>> it is one of the trying things anything else, we like to reach out to whoever is holding austin, so that we can begin whatever kind of dialogue is necessary to bring him home. >> the u.s. government says there's reason to believe that austin is alive. have they shared with you why they believe that? >> yes. >> can you share anything with us? i know you don't want to do anything that would jeopardize any efforts to bring him home. but can you share anything about why there is that belief? >> i don't think it would be a good idea for us to share that, matt. >> yeah. >> they do share with us. and we need to keep their confidence so that we can keep working well together as a team. >> "the new york times," as you know, had an article, i think it was last weekend that talked about the trump administration creating a back channel communications with the syrians. at the same time this is happening, as you heard us say all morning long, there's also rising tension between the u.s. and syria. how much is that complicating

♪ we're now back at 8:07. if you thought you saw someone trying to kidnap your child, what would you do? >> a lot of parents are asking themselves that after a strange incident in florida. a man was beaten up after he tried to help a little girl he believed was lost. nbc's kerry sanders is in lakeland with the story. >> reporter: good morning. police say what happened at this ballpark was a complete misunderstanding. the parents of a 2-year-old little girl they say lost track of her for, they say, 30 seconds. they looked up and they saw over there, a man holding the child about 100 yards away, walking away. now, that man, who may have been a good samaritan, says that he was asking the little girl, is this your parent? is this your parent? but the parents of the child say they saw something completely different. ran over. the father started beating on the man. and then, someone posted that

man's picture on the internet, telling other parents to be on the lookout. a day at the park turned into somewhat of a nightmare for a florida family, when they thought a stranger was trying to abduct their little girl. >> you know, i thought he was taking my kids. >> reporter: the child's father, speaking to us by phone. >> i wanted to kill the man. >> reporter: according to a police report, this man approached a little girl he thought was lost at a softball game on lakeland, florida, on saturday. >> i sat down and constantly asked the question, where is your daddy? where's your parents? where's your mom? >> reporter: the girls' parents say all they saw was a stranger walking towards this parking lot with their daughter. the mother, on the phone, with 911. >> we took off running, grabbed my kid from him. and then, i hit him. i'm not going to lie. i hit him. >> reporter: when the child's father and some friends caught up to the man, he admits they punched him. >> probably about five or six times.

>> they start hitting me from behind. and they constantly started hitting me. >> reporter: reading from a statement, the girl's mother, who did not want to be shown on camera, says it was the scariest experience of her life. >> how would you react to a stranger carrying your child away from a population of people? >> reporter: police say it was a misunderstanding. >> there's an independent witness that saw it, didn't knower theknow either couple. they saw him looking for an adult. >> reporter: no charges were filed against the parents. and police verified patel was at the park with friends. but the story does not end there. after the incident, a witness posted patel's name, photo and place of employment online, calling him a child predator. >> my whole life is tragic now. and everybody is looking at me funny. and my respect is engaged because nobody will trust me. my life is tarnished. >> reporter: mr. patel says that he has now had to leave town for

>> and some sugar. we're going to stir it up a >> then, we're going to toss in the butter like a butter salad. >> does cubing it make it equal to mix? >> you want them to be large cubes. when you do the smushing, pretend you have lobster claws. you want to get all of the pieces nice and flat. once you get them nice and flat, you will add some lemon juice to ice water. take the ice out. you want it to be nice and cold. pretend this is flat. we're going to mix it up. once it is mixed, it will look kind of awful before you roll it out. it is not going to look like a great dough. you roll it out. and you should see nice chunks of butter in the dough. this is 12 inches by 16 inches. and we're going to do a letter fold. some people don't know how to fold a business letter.
