baton down the hatches it's going to be a busy morning and busy week in washington. senate republicans are beginning the final push toward a likely vote on their new healthcare bill coming up this week, but some gop lawmakers are pushing for that vote to be delayed. at the u.s. supreme court it's the last day of the current term. there is speculation that judge anthony kennedy may aannoyance his retirement. and there's a new twist tied to russia's meddling in the presidential election. president trump after failing to admit that it even happened for a long time is now accusing the obama administration of failing do more to try to stop it. we're covering it all this morning beginning with peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: they're going to need major surgery for the healthcare bill if it's to pass this week. the president has been making personal phone calls to a handful

one of them saying don't discount his ability to persuade. his is more of a support role in a party negotiating with very little room for error. >> this morning on the senate's healthcare bill the president providing his prognosis. >> i don't think we're that far off. but i think we're going to get there. >> and the his prescription. >> i want to see a bill with heart. health care's a very complicated subject from the standpoint that you move it this way and that group doesn't like it. you move of it a little bit over here and a very narrow path. >> the challenge balancing the competing interests of reluctant republicans on the right worried the bill doesn't go far enough and those closer to the center anxious about the impact of propose medicaid cuts. with a vote expected this week, the gop can only afford to lose two senators or the bill fails. five oppose its current version and both sierds voicing reservations. >> there's no way we should be wroet voting on this next week. i had a hard time believing wisconsin constituents ormy

the fact that previous administration anoungsd sanctions against russia back in december. with mr. obama saying he discussed the issue of russian hacking with president putin himself. >> our goal continues to be to send a clear message to russia, or others, mott to do this to us because question do stuff to you. >> but even some democrats are questioning the obama administration's handling of the issue with the top democrat on the house intelligence committee now saying president obama did not go far enough. >> i think the obama administration should have done a lot more when it became clear that not only was russia intervening but it was being directed at the highest levels of the kremlin. >> and while the president deals with persistent allegations that some of mr. trump's associates may have colluded with the kremlin to win, mr. trump tried to change the subject tweeting hillary clinton colluded with the democrat party in order to beat crazy berniea

unfair to bernie. >> reporter: the question for president trump now, what are will he do to prevent russia or any other country from meddling in future u.s. elections. a number of lawmakers including many of his fellow republicans want him to get tougher on russia. all eyes will be on an upcoming meeting he'll have with president putin slated for next week. all right. thanks. as we've mentioned a lot of eyes on the u.s. supreme court this morning. it is the last day of the current term and there are two important unanswered questions. what's going to happen with president trump's controversial travel ban and will justice anthony kennedy retire? nbc pete williams is there. >> reporter: this year the suspense doesn't involve those rulings, it's all about the travel ban and whether justice kennedy

president trump is asking the supreme court to take up his appeal of two lower court rulings that have blocked the administration from carrying out his plan to stop issuing visas for 90 days for travel to the u.s. from six muslim countries. the white house says it's a matter of national security. a 90-day pause to assess the reliability of the visa background information in those countries associated with terrorism. lower courts says it's religious discrimination citing candidate trump's own words. >> we're calling for a total and complete shut down of muslims entering the united states. >> the justice department wants a hold on those lower court rulings so the government can start enforcing the travel ban while it's on appeal. and the court's last day comes with speculation about a retirement. this year some friends of justice anthony kennedy say he's been thinking about it. he turns 81 in a month after 29 years on the supreme court. with four mostly conservative justices and four

ones, kennedy is often the decider, the man in the middle. kennedy plus the conservatives lose he loogsen the reins on money and campaigns and strengthen gun rights. kennedy plus the liberals made same sex marriage the law of the land, upheld abortion rights and limited use of the death penalty. conservatives like ted cruz long dreamed of the day he'll step down. >> the next vacancy is where we have the ability to get back and restore our basic coninstitutional protection. >> reporter: groups that help with the neil gore sich nomination say think they daid doubt he'll retire this year. the coming hours may provide the answers. >> thank you very much. we've got a little bit to chew on. >> yes, we do. >> good morning to both of you. >> good morning. let's start with healthcare. house mitch mcconnal's strategy

bill would become more popular as they understood what was in it. they have the opposite dynamic they're trying to ram through this bill before people figure out what's in it because they know if people understand what's in the bill and how they're affected by it it's going to be less popular than it already is. >> we have the cbo score before the vote takes place on thursday so there will abe little bit more information for them to chew on. >> he's trying to rush this before the 4th of july recess because he knows if this gets delayed by a week or two it's only going to take on more water. >> this san interesting world. for a very long time president trump does not even admit that the russians meddled in the election, now he's willing to say, okay, they meddled and if they do, it's your former boss's fault, president obama. so looking back, and according to this washington post story, president obama was aware that vad puladimir putin himself was directing some of that meddling.

>> what makes it hard to take president trump's critique seriously we know what response was mobilized by the obama ziegs is something president trump and his team were trying to undermine before he took office. >> you have a top official quoted in the wosh post story saying i think we kind of choked on this. >> matt, the thing that people need to understand about this is it totally unprecedented. it's not unusual for russians to engage in trying to destabilize our democracy or mess around in cyber space. it's unprecedented for them to hack those e-mails and release them with a clear motive. and we learned the less opens of what happened in 2016. what we do d do was succeed in protecting our voting systems and we allowed people to cast their ballots and register and do that without any interference. but we need to look at this hack and leak strategy that the russians used that did have an impact on the

packed tourist bus suddenly began to take on water and rock back and forth, that happened before it sank. we have that story. >> reporter: good morning, matt. it was supposed to be a day of fun in columbia. the popular weekend destination was especially crowded as they celebrated a long holiday weekend. but things took a deadly turn when that ferry started to take on water and went under in a matter of minutes. >> this dramatic video posted on social media shows a four-deck ferry with at least 150 passengers on board rocking from side so to side as it started taking on water. >> translator: we were with our family when we started to hear screams and noise and people started telling us four levels high that had gone out with a lot of people. >> local level passengers quickly scrambling to the top deck as the boat started to sink. everyone should be rushingu

this video speeds up as motor boats, jet skis, and fishing boats race to try and help. then chaos as the ferry's bottom decks collapse. >> translator: people began to climb on to other people to be able to get out. so there were a lot of injured people. >> 99 people were rude, dozens remain unaccounted for this morning. >> translator: it was incredible to see all of the survivors start arriving. everyone pulled together and started to help. >> drivers spent the afternoon searching for mission passengers. survivors say the ferry was overcrowded and there were not enough life jackets for everyone on board. >> divers are expected back in the water today to search for the missing. and they say they're still investigating the cause of the accident. back to you. now to those nervous moments on a flight we showed you at the top of the show. the plane was shaking so

violatel violently the pie lot told passengers to start praying. they said they heard a loud bang from the engine before that shaking started. the bone rattling vibration. it went on for nearly two hours before the plane turned back and made a safe emergency landing. >> it was shattering, shattering, shattering, and we thought we were going down. >> we were pulling out the life jacket, pretty much preparing. but we thought there was a good chance we were going to go down. >> they say the engineers are emergencying the plane for what it calls a technical issue. the passengers were transferred to the next available flight. you can even imagine two hours. >> if something happens like that two minutes is a long time. you can imagine sitting there for two hours. >> thank god they landed safely, though. let us get a check at the

>> we have a lot of heat out west and it's part of the reason we saw this fire spread up to 900 acres this is in santa clarita just north of l.a. it was a car crash that ignited the nearby dry bush brush and that fire jumped over a bridge and continued to spread with that dry brush and temperatures out that way very hot. now, in the southwest we do have 16 million people under some sort of heat advisory or heat warning for the heat that's going to continue for one more day with high pressure in control, temperatures still coming across the land, so it keeps things very, very hot. palm springs 117 degrees today, las vegas 108, phoenix should make up to 113. temperatures will start to cool off to a little closer to average. we'll drop by about 5 degrees or so in the middle of the week. your local forecast is coming up in the next 30 seconds.

gabe has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. half of the hot car deaths so far this year have happened right here in texas. unfortunately it's something we hear about every summer. temperatures inside a hot car can sky rocket 20 degrees in just ten minutes. >> this morning in texas, three tragic cases of children dying after being trapped in scorching hot cars. in fofrt worth a 3-year-old somehow climbed into a car in 90-degree heat, his heartbroken parents finding him unresponsive 45 minutes later. >> this baby did what any other kid would do, run and try to hide or something. >> in houston a 7 month old died after his father forgot him inside his car. and in parker county cynthia randolph is now under arrest. police say she admitted to locking her 16 month and 2-year-ch

didn't know before when it came to john f. kennedy. what were you looking to do? >> explode a few myths. there's a mountain of evidence over the last 60 years that's been hiding in plain sight, matt, and we took a deep dive into this great supply. >> it occurs to me when i said in the introduction there, the first catholic president, i let it just roll off my tongue. and yet you go back to that time, there were a lot of people in this country who didn't think that would ever happen. it was monumental. >> i was 20 years old, i was in college and i'd forgotten what an incredible issue it was. today, we don't think about it. but back then it was an enormous issue. >> is it fair or unfair to draw a comparison or create a comparison between john f. kennedy as a cathic being elected president and fast forward to barack obama

president. >> i think he got to be president because of the breaks that john f. kennedy made. other thing about that time, my parents were dirt-road democrats. they were success spivs john f. kennedy, catholic and from this very keiththy family in massachusetts. they didn't feel connected to him. and it's striking when you look at it, he was the end of a crowd. we had a missouri senator was highly regarded, linden johnson, they all wanted to be the democrat candidate. he was the dpie that was thought of as the play boy on the senate. and as you said at the beginning i didn't think there was anymore i could learn from this but these two guys have turned up a mountain of stuff. >> one of the things he did that no one had done before he was hired a pollster, a young guy named lou harris. and harris taught him that for example religion was actually a two-edge sword. there were all kinds of independent oriented catholics who came out to vote for

and seeing that balance and much more importantly getting kennedy to talk about it, unlike, say, al smith in 1928, kennedy would bring it up. >> we've talked a lot, tom and i have talked about this and we talk about it on this show a lot, that campaigns these days go on for it seems like an eternity and yet there is a very important vetting process that is a part of the length of that campaign. but in the book you guys go back and you look at really was it a yun-year campaign, it was a five-year process under taken by john f. kennedy to prepare himself and put himself in the right position to be elected president. >> right. he ruleeally got started in '56 the democratic convention where he was choosing his rung mate. and suddenly this inexperienced senator nearly captured it at the convention and he burst on to the scene and took

kennedy, tom, and i guess depending on what your experience was with him at the time, you would have one opinion or another. string puller, backroom deal maker was a couple of the things you've heard. but something interesting in the book, though, is that within the campaign his reputation was different. >> very different. the money, yes, that's a given. but we found in our deep dive into all this stuff that his advice, his orders, his browbeating of his sons was almost every maid paid attention to. he had a concept of this game, the old way, back rooms, big deals with bosses and whatever. kennedy was the first guy to run for president in a way that let the voters in. and that put him at -- his father yielded the turf, but to say that he was a significant influence on that campaign would be a grow

overstatement. >> my feeling about him was always he said jump and the son said, how high. >> remember how after one of those things curtis, john kennedy i think got up and said, well thank you very much, dad, for your advice and everything, but here's what we're going to do. >> it was about going to west virginia, he opposed to going to west virginia, turned out to be a very biblical primary. they had a pow would you and the old man says you don't dare go there there are no catholics in west virginia. and john kennedy said well we've heard from the ambassador and this what we're going to do. >> it's always striking to me about the relationship between john kennedy and the father is that the kennedy guys, you know, including bobby, also learned however from the father about how do a deal. they took it to the next generation. this is a corporate kind of campaign in terms of how they organize it, and the old man had a hard time dealing with that. >> let me say this, i

and say, hey, look it's not me ps you or it's not you it's me what should you do. >> always better to communicate. but the person we're going to talk about is the pediatrician. >> okay. >> so think about this. this is a monumental change for kids. >> yeah. >> going from having a pediatrician, adolescent doc transitioning to the adult doctor, it's a big change. >> right. >> you're not going to be dealing with this for a little while but parents at the start of puberty should start having this conversation with their pediatrician. >> so when about is the right time to say i'm ready to move on from the pediatrician to another doctor? >> so basically these are the kinds you things you want to think about. you want to ask the preed decision's practice at what age do they stop seeing kids. you want to know how many teenagers are in the practice or do they have an adolescent room so the kids aren't sitting there with all the other babies in the waiting room. what's their policy on confidentiality. are they going to at a certain age your pediatrician should be speaking with your child confidentially for

and also probably most importantly especially for young girls, do they provide gyn care or contraceptive counseling. >> this seems like an obvious one, you need a specialist, you need something your doctor cannot provide zblour right. listen, we don't want this to happen, but of course in your lifetime you might develop a chronic illness of some sort, whether it's heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune disease and you're going to be referred to a specialist. often times that specialist the participate in your insurance as a primary care provider and you can ask them, you can say can you still function as my primary care doctor. but of course sometimes they can't. now i will say of course that the specialist very often because of the nature of the illness will cover a lot of things four such as laboratories and vaccines. but that's one place where you certainly might transition from a regular primary care doctor who handles everything to a specialist who can also provide that care for you. >> this next one is i think a big one.

er you show up and you wait two hours, you ask him you can explain a little more detail he or she gives you some really quick reactions. you need connect. >> absolutely. that speaks to communication. if you walk out of your doctor's office and you're thinking to yourself, what did the doctor say, what diagnosis, what does this mean for me, that's not a good thing. also the their putic approach. imagine if you as the patient feel like you'd like to be more aggressive in your treatment and the doctor's very conservative, or vice-versa. and a big one for a lot of people is is your doctor going to collaborate with your other doctors. are they open to communicating and relaying information between your specialists. >> we should point out that although we can break up with you, you can break up with us if you want. >> yes, yes, yes. this is the two-way street once in a while. and, again, it's not like a marriage per se when you can say irreconcilable differences there's a personality conflict. that's not going to fly. first and foremost is that the physician is on
