ride, we're learning you may have been paying extra for years. and video from a takedown in a metro train station. a passenger pepper sprayed and held to the floor. now we're hearing from a witness who says the punishment didn't fit the crime. good morning to you. i'm eun yang. i'm chris lawrence in for aaron. it's 6:00 and we're still seeing backups in the deadly crash that happened four or five hours ago. >> our whole team is working to get you out the door on time. we'll check on the forecast in a minute. but first, let's go to transportation reporter adam tuss who is live on the scene of that district heights crash. adam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. let's show you the aftermath of that crash there. unbelievable scene here as a huge telephone pole absolutely just snapped in half after this car hit that pole at a high rate of speed and

actually pulling down off of the telephone pole. the power company is going to have to come out here on silver hill road and do some work. that's why the westbound lanes are still shut down. want to show you what that car looked like when it actually crashed into that pole last night. it was flipped over on its side, absolutely banged up in every direction now. this is a six-lane roadway here divided down the middle. the speed limit here is about 35 miles an hour. so the car had to be going way faster than that to do that kind of damage to the pole and to itself. horrible situation here this morning. this is near the suitland metro. be aware if you're coming into this area, you're going to see the westbound lanes closed down right now. eastbound is getting by. that will create backups here for you. melissa mollet has the work-arounds coming up for you. >> thank you, adam. taking a look now at this breaking news in district heights. eastbound silver hill between brooks and pennsylvania avenue, where adam was standing. yoaw

watchdog group. this in a news conference minutes ago. the country faces other eu probes including one into its online search advertising platform. eun? >> angie, thank you. >> just days after metro boosted the fares you pay to get around, we've learned that some riders have been paying the wrong fare for a few years now. >> it's not a ridiculous amount of money. metro discovered that some riders pay too little, others too much. about 5% of riders were either over or under charged about $.05 per ride. metro discovered the error when it updated new fares which went into effect this week. any customers overcharged more than two bucks since 2015, they'll get a refund on their registered smart trip card. video you're looking at shows metro police officers using pepper spray on a suspected fare evader, moments after they

we don't know what happened before the video started, but a black lives matter activist tells me it is similar to what happened friday on the national mall where a group of young black men were handcuffed for selling water without a permit. the witness who shot the video explains why she kept recording. >> and i felt like it was my duty to at least hold the police accountable for what was going on. >> in this arrest, at gallery place, a metro spokesperson says the man ignored officers' repeated instructions and then became combative. chopper 4 captured a water rescue on the potomac river. take a look. two men were fishing when the boat was pushed into the seneca breaks rapids and the waves knocked them out of the boat. montgomery county fire and rescue says folks in another boat pulled the man out of the water and rescue crews were even able to recover their boat. we have a sad update to share. a boy from sterling,

swimming pool. loudoun now reports that he passed away monday morning from the same accident that killed his twin sister. on saturday, the 2-year-old twins wandered into the family's pool on acorn court. the sheriff's office said their mother found the toddler unconscious. this time of the year, drowning is a huge concern, especially for parents. we've put together an interactive tool that shows you how having the right equipment around the pool can prevent a tragedy. i've posted it on my facebook page. you can open the nbc washington app and search for safety. >> it can happen in an instant, so fast. >> d.c. police are investigating a swim instructor's death as a murder. back in april, scott was shot during eye robbery in southeast d.c. it left him paralyzed. he eventually died of a blood clot back in may.

injuries that caused his death came as a result of being shot. police have not made any arrests in that case. here's a look at your top stories this morning at 6:07. it was a breaking story you saw here yesterday morning. that deadly crash which delayed drivers for miles on the beltway. we now know that was a woman who was killed. police say her car was hit from behind and then she was out of the car and was hit by another vehicle. her name has not been released. today maryland state board education is meeting in baltimore and are expected to discuss the graduation grate scandal rocking schools in prince george's county. on monday, governor larry hogan sent them a letter asking for an investigation. coming up, we'll have reaction from one of maryland's delegates on the accusations of corruption. senate republicans are trying to determine how to move forward after an analysis of their health care plan that congressional budget office estimates 15 million people wo

while 22 million would not have coverage in a decade. cbo also says the plan would cut federal spending. >> that was the u.s. response to a chemical attack in syria back in april. this morning, the white house is warning president al assad not to do it again. white house press secretary sean spicer issued a statement last night saying the u.s. has spotted, quote, potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the syrian government. spicer warned if there is another attack using chemical weapons, assad and his military will, quote, pay a heavy price. later today, you'll be able to hear about a plan to rehabilitate the lincoln memorial. the national park service is hosting open house tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at its headquarters on ohio drive. comment forms will be available and you'll be able to comment on the project's website through

even an isolated rumble or two of thunder in parts of southern maryland. one lonesome clap of thunder there to the west of frederick, maryland. the thunder showers moving out on to the -- over the water there of the potomac. prince frederick to calvert beach, hughesville. that's where most of the rain is. there are lonely sprinkles in the d.c. metro area. i i can't give it 100% dry. but rain amounts will be very light. may bring a few hundredths of an inch of rain in the rest of southern maryland. elsewhere, raindrops add up to maybe a hundredth of an inch or so. that's it. current temperature at national airport, it's been milder. 70 degrees. most of the outlying suburbs are 50s and low 60s this morning. as you plan out the day. a few light rain showers between now and 9:00. maybe drying out after that. temperatures staying mostly in

"news4 today" begins with breaking news. that breaking news out of prince george's county. mangled metal. a car flipped on its side. someone died in a terrible crash on silver hill road. now we want to look at the scene live in district heights. not far from pennsylvania avenue. part of the road has reopened in the past hour and investigators are trying to figure out what happened. good morning. it is 6:30. another busy morning for you. we're following a number of developing stories at this hour. we have crews spread out across the region tracking developments on prince george's county's allegations and learning about the impact of the crash in district heights. first, let's start with rain popping up this morning. chuck, sheena, what are you seeing? >> had a few

while ago. those have dried up. the heavier showers across parts of southern maryland. >> seeing heavier but lightning strokes in some of that, too. as we go through time right now, 70 degrees, chance of a shower by 7:00 a.m. we go into the noon hour passing showers, 78 degrees. low humidity. by 5:00 p.m., temperatures upper 70s. we'll jump to the heavier rain in calvert county, across the bay. we'll continue to watch those showers. some of them have been showing signs of lightning. very light rain in the district and around the beltway. but for the most part, this is what the radar looked like. a wide view. most of the area seeing the clouds around. as we go through the day today, you'll notice more clouds from yesterday. temperatures will honestly still be very comfortable. it will be a nice day. by the end of the week, humidity and heat, it all comes back for the weekend and some storms. we'll show you that in a second. let's check the roadways with me his a. good morning. >> good morning. chopper 4 over the beltway at colesville road. the outerp

light this morning. that is great news. back to prince george's county now. silver hill road between brooks drive and pennsylvania avenue in district heights. again, eastbound lanes are open. one westbound lane is now open as well. we're not seeing the backup from before. widening out to the beltway, no major problems but all of that green showing where the rain is falling across the area. we widen out more, you can see a slowdown 95 northbound at prince george's. eun? >> thank you. more details on the impact of the deadly accident in district heights. angie goff at the live desk. angie? >> eun, this is near suitland metro. you'll notice the backups when you approach the area when you take the rails. look at this. a live look. you can see that we have big trick still on hand. utility crews are responding. that utility pole, the telephone pole pretty much snapped in half. as a result, melissa mentioned and so

wires are still in the road. keep in mind, this is a road about 35 miles per hour. that's the speed limit. this car seems to have been travel at a high rate -- at a high pace considering how bad the damage is. you saw the car flipped over on its side. at this point, part of silver hill road closed. the driver did die in that accident. they have not released any details as far as who the victim is. they're trying to figure out what caused the accident. >> angie tharnk you. this was a breaking story we brought you monday morning. we know now that it was a woman who was killed on the inner loop of the beltway near van dorn street. she got rear ended and then she got out of her car and was hit by another vehicle. this is the second deadly accident involving someone getting out their car just in the past few days. on the nbc washington app, we have information to keep you safe if you have an interstate crash or breakdown.

police are promising to crackdown on those atv riders wreaking havoc in our area. this is video from national harbor on sunday. you can see the motorbikes in the streets and even speeding across busy sidewalks. this wasn't the first incident of that day. viewers sent us videos from at least four other places around d.c. where dirt bikes and atvs came roaring through. covering prince george's county, we've got the latest on that graduation grade scandal rocking schools in the county. >> we've been staying on top of this story every step of the way. today, the investigation will move forward when the state board education comes together in baltimore. news 4's justin finch is live in upper marlboro to explain what could come next. justin, good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. today's meeting could give us our first reaction fth

state board of education to the governor's request. also the reaction to these grade changing allegations. you'll recall back on sunday that governor hogan sent them a letter asking them to look into these allegations, which were claims made by the prince george's county public schools boa board. some members of the board saying that students had grades and credits changed by falsely inflated the high school graduation rate out here. maryland delegate jaywalker is supporting calls for an investigation, as well as the county deserves to have the truth in all of this. he's asking that prince george's county school's chief executive officer, kevin maxwell, appear at a hearing. >> these kids to deserve to graduate. if their assignments were turned in late, you should be able to show it to us. >> reporter: now, prince george's county public schools chief executive officer maxwell is

he says they're baseless and have roots and political motivation. >> thank you, justin. as soon as today -- >> we may find out what caused saturday's deadly fire in the bright wood neighbor. a d.c. fire and ems official released findings. but the overall investigation will take time. about 200 people have not been able to return to their apartments on peabody street. one man's body was found inside the building where investigators think the fire started. that person has not yet been identified. here is a look at your top stories right now at 6:36. metro may owe you some i money. because some riders were paying the wrong fare for the last three years. up to 5% were overcharged or undercharged about $.05. metro discovered the error this week. a look at how and when you could get your

these poles are so strong, you have to imagine it was going at a really height rate of speed. we don't have all the details of the crash right now. but the speed limit here on silver hill road is 35 miles an hour. so to hit a pole like that and snap it in half, it had to be going pretty fats. look at the video from overnight that we saw of the car flipped over on its side. this was a serious crash here. one person dead unfortunately. silver hill road shut down. the eastbound lanes have been open for some time. at least one lane is now getting by westbound. but pepco crews are out here now because there were wires down on the road and the state highway administration will have to look at the road as well. if you're coming through the area, it's not marking -- you could hit a backup as you come through this area and the investigation continues. again, one person dead after just an awful crash here overnight. happened around 2:00 this morning. guys, back to you. >> adam, thank you.
