police found the baby. derrick, an awful story, what are we learning tonight from police? >> reporter: well, we know this is still under investigation and there are a lot of circumstances yet to be vetted by montgomery county police, but here's what we do know. we have video of the parking lot of motel 6 where police were called at 10:30 this morning. they found a child, a 4-month-old girl in a van that was in the parking lot. i talked to folks in the area who say this this family, a man, a woman and the baby and the small dog had been seen in the area. they may have been sleeping in that van in the parking lot, but the call that got police out here was for an unresponsive child. they found the 4-year-old girl who was not breathing. she was taken to shady grove hospital and subsequently pronounced dead. police do not have the cause of death and it's pending the outcome of an autopsy

likely be done at some point in the coming week, perhaps even tomorrow. again, this is a very tragic story and it does have people a bit shaken around here, because as i said, people had become somewhat familiar with this family who were apparently living in a van on the property of this motel 6 and that's where montgomery county police were called early this morning when they found an unresponsive toddler and the 4-year-old girl found dead. no principals involved at this point. derrick ward, news 4. back to you. >> thank you. several adults and children are now displaced after an early-morning fire in southeast and fire officials now say it was arson and a neighbor across the street took this video as flames engulfed this house on wheeler road. the people who were inside tell news 4's darcy spencer they feel blessed they were able to make it out alive. >> reporter:

the roof on wheeler road destroying one house and forcing out kadija turner and the neighbors in the connecting home. >> it moved over to my house, and i just ran back in the house to get my kids and my grandkids out. >> fortunately, everyone got out safely. sources tell news 4, they may have used an accelerant on the front porch and set the house on fire in what's being called a possible domestic situation. >> anton green took this incredible video from across the street. >> extremely high flames off the top of the house and it was uncontrollable. >> i'm just glad they got out. >> a woman who did not want to the go on camera said when she looked out her house she saw the neighbor's home on fire. she banged on the door making

>> turner walks through what's left of her home. she was here with her family including two infants. they were sleeping in these rooms when the fire broke out about 3:00 in the morning. volunteers gathered items for the family and hauled them to a storage facility. the red cross is also assisting with temporary needs and housing. >> they can get another house, but it's the family and everybody came out safe. so thank god for that. >> in the district, darcy spencer, news 4. new tonight, a witness tells prince georges county police navar beverly said i told you i would do it. he's accused of killing his stepfather and then posting a selfie with the body on social media. officers arrested beverly yesterday shortly after first responders found the body. relatives say police had been to the house for violence between beverly and his stepfather. we are following a developing story near ohio.

people hurt after a shooting at a party. that party being thrown by a pregnant woman ready to reveal her baby's gender. police say that mom-to-be and three children were among the wounded. the youngest victim, just 2 years old. that shooting happened late last night and it has left the community rattled. >> i would like nothing more in my position than to be able to stand up here and tell the community they have nothing to worry about, but i will not provide statements and information that is false to make people feel better and we don't know why they did this. >> about a dozen people were watching when the gunmen burst into the home and we are told they have not been able to locate them. the cincinnati enquirer is reporting that the host told her guests she was having a baby boy right before the shooting happened. president trump is back at the white house after his overseas trip and his face to face with russian president vladimir putin. he tweeted

scary pictures into our newsroom. five people had to go to the hospital today after their ride-on bus got into a crash. we are told the driver slammed into a telephone pole on western avenue near the chevy chase circle in montgomery count pep first responders say nobody was seriously hurt. now they're investigating why the bus crashed. the opioid epidemic is a serious problem in this country. the cdc says prescriptions for opioid painkillers had tripled since 1999 and that's making the epidemic worse. today, thousands of people

gathered at the gaylord national resort and convention center to talk about solutions. all of these people help run drug courts throughout the country. drug court is a type of treatment program that can be an alternative to jail. some people at today's conference were once drug addicts themselves. >> i got hit hard into drugs and oxycontin and different things like that and it led me down a line of nothing, but despair. drug court helped me realize that my life was more valuable than a pill and it gave me a chance to get my life back together and know that i don't want to do two to 20 years in prison over an oxycontin. >> the drug court program lasts for about a year and it includes classes, community service and regular drug tests. the program serves about 150,000 people a year. about three-quarter stay out of jail for at least two years after they finish that program.

republican lawmakers say that they're going to introduce a bill that would grant charlie and his parents permanent residence in america so that they can come here for experimental treatments. nbc's joe friar is in london with the story. >> the parents of charlie gard appeared in a rally today outside of a london hospital where the boy is on life support. charlie is still fighting so they'll keep fighting. >> there's nothing to lose, and he deserves a chance. >> reporter: the 11-month-old boy has a rare genetic condition. he can't move his arms or legs or breathe without help and doctors say he should be taken off life support and his parents want to take him to america for experimental therapy. >> we want to take our son to a hospital where they do specialties there and it's a fantastic hospital and unfortunately, they're not specialists in charlie's condition. the specialists are in america where they want to the go. >> courts rule in favor of the

international response and the pope has expressed support for charlie's family and president trump tweeted that if the u.s. could help it would be delighteded to do so. after two hospital outside of the uk offered to give charlie experimental therapy, now giving the boy's parents new hope. today they joined the supporters as they presented to the hospital a petition of more than 350,000 signatures. >> joe friar, nbc news, london. now to northern virginia, where it appears that somebody set part of a local elementary school on fire. somebody scandalized white oaks elementary school last sunday night. the building has been under construction. fire officials say work crews found damage in and out of the school and in a playground that was just put in. >> all right. storm team 4

sherry is joining us now. the nats having a great day, but can we be honest, anything is better than yesterday. >> you don't really -- anyway, the nationals. they bounced right back after being shut out for the first time this season and today was the series finale against the braves and for the first half of the season and we are happy to report, with 6 2/3 innings successfully. also successful today, bryce harper who got his jersey for tuesday's mid-summer classic. anthony rendon was close to being an all-star. and the nats are up 1-0 and he takes his pitch to right center and wilmer come in to score and the nats take a 3-0 lead. there's something about joe ross and that run support and in the top of the third he gave the three runs back. no surprise off the bat of

killer and eighth rbi and this series and the braves tied at three and it got worse for ross and he leads the game and the next inning with tenderness and speaking of injury, chris returning this week from bicep rupture and, and almost all of this when he goes right there off the wall. rendone scores to give the nats a 4-3 lead and now time for the all-star break and carol maloney caught up with the guys before they headed out. >> 88 games, the first half is in the books. nats win 52 games and that ties it for second most in team history before the all-star break, today ending on a high note and the guys say that's great to give him a chance to reflect on all of the good things they've done this season so far. >> as a lineup, i think we've done a great job
