row house. one firefighter is being treated for minor injuries at the hospital. d.c. fire officials say flames started on the roof deck of one row house and then spread to a neighboring house. that fire is under control right now and no one else was hurt but four dogs aadults and two child displaced while they try to figure out why this happened. it's july 1st and new laws in effect. take a look. in maryland minimum wage up from $8.25 to $9.25. the state legislature also passed a new law which requires public schools to have specific education for opioid addiction. and maryland's first respondersing getting a new tax break. the first $15,000 of their retirement income is now exempt from state taxes. now let's turn to my home state commonwealth of

happened in orlando, killed in the bathroom. >> belo killed a doctor and tried to start a fire near nurses' station. six others treated for injuries. police found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. >> thank god this was not an act of terrorism. it was an isolated incident. it appears to be a workplace related matter. that makes it no less tragic or horrible. >> a tragedy where people go to heal. questions remain why and could anything have been done to prevent it. bring you back to the district. d.c. police need your help finding hit-and-run driver. take you to the scene. erie street. a driver hit a cyclist and took off. police have really very little to go off of right now. they don't have a description of the vehicle. that's why officers need

if you saw the crash, give them a call. we're working to figure out just how badly that cyclist got hurt. this morning d.c. police are investigating whether a patrol officer struck a boy and left him. according to the "washington pos post", this happened thursday night in park view neighborhood southwest. the boy 11 years old. his mother tells the post her son was carrying fireworks. said the officer's cruiser struck the back of his bicycle, checked the fireworks, gave it back to him. the bike was damaged but he's expected to be okay. a bizarre murder out of springfield, virginia, a back alley killing that turned into pet store bug. take you to friday morning. fairfax police say this man got into heated argument at am billiards bar. both apparently regulars there. 2:00 a

into alley behind the plaza. that's when they say he stabbed him leaving him to die. moments later he broke into the pet value store. a friend of the victim says a vigil is planned starting at 5:30 tonight at that shopping center. two police agencies are teaming up and fighting back against a group of dirt bikes and atv riders. yeah, this was the seen last weekend in national harbor when 100 riders wove in and out of traffic. same riders seen revving their engines along pennsylvania avenue and northeast. take a look at photos on the screen. d.c. police an prince george's county police say these are the membership who illegally tore through the streets. police need help identifying them. >> the culture of the atv and dirt bike riding folks in

as i said, we'll continue to take it up to 90 degrees today. it will be process. getting warm through the mornings. if you've got plans this morning, again, it is doing to be nice out there. we will be dry. so a few sprinkles trying to get under way this morning. most of this stuff is doing to wait until the afternoon. 92 is where we'll hit, feeling like mid-90s with that humidity out there. radar not showing anything. a few sprinkles out of fredericksburg coming through spotsylvania county at this point. not much. when we get that heat, we build that up and storms start popping off. by 1:00 p.m. scattered showers and thunderstorms rolling across the region. by 7:00 they are right on out of here. then we're looking good for sunday into monday. tuesday i'm going to keep a chance of isolated showers and storms sunday, monday, and tuesday. but again, highly isolated. most of us are going to remain on the dry side. not a shabby looking fourth, noaa shabby looking holiday weekend. if we do get storms today,

a funeral service will get under way for a football copy and teacher killed on the beltway. leonard schultz taught at james madison elementary school in vienna. schultz was killed as he tried to secure a boat to the back of a pickup truck on the side of the road last saturday. his nephew was critically hurt. beginning at 10:00 a.m. at vienna presbyterian church. this morning there's a new virginia law in effect to protect your kids. this was sparked by an investigation by news 4 iteam, their way of working for you. the law requires all school districts in the commonwealth to immediately and thoroughly investigate any teacher suspected of engaging in misconduct with children. and it requires a prompt formal hearing for those teachers. last winter the iteam found fairfax county waited years before ensuring some teaching licenses revoked from educator wh

one of those teachers later found another job out of state and assaulted another student. there's a fascinating back story to all of this. can you find all of the iteam's previous reports on this case by opening up nbc washington app. a family thought they would spend the summer celebrating their daughter's high school graduation but instead they are watching their daughter's killer go to jail for a deadly fight over a cell phone. >> i'm very, very sorry that someone had to die for this. >> remorse from the fame of 18-year-old kyla jones. she was sentenced to six years in prison for fatally stabbing her last year. add ref the court moments before she was carried away to prison. >> her sentiment and what she expressed to the mother of the decedent was so heartfelt, she wished she could take it back. in that moment of heated

>> police say jones got into a fight with minor on a metrobus just as she was leaving coolidge high school. it was over a cell phone and spilled out into the streets. police say jones pulled out a knife stabbing miner once before taking her cell phone back and leaving the scene. they had a history of fighting. jones tearfully told the judge she never intended on killing anyone. >> she's going to do all she can to fulfill what the other young lady is not able to fill. >> but miner's family is angry. they walked out of court feeling as though six years in prison wasn't enough, and that justice wasn't serve. her mother said, quote, she killed my daughter and got away with it. there's no words that will bring miner back but jones seemingly did what she could to describe her sorrow. >> from her heart she cried out to the family to

i'm going to show you the child who passed is going to be part of me. >> at 6:35, it was brand-new near opening. now demolition crews are tearing down what's left of an apartment building in college park. the complex along purpose house road was under construction when it went up in flames back in april. it was the largest firefighting effort in prince george's county history. more than 200 firefighters had to respond to that. can you see why. it's massive. we still don't know what caused it but we do know there are plans to rebuild it. staying safe this holiday weekend. the added security measures and big change you'll notice on the chal mall. no more warnings. starting today, you could get a ticket in the mail. we're going to show you where

. tennis star venus williams could be heading to court after a deadly crash in florida. the family of an elderly man who died is suing williams. it comes a day after a police report revealed she was at fault for the crash last month. police investigators say williams crossed in front of the other car which had a green light. she has said she did not see the car before crossing into its lane. she has not been charged or cited in the crash. this morning nevada residents, part of the growing group that is able to sell recreational marijuana. voters approving legislation in november making it the fastest turn around from ballot box to sales. people older than 21 can bay up to an ounce of pot. they have to keep it under the radar. smoking pot remains illegal in public places. people can only use marijuana in a private home. passengers traveling in and out of the airport got a late start
