officer and took off then spent hours hiding until deputies tracked him down. officials say 27-year-old marlo mendez is no stranger to the deportation process. we have learned through court documents he has been removed from the country five times dating back to 2007. our northern virginia reporter david culver is live outside federal court. this particular case is raising an awful lot of questions. >> reporter: a lot of questions. i was going through the facebook page and a lot of you at home are asking the question how. how does somebody have so many run ins with the law get deported five times back to el salvador and then get back in? it's a question we have been asking all day. let's take you back to the start of this case. chopper 4 above, below federal

agents. loudoun county sheriff's deputies and state police officers trying to track down this man. he had been arrested for allegedly being drunk in public. he faces local assault and battery charges. federal officials say he was in the country undocumented. as immigration officers take him to louden court documents say he complained about handcuffs being too fight. one officer pulled over and loosened them but says marlo mendez hit him and took off. we learned he had been deported five times before. >> people have been deported a number of times from the united states previously. five is a lot, but it's certainly not unprecedented. >> reporter: with the center for immigration studies. they support stricter immigration laws. >> like any crime you can't make it -- if the border is hard to cross, if illegal immigration is not widely t

authorities in maryland were cracking down on illegal fireworks. this photo is a truck load of fireworks found near cambridge. we are told that is about $8,000 worth of explosives. in the district you could see a lot of illegal fireworks going off throughout the night. police say a community tip led them to illegal fireworks. confiscated these just a few blocks off of georgia avenue. one of the main reasons for crack downs is keeping people safe. a teenager in prince george's has severe injuries and may even end up losing his hand from playing with fireworks. this happened last night in district heights. we have learned this wasn't the only fireworks-related injury in our area. we are joined live from the fire station in district heights. >> reporter:

marshall tells us they had at least four fireworks related injuries across the state. that includes the district heights incident involving a young teen. in that case investigators tell us the boy received severe injuries to his face, torso and it is possible he could lose his hand. it's the warning that you have likely heard before. fireworks aren't only illegal in the state of maryland, they are extremely dangerous. it seems not everyone gets the message around this time of year. >> anything that explodes or goes up in the air is illegal in maryland. typically we see the increase of injuries as a result of fireworks. >> reporter: the fire marshall says so far at least four injuries called in. >> traumatic hand injury where individuals had to be taken to the hand center. >> reporter: one of the

the national parks service wants your input about a proposed desert storm war memorial. it is holding public hearing. two gulf war veterans are leading this campaign for that memorial. a design for the memorial includes a 150 foot wall and includes names of veterans who lost their lives in the battle. funding for the monument has started and construction is estimated to cost about $25 million. it's going to take two to three million dollars to overhaul the elevator system inside the washington monument. that monument has been closed since last august because of this. today we have learned the national parks service has put the contract out to bid for a new system. it hopes to secure a new contract by this august. that elevator has been broken down frequently over the past few years. >> broken more than it is working. a police officer shot and killed in what officials

the 25g9 rr amendment is something that may have popped up. local lawmaker is pushing legislation related to that. chris lawrence is live in the news room. >> some have started bringing up 25th amendment since president trump put out a number of controversial tweets. it's the part of the constitution that deals with removing the president from office section four allows the vice president to become acting president with the consent among majority of cabinet members and then two-thirds of both the house and senate. a maryland congressman wants to use it in case president trump needs to be permanently removed from office. the bill was introduced to make it easier to examine the president's mental state.

fired what pentagon officials have determined is an intercontinental ballistic missile with the capability of possibly reaching the united states at some point in the future. what we saw the swift rebuke from this administration. u.n. ambassador convening an emergency meeting at the u.n. warning china if it doesn't intervene that the u.s. may start a trade war. president trump expected to take a tough tone with the leaders of china, south korea and japan when he meets with them at the g-20 summit this week. this comes after president trump has really reached out to china particularly in the early day of his administration, tries to get china on board with putting pressure on north korea to stop its nuclear program. you will remember that president trump hosted the president of china in april. he has had a series of phone calls with him. there was measured optimism within the administration that president ping might take

haven't done enough. the president tweeting that he is starting to lose hope saying trade between china and north korea grew. so much for china working with us but we had to give it a try. the implication is that he is at his tail end of losing hope here. you will see the president take a very tough stance when it comes to china. his options are limited. sanctions are a possibility. i am told that military action is still a last resort. this is a critical test for this president. >> certainly is. let's turn now to what will likely be the most watched handshake in recent years. do you have indication from your sources what mr. trump will and what he won't say when he meets putin? >> we don't. that is what is so interesting about this moment. this is going to be a critical test for this president when he meets with russia's president vladimir putin. w

of a fire. chris gordon has more on this feud. >> no one was injured in this fire but there is extensive property damage. the fire department did a good job putting it out but right after that here out in front a heated argument broke out between a career officer and a volunteer firefighter that has sparked two separate investigations, one by the fire department, the other by police. >> reporter: cell phone videos taken by neighbors show prince george's county career and volunteer firefighters working together to put out this smoky blaze sunday afternoon. afterward a volunteer firefighter complained that a career officer allegedly assaulted him during an argument. a neighbor across the street who doesn't want to be identified told me she noticed something strange. notice any arnt

there is tantalizing new evidence about the long ago disappearance of famous aviator amelia earhart. amelia earhart and her plane vanished. she is thought to have crashed and died in the pacific ocean. now 80 years later a photograph buried in the u.s. archives may be a clue that earhart survived that crash.
