lot of news coming out of the white house, including that widespread condemnation of president trump's crude twitter attack against mika brzezinski and joe scarborough. this morning they're firing back. we have complete coverage beginning with white house correspondent kristen welker. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. as a candidate donald trump was known for making shocking statements on the campaign trail, but now his tweet attacks take on a whole new meaning. in this case the president tweeting that mika brzezinski was bleeding from a face-lift and said that joe is psycho. the sharpest words may be coming from the hosts themselves this morning. this morning, joe scarborough and mika brzezinski fired back at the president in an op-ed in "the washington post" writing, america's leaders and allies are asking themselves yet again whether this man is fit to be president.

mr. trump will hold a joint statement with the leader of south korea today but isn't planning on taking any questions at this point. >> thanks, to say there's been a lot of reaction to this is almost an understatement. >> absolutely. despite that controversy, president trump is back on twitter this morning talking about the battle over health care. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has that story. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. this is supposed to be the week. this is supposed to be the week, but as the senators scatter to their states for a ten day recess, their effort to overhaul obamacare is unclear this morning and the president has taken to twitter in the last hour or so, writing, if republican senators are unable to pass what they're working on now they should immediately repeal and then replace at a later date. after delaying a vote with divisions between moderates and conservatives between the republican party the top senate republican mitch mcconnell had been set -- had set the goal of today to try to come up with a new plan that he

present an independent budget score keep sore that could be reviewed while the senators were gone so they could vote as early as next week. no word on if that will happen. the white house is confirming that president trump next week when he's at the g 20 summit in hamburg, germany, will meet face-to-face with the russian president, vladimir putin. what's not clear right now, whether president trump will confront his russian counterpart about moscow's meddling in the 2016 election. they have some other topics to talk about including ukraine and syria here. top aides say that the final agenda isn't finalized but we're hearing from the russian foreign minister sergey lavrov said he's optimistic and that both are willing to overcome the abnormality that dominates our relations. back to you. >> thank you. something else we're focusing on this morning is travel. today marks the start of the busy holiday weekend. it is also the first full day that a scaled back

president trump's travel ban is in effect and already how it's being carried out is leading to protests and some confusion. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. what can you tell us? >> reporter: it's been in effect for only a matter of hours and the lawyers are back in court. they said that it's improperly limited who gets to come here and a change has been made -- fiancees now count. lawyers stood by at the l.a. airport, ready to respond to last minute hitches in the case of -- in case of a recurrence of the first executive order. this time around, anyone from the six muslim countries covered by the executive order who already have a visa is allowed to board a flight to the u.s. and to enter the country upon arrival. for the next 90 days anyone from one of those countries who wants to get a visa must have a close family connecon

and the trump administration is defining that family connection narrowly. a parent or child, including in laws, a sibling, spouse or fiance. but that does not include grandparent, aunt, uncle, or brother or sister-in-law. advocates for immigrants are now back in court saying those distinctions don't make sense. the new rules will also dampen business travelers and not just from the six affected countries. >> we don't know what other countries might get added to the ban. they're doing to really question whether or not they want to do business in the u.s. >> reporter: the new rules also mean a 120 day ban on admitting new refugees unless they have a connection to family here. that rule would have blocked mustafa al hasoon who came here from syria's civil war. with no family in the u.s., he says he would have had no place to go. >> syrian people who want to

people need a new life. you know, they cannot enter anymore. >> reporter: the challengers who got the executive order blocked earlier this year are now asking a judge to rule that the government is being far too restrictive about the kind of family relationships that count. a ruling can come next week. >> all right, pete williams, thank you. for more on how things are looking at the airports and the roads to begin the holiday rush let's bring in nbc's gabe gutierrez. he is keeping watch on it all from hartsfield jackson international airport. >> reporter: good morning. a little crowded but the check-in lines are running smoothly. hartsfield said 9 -- 92,000 are expected to go through here today. look at the misery map around the country you see a lot of green and that's very good news. that means no major delays or cancellations and as you mentioned a record number of holiday travelers are expected this weeke.

drive 37 1/2 million, that's up almost 3% over last year. 3.5 million or so are expected to take to the skies. that's up 5% from last year. now, according to the folks over at waze.com, the best time to head out, well, you'll miss your chance if you're leaving today, 7:00. and 11:00 a.m. on saturday. monday, also expected to be a good travel day and traffic is expected to be down ahead of the holiday. the worst time to travel this afternoon between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. now, again, gas prices are expected to be at a 12 year low. airfares 10% cheaper this year than last year, but get here early and have a good trip. >> between 2:00 and 5:00, keep that in mind. a lot more to get to, including an intense manhunt under way for a gunman who killed a recent

in pennsylvania. morgan has more. >> reporter: certainly a sad story because when police originally arrived at the crash scene they thought it was a deadly accident. but authorities now say a promising young woman's life was cut short by a deadly case of road rage. now this morning police in three states are hunting for the man who's responsible. 18-year-old bianca roberson was on her way home from a shopping trip. she was driving along pennsylvania's route 100 when the two-lane highway merged into one. she encountered a man believed to be driving a red pickup truck. >> both of them trying to merge together. and then she was shot. the man in the red pickup truck shot her directly in the head. >> reporter: she died instantly. her car careening off the side of the road into the woods. >> one female operator is not responding. she's not breathing. >> reporter: police are searching for the red chevy pickup and hunting the driver

believed to be a white male with light colored hair between the ages of 30 and 40. >> to that man who fired the shot, turn yourself in now. every second you're out this, you are only making this worse for yourself. >> reporter: the young victim's father distraught. thinking about her final moments. >> i can visualize it in my mind. what happened to my daughter and i know she was scared. >> reporter: bianca roberson had just graduated from high school and was headed to college in the fall. >> we were excited for her. she was excited. we was just happy for her. >> reporter: now her family fighting back tears, remembering the life taken too soon. >> her personality was very loved. she always smiled. >> it's an angel that will be missed but as hard as it is, she's there with her brother. >> reporter: sadly, the victim's older brother died of heart disease back in 2013. police are calling this case a senseless and brutal act of violence and say they will not rest until they find the suspect.

york, central pennsylvania, on into ohio. right now, we've got a very wide swath of severe weather from albany to oklahoma city possible today. 37 million people at risk for wind damage and possible tornados in the plains. for tomorrow western new york, interior sections of new england and on into central pennsylvania for 11 million people the greatest risk for tornados, new york state and parts of northern new england. so we'll be watching this very closely as this system pushes in. cold front moves in from the northwest today. scattered strong storms along the front. saturday the heavier weather moves in the northeast and down into the mississippi and tennessee river valleys. by sunday it moves off shore. drier air moves into the northeast. but look at this. heavy rain from syracuse up into new england. flash flood watches in ever if et cetera -- in effect and down into missouri and oklahoma and arkansas three to five inches as well. so flooding a possibility there

we're okay. the country's not. >> he's so easily played by a cable news host. now, what is that saying to our allies? what is that saying to our enemies? >> white house has defended the president's tweets saying he fights fire with fire. hot, dry weather is fuelling a wave of wildfires in the west. at least 27 large ones are burning in eight states. in arizona the governor saying putting out a fire near prescott is the state's top priority. 3,400 structures are threatened and in california people in east san jose are using hoses to help fight a fire. well, it was a rough start to the day for a st. louis couple. they returned to the parking spot to find that their car had been swallowed by a giant sinkhole. at first they thought their car had been towed, but as they got closer they found the vehicle 20 feet underground w

gushing are from the pipe. a crane was called in to lift the car out of the hole. >> i would say that's a wrap for that car. well, now to tennis superstar venus williams. she is found at fault in a car accident that led to the death of a 78-year-old man. this is days before she gets set to compete in wimbledon. we have the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the accident happened three weeks ago at that intersection behind me. we know that venus williams lives in the area and according to the police report she was turning into a gated community when the accident happened. this morning, police saying tennis star venus williams at fault for causing an accident that killed a man. it happened june 9th at this palm beach guards intersection. >> vehicle accident, north lane boulevard and the drive. >> reporter: according to a newly released police report, 68-year-old linda barson had a greenlight s

cut across in front of her and she was unable to avoid crashing into her. an eyewitness account supports that story. her 78-year-old husband was sent to a trauma center and later died. in a statement from her attorney, she entered the intersection when the light was green and was driving just five miles an hour. she told police she tried to make it through the intersection but was forced to stop because of traffic. leaving her 2010 toyota sequoia suv sticking out into the intersection. according to the police report, williams was at fault for violating the right of way. but she has not been charged with any crime and was not issued any tickets at the time of the accident. there was no evidence williams was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. and no evidence she was distracted by a cell phone according to police. the tennis star is a seven time grand slam champion and is the number ten seed at

violent crashes caught on camera. drivers recklessly blowing through red lights, smashing into on coming traffic. red light runners hitting people too. luckily they're okay. to stop it from happening cities across the country installing red light cameras. catching drivers in the act. fining them up to $700. officials say it works. fatalities from red light running dropped 21% in cities with cameras. but now police are warning about new products on the market designed to make your plate invisible to cameras. like this reflective gel. this reflective spray. and this sensor that shines a burst of light on to the plate so the camera can't see it. a lot of people are going to watch this and say if the products do in fact work, i may want it because no one likes a red light camera.

♪ this is a "news4 today" news break. >> good morning. 9:26 now on a friday, june 30th. i'm aaron gilchrist. a man is dead in springfield after an argument in an alley. the man was found with injuries on the ground near springfield plaza early this morning. he later died at the hospital. fairfax county police say the suspect ran from the scene and witnesses saw him break into the business. police found him inside a store and now he's at the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. in prince george's county police are trying to figure out if reckless driving had anything to do with a crash at accokeek. this happened on indian head highway. we'll have a look at your forecast. stay with us.
