big fireworks and music to celebrate the country's 241st birthday. ♪ ♪ >> the rain stayed away at least from our national mall today. not everybody was so lucky. but most of us dodged the worst of the weather. emelia draper will have in a bit. first start on the mall with news 4, shamari stone. lived up to the hype. >> reporter: good evening. a lot of people out here. thousands upon thousand of people. they were concerned they would possibly rain. the good news, it did not. there were some people who waited four to five hours just to have a good spot to watch the fireworks. and they tell me it was well worth it. it was fantastic. a displae we are happy. >> bright lights. colors over the national mall. the third year in a row for the

like no one was watching. the fourth of july celebration was held on the football field at george mason high school. the simple old-fashioned fun. right done to hand spun cotton candy. real deal, created a climate where strangers exchanged smiles and kids, put down their cell phones. >> no phones. no ipads. >> fun. refreshing. and i love coming together as a community. and, they just get to run around and do what kids do. >> it wasn't the big show on the national mall. as families grow increasingly pressed and stressed by work and other commitments, a day off together to celebrate independence day. priceless. >> it's great. it is, this is wonderful to have, the family together. yes. be able to -- to, you know, have -- that moment. without the electronics. >> local fireworks displays grow in popularity every year. this

individually here, that townhouse going up in flames in gaithersburg last night. investigators believe the homeowner used charcoal in a propane grill, sparked a fire to the home's vinyl siding and flames jumped to a neighboring house. the blaze displaced 11 people. the homeowner using the grill suffered minor burns. >> d.c. police seized illegal fireworks sold to children. police chief peter newsham tweeted. what officers confiscated. on jecherson street. northwest. few blocks from georgia avenue. the bust happened thanks to a community tip. >> still no word who was behind the wheel of an suv, hit by a train in prince george's county this morning. the man was killed. when a csx train hit his vehicle here in beltsville. this was around 3:40 in the morning along baltimore avenue. police tell us the

able to attend. days after the shooting, we saw her throw out the first pitch at the congressional women's softball game. from her wheelchair. she is still recovering from a gunshot to the ankle. >> warning from the cdc, not to let our guard down when fighting zika viperous. women who are pregnant or planning to big pregnant. the virus isn't making headlines like last year at this time. families need to take precautions. nbc's kerry sanders reports. >> reporter: ever since she discovered she was pregnant. doctor visits include routine tests for zika, the mosquito borne virus that can lead to birth defects. >> since the crisis last year, nearly 2,000 pregnant women have been diagnosed in the

80 babies born. in florida, 300 locally acquired zika cases. >> on the front line. boots on the ground. >> you know somebody who got zika? >> yes. >> there had been 17 employees. now a budget for 59. so far, no zika found. the only u.s. area with a travel warning. brownsville, texas. the mosquitoes that can carry zika are in more counties than previously expected. the warning for those pregnant. use repellent. wear long sleeves and avoid travel overseas. where zika is waning but still a threat. >> we expect transmission lower. the risk is still there. >> even with all of this effort. mosquitoes are not the only way zika spreads. the virus can be transmitted sexually. >> until there is vaccinations, it is going to be something that is very hard to prevent. >> most at risk with

unborn children. their mothers now taking all precautions. kerry sanders, nbc news, miami beach. beware of bears in fairfax county. we had a second sighting in just the past few days. this one in the city of fairfax. near darby and linden streets. the black bear did not appear aggressive. still a bear. so if you see it. stay away. likely looking for foods. keep your garbage out of sight or secured. if you see's bear, bring your pets indoors. bear was spotted in the backyard not far away in fairfax station last friday. the family recorded this video as it ate the food out of their bird feeder. bird/bear, difference of 400, 500 pound there. >> yes, hungry. and probably hot about now. >> yeah. >> little cranky too. >> like the rest of us.
