporter: they are meeting with volunteers who are survivors of the massive fire. london authorities have confirmed 17 deaths so far, but british media reports that death toll could exceed 100. it was wednesday night when that massive fire broke out at that apartment building high rise. it took some 250 firefighters to battle the blaze. now keep in mind hundreds of people were sleeping at the time of the fire so investigators fear likely more people could be trapped inside. right now it's still unclear as to what caused that fire. david? >> megan fitzgerald at the live desk. thanks, megan. in a rare show of unity republicans and democrats hut ld together. >> it was time to line up for the annual congressional baseball game. the game was a huge sense of unity that people hope will last. >> it's really wonderful. i'

now to a crisis surrounding the white house. the investigation into president trump's son-in-law and adviser jared kushner, it is heating up. special counsel robert mueller is investigating kushner's finances and business dealings. as part of the investigation into the russian meddling into the 2016 election. this according to a new washington post report. nbc news has not independently confirmed the story. at the same time, vice president mike pence has hired his own attorney to represent him in the investigation. a source close to pence tells nbc news he had been interviewing lawyers for weeks to handle the matter so he can focus on his duties as vice president. he touched lives across the district and around the country. this is how one d.c. council member describes jim graham. coming up, more on the late politician's life and accomplishments. and the u.s. open is underway. we're going to show you one of the best shots of the day and one that, well, this is creating some water issues at the competition. we'll talk about that,

wreckage everywhere after a car smashes into a telephone pole in northeast d.c. we're tracking the traffic impact this morning. i was shocked. >> that's james hodgkinson's wife. that's the man that opened fire on a congressional baseball practice. distraught woman is adding insights to her husband's past. and moving past the act of violence. the show of solidarity at nats park. for at least one night democrats and republicans huddled together to pray for this country. >> they also played for the victims of that shooting at the alexandria baseball field.

that's at nats park right there. house whip steve scalise would have been playing. scalise and several others were shot while practicing for that game on wednesday morning. he remains in critical condition but we're told has improved. there was the sense of unity that folks hope will last. >> i think it's a recognition of solidarity with not only steve scalise, but solidarity of members of congress and hopefully with the american people. >> by playing tonight you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy. >> so it is a game, after all. and the scoreboard showed that the republicans were beaten by the democrats, 11-2. and this morning we are hearing from the wife of suspected gop baseball shooter james hodgkinson. >> she's shedding a lot of light on to this intense vest. news 4's justin f

that interview. justin? >> reporter: erika, good morning. speaking thursday sue hodgkinson struggled for words. the ones she kept coming back to were i'm sorry. i'm shocked. she had no idea that her husband came here to do what police say he did. now she's asking for privacy. meantime, the investigation is continuing focusing largely here on simpson park and that baseball field where those shots were fired on wednesday morning. the supposed targets here, the gop baseball team that was out here practicing that day. of course, five were injured. hodgkinson himself was shot and killed in gunfire exchange. this all happened next door to the ymca where his white van has been found. it was believed he was living in that van since about march or so. inside a mattress was found as are other items considered evidence in the case. back in to you. >> justin finch, thank
