>> this is, essentially, a sentence that will result in the shooter in this case mr. -- and overseas today, wild protests at the g 20 summit, police unleash pepper spray and water cannons, as anticapitalist groups take to the street. storm team 4 is tracking some rain moving into our area and it could effect your commute this evening. but first our top story tonight at 5:00. the crimes brought back memories of the dc sniper case. we learned the man who committed them will die in jail. hello everybody, i'm jim. >> and i'm wendy. today he was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in montgomery county. he went on a two-day shooting spree across our area last year. he

including his wife and he wounded three others. news 4 dorsey spencer was in the courtroom along with family members who lost their loved ones. this was one of the shootings that happened at montgomery mall, as well, darcy. >> >> reporter: there was a lot of emotion today as you can imagine inside the courtroom when the judge handed down those maximum sentences, some of the victim families were crying. they were hugging, as well, knowing, as you said, this man will spend the rest of his life behind bars. his defense attorney went to great lengths to describe him as a good man who did a lot of things before those two days before he committed the crimes. prosecutors took exception to that, saying these crimes took a lot of planning. a 64-year-old former federal officer with a high security clearance turned vicious killer, described as smiling as he pulled the trigger, killing malcolm at montgomery mall and wounding two others, that

him from carjacking a woman. killing a 65-year-old nursing aide. she was an immigrant who worked long hours to provide for her family. he shot her at the giant in aspen hill. for these crimes, a judge sentenced him to four consecutive life terms, one of them with no parole. >> this is, essentially, a sentence that will result in the shooter, in this case, he'll die in jail. he will never walk the streets again. >> reporter: his attorney painted a picture of a good man who had two bad days, starting when he killed his wife. she said his downward started when his wife filed a restra restraining order against him. the wife pleaded for a long sent and the daughter told him he didn't deserve to ever get out of prison. the judge says his crime showed selfishness. >> he was planning and plotting what happened. his actual crimes took two days to accomplish, however,

planned, i think, and prepared for this for weeks if not months. so this was not two bad days in the life of a man. >> reporter: now, he was provided an opportunity to say something in court today at his sentence and say something to these families, he chose not to. through his legal team, he did express his regrets for these crimes. as he was walking away to the lock up area, i could see in his hand right behind his back he was clutching a small bible. reporting live from rockdale, darcy spencer, news 4. this is located in far western maryland and moving towards the southeast, a lot of lightning and heavy rain fall. no severe thunderstorm warnings with this line right now. as it passes over the mountains it will weaken. it's not traveling all that fast. at about 30 to 35 miles an hour. so we still have a few hours of dry time and some of us may not see rain tonight. i want to

this is going to be tricky, again, as it passes over the mountains it will likely slow down a little bit. based on the latest information as all else remains, moving into the area right around 8:00 p.m. and then if it holds together hitting fredericksburg at about 9:40, only a chance we see some showers here in the dc metro area tonight. 90 degrees right now. scattered showers will be later closer to 9:00, 10:00, and even 11:00. jim, i'll have the latest forecast for the weekend coming up in a little bit. >> we'll see you then. thank you. a former taeeacher's aide pleaded guilty to federal charges of child pornography. now he wants his state charges dropped. our news partner at wtop first reported this case. deon tae caraway saying he did not received a kwat representation and his rights have been violated.

he had to say and reaction from that judge. >> reporter: in a letter written directly to prince georges county judge, he says i feel that my lawyer is not representing me in my best interest. he goes on to say, his right to a speedy trial has been violated and writes i have not signed any sort of paper waiving his right to a speedy trail. he says these are grounds for allstate charges against him to be dropped. he's looking at spending 100 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty in federal court in forcing a dozen children to participate in child pornography. the abuse began in 2015 and continued for more than a year in his later dated june 12th. he said he has not heard from his attorney in over a year. he's represented by the public defender's officer. a request for comment has not been returned by the public defender's office. in his letter, he goes on to tell the judge, my family will be reaching out to the

my concerns are not addressed. this is not to be taken as a threat. judge beverly wood ard saying the court will address all of the concerns during its next hearing and reminded him that he did, indeed, sign a waiver to speedy trial. news 4 obtained the signed waiver from the court file. >> this is a community center where he allegedly abused a number of his victims while he was directing a choir here. we talked with a mother whose son was a part of that choir and a victim. she called it, bold. now, he has a federal sentencing coming up in august. after that prince georges is going to set his date for his trial here. >> the case against the man who escaped the custody of immigration officials on monday, will go before grand jury. mendez complained his handcuffs were too tight while he was being transported. as the officer was loosening

off. he hid in the woods for hours. he's been reported five times. he'll be held in custody there's an immigration detainer against him. so you have to fire through barricade in the middle of the street here. behind us there are police advancing, again, we've -- >> nbc simmons in germany today as protest, once again, turned violent at the start of the g 20 summit. demonstrators and rioters setting big fires and chanting as officers moved in with tier gas and water cannon. >> inside that summit after months of anticipation, president trump had his first one on one meeting with vladimir putin, a meeting that went on much longer than first anticipated. jay gray is live in hamburg

us. jay. >> reporter: quite a day for them. you're absolutely right. the russian president vladimir putin extending their bilateral conference, more than doubling than what most thought the time they would spend together. while they're in that meeting, or outside, violence on the streets here in hamburg. it continues to spill over into the evening here. there are areas and pockets of this city where protesters continue to really wreak havoc on some of the commitment there or some of the cars. this is not one of them, you can see the police vans here. there are officers on the grounds here, as well. every member is inside the concert hall just along the water. >> president putin and i have been discussing various things and i think it's going very well. we've had some very very good

presidents scheduled to last 30 to 45 minutes stretched for more than two hours today. according to rex tillerson, lengthy conversations about russian interappearance and the 2016 presidential election. the president repeatedly pushing mr. putin on the issue while he denied any involvement. tillerson outlined the exchange during an audio briefing after the meeting. >> he pressed them and, you know, felt like at this point, let's talk about how do we go forward. >> next, tillerson, who was part of his briefing russian counter park. the leaders turn their attention to syria, ultimately agreeing to the cease far and u.s. supported rebel fighters in the civil war there. following the extended bilateral session, they joined the rest of the g 20 delegation for a

art concert venue. while a very different tune echoed outside on the streets of the city. protesters, again, clashing with police, helping officers with rocks, bottles and fireworks, torching cars and barricades. security forces responding with water cannon, pepper spray and tier gas. in skirmishes that have become just as much a part of this as a meeting. start on them, we've got ten seconds. >> and we want to give you a look as we move over here to a group of protesters on bicycles, just a peaceful protest that's been circling the city and moving by this concrete cost hundreds of bicyclers that have been doing this all day, chanting at time, ringing their bells. it's part of the protest that continues here in the evening. for the delegates, looks

. the family of southeast drgs c man is heart broken tonight and asking for help to find the person who hit him with a car. burgess johnson was on his bicycle last week when it happened. he's still in the hospital on life support and isn't getting any better. news 4 kristin wright is live for us at the intersection where johnson was struck in southeast. kristin, you spoke to johnson's sister today. how is the family coping now? >> reporter: yeah, this is really tough for the family. a few of the neighbors have come out asking us how this man is

burgess johnson was riding his bike right here. we believe these are the markings from the police investigation. now, johnson's family says he is in very bad shape, but that knowing who did this might help give them some closure. >> someone to leave a person in a street to die. >> reporter: valerie logan is heart broken to see her brother on life support. >> my brother was there laying in the bed with everything hooked to him to keep him alive. >> reporter: someone hit johnson on his bike at the intersection of 29th and eerie in southeast dc last friday around 6:00 p.m. the driver kept going. police are looking for a light colored car, partial plate md

and passenger mirror. even the smallest bit of information might make a difference. >> this happened to be taken out the trash or, you know, just heard the noise and looked out there and saw something, anything, anything, you know. that will help. it will help us, a lot. >> reporter: johnson had four siblings and a big family struggling to understand this tragedy. >> he took a very loving person. burgess is the type of man who would give his heart. >> reporter: brother always looked out for family and friends. he loved to cook and ride his bike. >> i believe in god. and i know that if nobody knows who done it, the person who did it and god. that, i do know.

had a field day with this one, including one of the players. leon harris in the storm center. social media was lighting up. >> not the team, not the players, we're talking about the organization because of all of this. it's back to about 24 hours ago. we had storms that were going through the area. we had flooding, in fact, in the newscast we had shots of one water rescue. lots of stuff going on so the nats organization started to go ahead and postpone the 7:05 game. the first pitch didn't come down to about 10:10 p.m. because you couple that along with the fact that it's a weeknight, metro will shutdown around 11:30, they were stuck in a bad situation there and twitter went nuts. one fan tweeted telling him he had plan to go out and use the carpet to slip and slide. but he replied, you can't, because

>> it only happened about 15 minutes, that's what happened. the reporter from the atlanta journal constitution posted this photo telling people to back down the hatches and stay in their homes before pointing out and was not a single drop of rain. the nats released a statement apologizing for the inconvenience calling it a difficult situation. they say they worked the unions to make the call on whether or not they'll postpone a gail and amelia, you were hear with us yesterday right about this time saying there were heavy storms in the area. they were probably listening to you. that's the reason why they did it. >> thank you. thank you. i appreciate that. >> take you back to 24 hours ago. >> i had the radar pulled up to about 7:00 p.m. now, there was a very strong severe thunderstorm that even potentially produced a tornado as it moved into the fredericksburg area. it was three miles away from the district. i circled that heaviest rain that was back around the area. at that time, you were tracking t.

drug today for patients age five and older who have sickle cell disease. it's one of only two drugs aproved to treat the blood disorder. it's going to be taken in powder form. it will be used to reduce this severe complications of sickle cell. sickle cell diseases and inherited blood disorder, it effects about 100,000 people in this country, particularly, african-americans, latinos and other minority groups. sickle cell got its name which are l shape. the disease can be painful. it can restrict the blood flow to organs causing damage and it can also cause complications that can be deadly. you may remember that rap star prodigy, just 42 years old and one half of the group mob deep battled sickle cell anemia

we see some of that. >> in some areas, some of us i think are going to stay dry. yes, i feel like the weather like 24 hours, take a look at storm team 4 radar tracking the thunderstorms back in far western maryland. these are moving towards the southeast. i really like this track. this is kind of the lining up if you're in between those lines, you should anticipate rain tonight. this is mainly an event from northern virginia, no severe thunderstorm warnings with this line right now. as they pass over the

they will fizzle out somewhat, i think there's heavy rain and lots of lightning. i'm not talking until about 7:00, around the i-81 corridor and areas off to the east more towards the 8:00, 9:00 hour. only chance for scattered storms this evening. i think the nationals game tonight for the most part should be just fine. i want to give you some timing based on the latest information, moving in to petersburg at about 6:30 right around 8:00. i'll continue to keep an eye on this, but here is future weather you can see, 7:30, wants to bring a line of rain, kind of a long and east of 95 not being the case. whe here is what i am seeing, especially northern virginia by 11:00 p.m., those showers moving off towards the eastern shore. tomorrow our weekend is tonight. plenty of sunshine throughout the day. mostly sunny skies, morning, and sometimes a little bit more cloudiness around for th

stadiums and baseball stadiums everywhere. >> so much potential, there are so many stations out there. maryland's first medical marijuana dispensary is taking orders nearly five years after the state voted to legalize it. for patients who have been waiting all that time for treatment, the wait will go on a bit longer. chris gordon explains from frederick. >> reporter: the frederick county sheriff showed up unannounced. he says he was never officially notified that maryland's first medical marijuana dispensary was open here, now. >> you know, i don't agree with it. you know, my thoughts aside, it's going to happen and it's going to be here. we're concerned about security aspects, about traffic coming to and from that facility. >> they say it's run like a medical office. patients first have to medical with the cannabis -- they have to -- in instead of prescription, they're giving a

recommendation. >> and that recommendation in effect says, some people some of the time have received some benefit from medical cannabis for symptoms similar to yours. >> reporter: he thinks medical marijuana could help him. >> i suffer from a disease. normal medications don't help my pain, but the marijuana does. it helps ease that pain, greatly. >> reporter: patients are now preregistering so they will be the first in line to be able to order the legal cannabis. once the first crop is delivered, which should be around labor day. reporting from frederick maryland, chris gordon, news 4. earlier this week we brought you a story about treats to help dogs stay calm in stressful situations, such as fireworks. in that story we erroneous

implied that's the equivalent from the marijuana. they're derived from industrial and don't contain the properties found in marijuana, we reget the error. funeral services were held today just outside of baltimore for a sailor who was killed in last month's collision that -- one of seven who died when the uss fitzgerald collided with a container ship just off the coast of japan. those who gathered in the town this morning called him a beautiful young man. the navy, the coast guard and a number of other agencies are still trying to figure out what led to that deadly collision. >> news 4 is working with the community with word of an expanded service to help homeless people get back on their feet. leon harris is in the newsroom with that story for us, tonight. >> leon. you know, for years the center has been helping folks who are homeless and down on their luck in their lives. now the center is offering a critical service to help those clients get back

two years ago, dc firefighter kevin mccray died saving lives at an apartment fire at a neighborhood in northwest dc. eight years before that, his cousin james also a firefighter died on the job, as well. well, now there's another mccray carrying on the family legacy. mccray is kevin's son, just graduated from fire fighting school today. news 4 amy choe with his story. >> all about answering the

times throughout the day tomorrow, really nice day. maybe an isolated shower in southern maryland, for most of us it's completely dry, looking great for the nationals game. 89 degrees on saturday as you look to sunday. plenty of sunshine in the forecast, extremely low humidity, very unusual for early june, a gorgeous day, 86 for a high temperature on sunday. as we talk about the mugginess and we look to saturday, again, just a little bit humid out there, i'm kind of splitting hairs here. on sunday it is extremely comfortable outside, just amazing. and then monday, we hit 90 degrees and humidity levels for the most part still in check. take a look at your ten-day forecast, again, tomorrow high temperature of 89 degrees, sunday we'll have highs in the mid-80s, great weekend, we start the work week and we're talking about a bit of a heat wave on monday, high temperature, guys, around 90 degrees, maybe an isolated late day thunderstorm on sunday, pop up thunderstorm that not everybody, you can see
