"news 4 at 11:00" starts now. first at 11:00, new details in the death of a teenage girl from northern virginia. i'm erika gonzales. tonight a young man faces murder charges and the girls' friends and family are reacting. spencer starts our coverage live from sterling. darcy spencer, what are you learning this evening on this developing story? >> reporter: well, it certainly has, erika. a lot has happened since we were last on the air at 6:00. the suspect they had taken into custody is now facing a murder charge. there are a lot of new details. we are on huntington square. if you look behind me you see right behind this tree line is a retention pond. that's where police found the remains. take a look

where the suspect lived. a short distance away. >> can you believe -- please take the camera inside, from inside. >> reporter: emotions ran hyatt the adams center mosque in sterling during a frantic search for a missing 17 year old girl named nabra. family who had been praying for her safe return leave absolutely devastated after learning police believe they had found her body. >> the father is very desperate, the mother as well, very desperate. >> reporter: this is the man charged with killing the teen. he's 22 year old darwin torres and he lives steps away from the pond where police believe he dumped the teen's body. nabra was walking with friends back to an all-night prayer session at her mosque early sunday morning when she was attacked. >> she's very beautiful. she is very sweet. she, a religious person.

grabbed something to eat at the mcdonald's a couple of miles away. when the teens were walking back along the road about 3:00 in the morning, police say there was an argument or confrontation between the group and torres, and that's when nabra was assaulted. police recovered a bat at the scene. >> we're looking into the details of exactly what happened, but for some reason the man got out of the vehicle and he assaulted one of the group. it turned out to be our missing teenage girl. >> reporter: the group apparently didn't realize that that nabra was missing until they got back to the adams center. that's when police were called and the search began. torres was taken into custody after driving back to the area of the attack. a family friend says he led police to the pond a couple of miles away. >> it is just scary because a lot of people -- in the month of ramadan, people come here to pray and like -- i heard she was just going out to get breakfast. >> reporter: now, an autopsy will be performed to positively identify those r

victim died. we learned that this teenager was a student at south lake high school in rest in. grief counsellors expected to be there tomorrow, erikadarcy spencer, just an awful story. let me ask you one of the questions tonight is how this young woman seems to have gotten separated from her friends when all of this started to happen. how did they get separated? did they -- did others leave from that area? i mean what happened there? >> reporter: erika, that's something i think a lot of people really want to know more about, including myself. i did ask police some follow-up questions regarding that and as you can imagine it was very chaotic in those moments when this man pulled over in his car. we mentioned that there was a bat involved. so i think these young people got scared and they all began to run, and they began to scatter, and it sounds like unfortunately they didn't realize until it was too late that this young lady

and once they realized that she was no longer there with the group, they were trying to figure out where she went, and that's when police were called. of course, a missing persons report was filed and that's when police began to search for her as well. that search went on for many, many hours. >> darcy spencer staying on top of this story for us live in sterling. thank you, darci. right now the motive for the attack is unclear. we know the teenager was with friends, as you heard darcy mention, at some kind of overnight stay at a nearby mosque. reporters asked police if the victim's religion may have played a role in the assault. >> at this point there doesn't seem to be any indication. it seems they got in a dispute over something, nothing of that nature. >> count on news 4 to cover all angles of this investigation for you. look for any updates tomorrow morning on news 4 today and always through our nbc washington app. we have breaking news

a car plowed into a group of pedestrians outside a mosque as worshippers were leaving early morning prayers today during the holy month of ramadan. london police say there are a number of casualties and they have arrested one person. it is unclear if the act was deliberate. earlier this month muslim extremists drove a van into a crowd on a london bridge and then attacked people, killing eight. the nypd is sending extra officers to patrol mosques in new york city as a precaution. developing overseas. the u.s. responded to an attack on american-backed troops in syria by shooting down a syrian government jet this morning. officials say it is the first time the american military has taken down a syrian aircraft since the start of the civil war in 2011. this is file video we are showing you of the war. today's bombing is the latest escalation between coalition and pro-assad forces. the u.s. navy

of seven sailors who died when a destroyer collided with a container ship. the youngest of the victims was from virginia just outside shar lotsville, another lived in baltimore county. as nbc janis mackey frayer shows us from japan, the crew struggled to keep the ship from sinking. >> reporter: the frantic search for seven missing sailors is now over after divers found their bodies in the flooded sleeping cabins of the destroyer. >> as to how much warning they had, i don't know. that's going to be found out during the investigation. >> reporter: where the cargo ship struck the uss fitzgerald in the middle of the night, a huge gash. as water flooded in the crew scrambled to keep the ship from sinking. it took 16 hours to tow the uss fitzgerald back to port here. it was only then that divers were able to access the damaged section to make share discovery. the search now for answers. how could an

ship collide with a cargo ship more than three times its size? the weather was clear. the acx crystal on a normal run to tokyo. also in question, the time the collision happened. u.s. officials have said the fitzgerald was struck at 2:20 a.m., but late today an official with japan's coast guard told nbc news it was closer to 1:30 a.m. marine traffic record shows the crystal made a u-turn at 2:05, something investigators will look at. japanese investigators say they will talk to both crews to determine if there was negligence. the container ship, leased by a japanese firm, suffered dents and scrapes but none of the 20 filipino crew members were injured. several investigations are under way, but the navy says the focus right now is on the families of the sailors who were missing and are now gone. >> we owe it to our families

the navy to understand what happened. >> reporter: janis mackey frayer, nbc news, japan. and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> and as i mentioned at the top of the show, tomorrow is going to be a storm team 4 weather alert day. we will have heavy rain and strong to even severe thunderstorms moving through our area later in the day. take a look at what i'm tracking on storm team 4 radar. we are dry overnight tonight and dry tomorrow morning, but you can see this area of rain in ohio down through parts of kentucky and tennessee will be moving through the area, over during the afternoon and evening hours. now, as far as severe weather goes i want to show you the threats. take a look between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m., the biggest concern will be heavy rainfall that could lead to isolated flash flooding. how it collects on the roads and those known locations in your neighborhood on your commute home, that could certainly be a problem tomorrow. following that we will see potentially high, gust rhee, damaging winds out there and potential for some hail coming

coming up, i will show you future weather, the latest timing as the storms move through our area from west to east, when you can anticipate them in your neighborhood, erika. >> a busy start to the workweek. we will check in with you then. let's go to breaking news in west africa, a gunman storming a luxury resort in mali. it is a resort popular with western tourists. local officials are saying two were killed in today's attack. they are calling the attackers terrorists and say one injured gunman managed to escape. authorities say he left behind a machine gun and bottles containing explosive material. we move to montgomery county now where three people are under arrest for the murders of two high school students, but police say this investigation is far from over. shadi najjar and ziberov were shot inside their car outside montgomery village two weeks ago. under arrest are ed guard garcia gaon and his brother roger and a third man.

as nbc's lucy cavanaugh shows us, the prime minister is calling the situation the biggest tragedy his country has suffered in years. >> reporter: well, this is being called the greatest wildfire tragedy in recent years. certainly one of the deadliest. there are several fires still blazing, but the deadliest one was in the pedrogao grande area. police believe that the fire began on saturday night when lightning struck a tree during a dry thunderstorms about 120 miles north of lisbon. the fire spread quickly engufrling the area surrounding the nearby town. it appears many of the victims, at least 30 of them, burned to death in their cars trying to flee. their vehicles were engulfed by flames that were between two smaller towns in this mountain nuss, dry, forested region. firefighting crews have been struggling to cope, the fire described as violent in at least two of its four fronts. the portuguese prime

between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. in the evening. as storms move through, heavy rain as well. we could see severe thunderstorms, again some isolated flash flooding, we could see gusty damaging winds and hail as well. nice tuesday and wednesday, still hot special on tuesday and we get a break from the mugginess that was out there in full force today. if you were out there exercising you know what i'm talking about. heat returns on tuesday, but the humidity doesn't run until friday. look though, we're still in the 80s across the area. 84 in washington, and with the humidity that is still impressive out there. feeling about 91 degrees at 11:20. no thank you. as we look to tomorrow morning it is a mild start, but a dry start so the weather not having an impact on the commute into work. a mix of clouds and sun as we move towards the lunch time hours still dry, but look at storms back to the west moving into parts of the area. 2:00 p.m. we are seeing storms in the panhandle of west

to move into parts of loudoun and falkner county. 3:00 thunderstorms, heavy rains in part of montgomery, and prince williams county. we see these strong and severe thunderstorms moving through the d.c. metro area. look at the bright colors, that's heavy rain and potential for severe thunderstorms as well. again, we could see some wind damage and some hail. they then move into southern maryland and the eastern shore between 7:00 and 8:00 in the evening. so you want to keep it with nbc 4 throughout the day tomorrow. we'll have the latest on exactly what you can expect, but 7:00 a.m. 76 degrees. 87 around lunch time, breezy and still dry at that point. 4:00 though we are dealing with heavy rain and thunderstorms in the d.c. metro area. 84 degrees. rain and storms then winding down at about 8:00 in the evening. again, that morning commute just fine, heading to the pool not a good idea tomorrow. go tuesday, wednesday,
