story for us. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the state department says it is holding north korea accountable for warmbier's death. >> i have made the worst mistake of my life. >> reporter: otto warmbier was just 21 years old when he pleaded for his freedom. >> otto warmbier has just passed away. >> reporter: a year and a half later, a tragic end to his story. >> it's a brutal regime. and we'll be able to handle it. >> reporter: the white house also releasing a terse statement from the president, condemning north korea. saying, otto's fate deepens my administration's determination. his devastated parents saying in a statement of their own, their son looked uncomfortable and anguished when he returned home, but within

peace, he was at home, and we believe he could sense that. adding, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the north koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible. the prognosis had been grim since warmbier finally returned home last week, carried off a plane in a coma after 17 months of imprisonment in north korea. an official tells nbc news the north koreans claim warmbier contracted botulism, but doctors in cincinnati said they found no signs of botulism. otto warmbier was a carefree college student at the university of virginia, but in january of 2016, his life dramatically changed. when north korea jailed him for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. >> please think of my family. >> reporter: warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. today, the china-based group that brought warmbi

pyongyang, young pioneer tours, tells nbc news it will no longer bring americans to north korea. but as recently as a week and a half ago, that group was still hosting tours, tweeting what it calls a cheeky sell in pyongyang. overnight, senators called warmbier's death a murder, rubio tweeting, otto warmbier should never have been in jail for tearing down a stupid banner and he most certainly should not have been murdered for it. last week, warmbier's father spoke. >> there's no excuse for the way the north koreans treated our son. >> reporter: now some in congress are calling for a ban on all travel by americans to north korea and the state department says it is considering it but as for those three americans who are still being held there, no word on when they might get out, if ever. >> thank you very much. let's bring in nicole wallace.

now from the white house, what do you do? you have the outrage, but what can you really do about it? >> you know what, i was told to watch the president's reaction to these events in terms of how he processed the syria strike, the chemical weapons strike that affect and h affected and injured and killed young children moved him to action and it's not that north korea isn't on the white house's radar. it is. they tell me they work seven days a week on north korea policy, but once the president has been touched by a tragedy like this, he really focused in on it. >> are you suggesting some kind of a surgical military strike? >> i'm not told that there's a cause and effect, but in terms of his attention and his focus on these foreign policy hot spots, when there's something this tangible, he's a father, he loves his children, whatever you think of his politics, sometimes the national security morass comes into deep

when there's a trajly like this. we want to get your take on something else, today's special election in georgia's sixth congressional district. it's the most expensive house race in history and it's coming down to a veteran republican and an upstart democrat but the real person on the ballot maybe president trump himself. nbc is at the polling place near atlanta. good morning to you. >> reporter: the polls opened here just a few moments ago but president trump is already up and tweeting about this race, writing, karen handel for congress. she will fight for lower taxes, great health care, trong security. more than 140,000 people have already voted early, unheard of for an off-year congressional race, and spending has already topped a record $50 million. this morning, the most expensive house race ever is coming down to the wire. how have the last 24 hours been? >> exciting. there is e

>> reporter: democrat jon ossoff polling neck and neck with republican karen handel in georgia's sixth district. >> there are many in this community, myself among them, who have deep concerns about the direction of things in washington, about the integrity and the competence of this administration. >> reporter: this suburban mom says one reason she supports ossoff is hillary clinton's defeat. >> our way of apologizing for not paying attention and just assuming that everything would be okay, and now we're awake. >> reporter: the president tweeting his support for handel, who's slamming ossoff for living just outside the sixth district, and for his out-of-state donors. >> a squirrel is going to get a pretty decent percentage of the vote if he has $30 million behind him. >> reporter: this volunteer says handel's experience makes her the obvious choice. >> i know she's a true conservative, and i know she stands for family values. >> reporter: the last-minute push coming after a fringe political action committee released this stunning ad tying ossoff's supporters to last week's shooting at

baseball practice. >> now the unhinged left is endorsing and applauding shooting republicans. when will it stop? it won't if jon ossoff wins on tuesday. >> reporter: both candidates have denounced the ad, but this local gop official says rejecting extremism is one reason handel might win. >> i think that ossoff is tied to a lot of extreme liberal folks. they're the ones that have been funding his campaign. >> reporter: and that local gop official says he's glad both candidates denounced that ad and he didn't want to politicize the shoot bug this race has turned bizarre and heated at times. handel herself has said that she received a white powder and a threatening letter at her home last week. the fbi is investigating. guys, this has been a bizarre race and today's the big day. >> gabe, thank you very much. nicole, let's bring you back in. you know the expression, follow the money. you look at the amount of money being spent on both sides of this race by democrats and republicans, it tells

what is at stake? >> well, what's at stake is bragging rights and special elections are always -- we always project on to them more than what is necessary. when scott brown won in 2010, he won a special election, republicans told a national story about anti-obama momentum as the cause of that health reform bill. expect either side to tell a national story about momentum, either against the president or really sort of acceptance of his penchant for disrupting business as usual in washington should the republican win. >> both sides have a lot on the line here. this is a traditionally republican district, although president trump barely won this particular district. on the other hand, democrats can't just keep saying, oh, we came closer than anyone expected. they need to get some real victories if they're going to have a threat of taking the house back. >> they do but you have to look at the places where they've come up short. so far, they've closed, i think, with 20 points in kansas, came closer than they've ever come i

state so even though it's a swing district, it would be a symbolic victory for democrats if they can pick off a congressional district in georgia. >> all right, nicole wallace. thank you very much. also this morning, there's new controversy over the are republicans' push to overhaul health care. it's one of the most important pieces of legislation of the trump presidency. and with gop lawmakers crafting it in secret, democrats staged an overnight protest on capitol hill. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has that story. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt, good morning to you. senate republicans say they could have an outline of their health care proposal as early as wednesday, aiming for vote by the july 4th recess but republicans have been working behind closed doors, exactly what they accused democrats of doing when they crafted obamacare. now democrats are ready to declare war. >> you're fighting back. we're fighting back. >> reporter: overnight, democrats

talk-a-thon on the senate floor, threatening to delay all business unless republicans open up their health care talks to the public. senator minority leader chuck shumer accusing republicans of a bill that hurts the middle class. >> they're writing their bill under the cover of darkness because they're ashamed of it. >> reporter: the republican majority leader firing back. >> obamacare is collapsing around us and the american people are desperately searching for relief. >> reporter: democrats taking turns tearing into the gop. >> so i say to the republican leadership, what are you afraid of? bring that bill out. >> there's no mark-up. there are no committee hearings. it's just 13 dudes. >> if this bill were as wonderful as its proponents would like us to believe, it would be out in the open. >> reporter: republicans under fire after promising to repeal and replace obamacare for eight years. the biggest sticking point, medicaid. conservatives want to spend less, while moderates want more coverage for low-inco

families. adding pressure, the president privately telling senate republicans the bill passed by the house is mean because of its limited coverage. after he praised the legislation in the rose garden. >> this is a real plan. this is a great plan. >> reporter: still, the white house trying to keep the focus on health care and the rest of the president's agenda with the russia probe looming large. meanwhile, there could be some changes coming here at the white house. an official says press secretary and communications director sean spicer could leave the podium and take on a more strategic role. there's no firm time line or even a final decision. spicer made headlines saying the president could release details by the end of this week about whether there are tapes of his private conversations with former fbi director james comey. >> lot of interest in that one. kristen welker at the white house, thank you very much. >> there's a lot of reaction this morning to something else that happened at the white house. jaredhn

administration and today he begins an important trip to the middle east. nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson has more on that story. hallie, good morning. >> hi, good morning to you. it wasn't so much what jared kushner said but that he said it at all after five months in the administration, making his most high-profile public comments from the white house. this time it was about one of the projects he's most involved in, working to overhaul the government bureaucracy. and today, he leaves for the middle east, another piece of the portfolio for somebody who's almost always in the room but rarely center stage. >> reporter: often seen but rarely heard until now. >> it's very exciting. >> reporter: jared kushner, one of the most important voices in the president's ear using that voice at the white house. and that made plenty of noise, even trending on twitter. >> from the private sector -- >> reporter: as kushner made his most high-profile public appearance yet. >> seriously, what does his voice sound like? >> reporter:

soft-spoken but high powered son-in-law talking tech with some of the biggest names in the industry. >> many of our federal systems are decades old. >> reporter: but one of kushner's roles to reenvent government. >> the department of defense, for example, still uses 8-inch floppy disks. >> reporter: may be nothing compared to his next challenge. >> if you can't produce peace in the middle east, nobody can. >> reporter: this week, we may begin to find out. kushner, a family friend of the israeli prime minister. >> can i reveal, jared, how long we've known you? >> reporter: leaves today for a trip to the middle east to try to jump start high stakes talks with both the israelis and pal stillians on peace that has evaded presidents of both parties since before the 36-year-old was born. >> i think we're going to make a deal. >> reporter: a white house official acknowledges any peace agreement would take time, cautioning this is just the first of what will probably be many trips to the region by kushner and others working closely with secretary of state rex tillerson and national security adviser

still, skepticism from some. >> i don't think it can be solved by sending someone who knows very little about the region and very little about the complexities of modern diplomacy. >> reporter: kushner and another of the president's advisers are set to hold talks separately with benjamin netanyahu this week. kushner's portfolio is not diminishing. even as multiple sources tell nbc kushner has come under scrutiny in the special counsel's russia investigation. >> hallie jackson, thank you. lot of other stories we want to tell you about, including tensions running high in europe after a string of new terror attacks. in paris a man was killed when he rammed a car loaded with weapons into a police convoy. and in london, a suspect has now been charged in that van attack on pedestrians outside of a mosque. nbc chief global correspondent bill nealy has the latest on that. >> reporter: good morning, matt. police are still questioning the man who admits carrying out

diverse and tolerant city are questioning too. when this wave of terror attacks will end. but the fear isn't just here, because this is a tale of two cities. two capitals, two vehicles used as weapons, but two very different attackers. in paris, a man known to police as an extremist used his car to ram a police van on the city's famed champs-elysees. he died inside the vehicle. police found weapons and gas canisters. in london, a man unknown to police used his van to target muslim worshippers. he lived. police preparing to charge him with terrorism. he was darren osborne from wales, a 47-year-old father of four who didn't appear on any extremist watch list. he had, it seems, one simple motive. >> he said, i did it and i want to kill some muslims. >> reporter: and he drove from his home in wales to do it, renting the n

175 miles to north london. his family said he wasn't racist. it was a muslim imam who protected him from being beaten. >> we managed to surround him and to protect him from any harm. >> reporter: united against all terror once again in london, there are messages of defiance and resilience, but many muslims here have told me they now feel very unsafe. >> it just makes you think that if that's happening somewhere where we're supposed to be safe, where is safe. >> london is a resilient city. >> reporter: the mayor reassures, the flowers grow and london carries on, but so too do the terror attacks. four attacks in britain in three months now, and even though the family of this attacker say he was a troubled man, police are questioning him about terrorism, not about a hate

matt, savannah. now to this extreme weather that faced tens of millions of people today. the storm here, i think i saw dorothy and toto fly by the wind. >> that's calmed down but now we have two stories to talk about. possible tropical storm affecting the gulf and we've got that brutal heat out west. we're going to look at first the tropical storm system that would become cindy. it's 345 miles south southeast of morgan city, louisiana, 40 mirp miles per hour winds, it's moving northwest at 8 and it's not the land fall we're worried about, even though it will come in with heavy rain. the heaviest rain is to the east of the system and so we do have tropical storm warnings now stretching from cameron, louisiana, all the way to the mississippi/alabama border and i should say cameron, texas. i meant louisiana. i'm sorry. but what we are looking at is this system, bringing heavy rain over an

gotten anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of rain in the last couple of weeks, and so the rainfall amounts here, locally, 8 to 10 inches to 12 inches of rain could cause massive flooding, and the heat. phoenix's all-time record, 122, we should see 120 in phoenix, 114 in tucson. yuma, 121, palm springs, 121, las vegas will get to 116, and in phoenix, they've canceled flights for american airlines because once that heat really gets going, the plane -- the pilots don't have what they need in their manual to tell them how to fly above 122 degrees. so it's going to be very interesting there. we're headed to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

good morning. we are back, 7:30 on a tuesday. it's the 20th of june, 2017. that is a look at our bustling control room, although it's not bustling all that much this morning. what are they doing in there? quiet and subdued. that's all right. >> it's a mindful tuesday. they're meditating right now. >> let's get to some headlines on a tuesday morning. president trump is calling north korea a brutal regime following the death of otto warmbier, the 22-year-old who was release bid that regime last week suffering from severe brain damage. in a statement, warmbier's parents said their son's awful, torturous mistreatment ensured his death. a judge will hear arguments today on whether the names of the jurors in bill cosby's sexual assault

made public. the jury deadlocked, resulted in a mistrial last week. prosecutors are saying that if you release the names, that could make it harder to select a jury next time. they are planning to retry the comedian. and take a look at this incredible video from a zoo in south korea. you can see a baby elephant fall into the water. the adult elephants kind of start to panic as the baby struggles just to keep his head above the surface. a second adult elephant rushes over to the side of the pool. together, they run over to the shallow end so they can get in the water. you know what they do? they save that baby. you can even see a third elephant pacing frantically in the background. get in there. the two elephants stood on the side of the baby and lifted the calf's head above the water surface, even guiding the baby to the shallow end. and all worked out okay. >> i mean, that's exactly what people would do. >> yes. >> seriously. they reacted exactly like any mother or father. >> i don't think my heart can take that video. that's

also this morning, tiger woods is speaking out in the wake of his dui arrest. he's revealing he's receiving professional help. carrie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. tiger woods is telling supporters that he's seeking help now managing his medicine kag. last month, on a police dash cam video, you could see tiger woods slurring his speech, paerg d disoriented. he was eventually arrested for dui but he told police he had not been drinking but rather that had taken a mixture of prescription drugs. >> i'm placing you under arrest. >> reporter: just weeks after a disoriented tiger woods was arrested for driving under the influence, the golf icon released a statement on twitter, now saying he's receiving professional help, hoping to, quote, manage my medication and the ways that i deal with back pain and a sleep disorder. tiger adding, i want to thank everyone for the amazing outpouring of support and understanding. >> put your feet together facing

>> reporter: in may, the world saw woods in this dash cam video, in handcuffs, under arrest for a dui in jupiter, florida. >> do you know where you are right now? >> i do not know. >> reporter: pretty found the 14-time major champion asleep in his career with two flat tires, appearing disoriented woods told officers he was not drinking. >> have you been drinking today? >> no. >> reporter: but according to police, he did admit to being on prescription medications, including the powerful painkiller vicodin. >> have you taken any medication today? >> reporter: and according to this unredacted police report, he was also on an anti-anxiety medication. woods hasn't been seen on a golf course since february, recovering from his latest surgery for a lower back injury. but he was seen out with his children over the father's day weekend. for the better part of two decades, woods has been the biggest name in golf, racking up major after major, but in 2009, his career

record $50 million. matt, back to you. >> that's how much is at stake. this morning, the state department is demanding the release of three americans still being held in north korea after the death of otto warmbier. the 22-year-old died on monday just days after his release from north korea. he was in a coma when he arrived back home in ohio last week. his family says he was in that condition for most of the 17 months that he was imprisoned in north korea. warmbier was accused of trying to steal a propaganda poster. the president has condemned what he calls the brutal north korean regime. a new report out this morning is giving parents some guidance on a difficult but very important issue, how to keep gender stereotypes in the media that from having too much influence on their children. here's nbc's joe friar. >> reporter: what is your kid watching and how does it impact their feelings about gender?
