this happened just before 9:00 last night on pine drive in ak keek. reckless driving may have been a factor. one of the cars was crossing indian head highway when it was hit. the driver is dead. let's check in with dave dildine at wtop for the latest. dave? >> aaron, we're talking about detours for the crash investigation. maryland 210, indian head highway remains closed eight hours later north of independence road and south of 228, near pine lane, near where the crash occurred. indian head highway remains blocked. you probably want the alternate route. in virginia, focus on i-95 today. it will be a busy get away. so far so good. traffic not so bad in woodbridge northbound and southbound. light volume. that's the latest from the traffic center. we've got a hotter forecast now with meteorologist chuck bell. chuck, good morning. >> good morning dave and good morning everybody. off to a lovely start here on a

temperatures are noticeably warmer than we've been the last couple of days. however, there's at least a nice breeze out here. it's a comfortable way to get your day started. currently at 74 at national airport. in maryland, one of the few spots below 70. winchester at 70 degrees. i was supposed to show you this a few minutes ago but the computer ate it. here's a fresh look at the ten-day forecast. 93 today. a chance for a few thunderstorms around tomorrow. 60% chance of storms. know i don't know how -- i'm not that convinced of the coverage area. but i want to give you the heads-up that any of the storms that fire up tomorrow could be on the strong to severe side. i'm optimistic that it will be dry for the fireworks on the fourth of july. the beach forecast, a lot of you are beach bound like myself later on today. that's coming up. chuck, thank you. 5:01. breaking nugs out of springfield, virginia now. >> let's get to erika gonzalez. >> eun, we're hearing that fairfax county police are

the tents are already in place for the festivities. this will become a checkpoint later this weekend. the national park service is saying there is no credible threat to these events, however, they're keeping an eye on any disruptions. a look at the items you cannot bring to the ground this weekend. we're talking about alcoholic beverages, bicycles, fireworks, large bags and boxes, large umbrellas, pets, posters and weapons. once you are here, though, you will be seeing police officers but won't see them all. behind the scenes, a lot is happening. law enforcement keeping an eye on the worldwide threat, including in london. the use of vehicles as weapons. >> recently, not only in the united states but around the world, vehicle attacks are an increasing potential and risk for large events with a lot of people. we are aware of

prosecutors unsuccessfully argued that mallory is a flight risk because wigs and disguises were found in his house. the 60-year-old was released on bond. so get ready for the next government. >> prince george's county executive baker officially kicked off his campaign for governor of maryland. in addition to his campaign talk, the democrat defended the ceo of the school district against allegations of grade fixing. those allegations are being investigated by the maryland state board of education now. prince george's county school ceo kevin maxwell says claims that grades were changed to boost high school graduation rates are false. county executive baker is rejecting a call from the local naacp to hold off on renewing maxwell's contract. >> not at all. not -- absolutely not at all. >> why not? >> because we signed the contract and i decided when we reappointed him, he's doing a good job. >> baker does not think thousands of

in albuquerque, this is at a gravel mine where workers are trapped. initially, four workers were stuck. one pair has been pulled from the gravel. however, two remain waist-deep. this is so dangerous, in fact, that rescue workers cannot use heavy machinery to get the folks out of there. they are laboring by hand. family members have arrived and as you can imagine, it is a very tense and a very delicate situation that we will be monitoring. back over to you. >> erika, thank you. it's 5:13. here are four things to know this morning. a police officer is in grave condition after a shooting in

san antonio. he and another officer stopped two people while on routine patr patrol. shots rang out as they got out of their car. the second officer is in serious condition. members of the firefighting team killed helping to fight an arizona wildfire will be honored today. the fire took place exactly four years ago. nevada is set to become the latest state to start recreational marijuana sales. beginning tomorrow, adults 21 and older can buy up to an ounce of pot for recreational use. nevada will join four other states and d.c. allowing recreational sales. technically, the drug is still illegal at the federal level. the scope of the flint, michigan, water crisis investigation could be expanding. yesterday there was a hearing for nick lyons, the state health and human services director, accused of covering up the news of the lead contamination and faces an involuntary manslaughter charge for the death of one resident. he has pled

today president trump will continue his meetings with south korean president. he's in washington to assure the administration that he will work closely with the u.s. in working with north korea. the two leaders are expected to deliver joint statements later this morning. there have been seven drownings in our area since late may. four of them involve young children. back in april, a child died in this pond outside of his home in loudoun county. his mother is now on a mission to save young lives. she wants a fence built around the pond so this doesn't happen to any other family. >> i miss her smile every day. even her, i have lot of -- i just want to -- not going to come back. >> she has asked the neighborhood association to build that fence. we've reached out to them but they have referred us to their attorneys. the maryland

the environment says a gauge that had small amounts of radioactive material was stolen. officials say it was taken from a construction site the other day. they say the gauge is not a hazard if it's in a shielded position. if tampered with, it could lead to radiation exposure. anyone with information is urged to call them. let's get back to dave dildine of wtop. breaking news on indian head highway. dave? >> this has been an hours long investigation, aaron. it's ongoing in accokeek, maryland. indian head highway remains closed both ways, northbound and southbound at points between 227 and 228. traffic is diverted northbound on to independence road and livingston road. southbound traffic is taken off south of 228 near pine lane. that's the scene of a serious crash. it actually occurred last night. the police work is still unfolding. otherwise, though, volume is fairly light around the region. we're talking about no

the flags are flapping this morning. a nice south breeze averaging 12 miles an hour. it's a comfortable morning out there. temperatures in the low 70s across most of the region. they will be quickly jumping, though, out of the 70s and into the 80s before you know it. 72 in sterling right now. 72 also for centerville, vienna, virginia and 74. cheverly, maryland, at 73. beverly beach, 74 degrees. they're still not in the up position, aaron in la plata. they have a few more minutes. if you're planning out the day, all sunshine through the morning hours. there is a slight chance for an isolated thunderstorm or two after 3:00 or 4:00. highest rain chances along the i-81 corridor. not the i-95 corridor. so if you're going out to the quicken loans national golf tournament x maybe an isolated little pop-up storm today. but i'm optimistic, they will be able to play golf without an

singer and dreams of becoming a veterinarian. her mother is trying to cope with unimaginable loss. she was the 13-year-old hit by a vre train wednesday afternoon. she was walking on the railroad bridge near manassas with her brother and cousin when the train came. her cousin says he was able to jump out of the way. he yelled for her to jump as well but she kept running. >> just had a flash and that train was coming around the corner. i jumped to the other side of the tracks and i said reyhan jump. she kept running. she was in shock. she just ran, like -- >> family members started a go fund me account to raise money for her funeral. her mother says she would want it to be a celebration. another northern virginia community will celebrate the life of a beloved teacher and coach today. visitation will be held for leonard schultz this afternoon. he died in a crash on the beltway over the weekend. schultz taught special education

team at james madison high school in vienna. the visitation and a funeral tomorrow will be held at vienna presbyterian church on park street northeast. an arundel county school employee and football coach is charged with a sex offense involving a student. marvin leon brown jr. was arrested on wednesday. police charge that brown was sending the student text messages and inappropriately touched her on top of her clothing. brown has been at north county high school in glen burnie since 2015. anyone with information or any other victims should call police. today is the first full day at the naval academy in annapolis. yesterday the class of 2021 was welcomed. the class includes more than 1200 new cadets. they made stops to get a signature buzz cut. the men and a short polished look for women. they were joined by family members as well. >> proud day. >> exciting.

voted to spend millions of dollars to better protect the capitol and members' offices at home. yesterday, $12 million was approved to be set aside to beef up security measures. u.s. house committee records show that safety measures could include new panic buttons and surveillance equipment. the committee specifically cited the shooting that injured steve scalise. >> on this the yeas are 257, the nays are 167. the bill is passed. >> with that the house passed an immigration bill yesterday known as kate's law. kate steinle was shot and killed two years ago by an undocumented immigrant. he had previously been deported five times. the bill increasing penalties on undocumented immigrants who re-enter the country illegally after previous deportations. this now goes to the senate. meanwhile, a limited version of president trump's travel ban is in effect. it's facing a new legal challenge. >> news 4'sra
