we'll start with these new controversies this morning starting with donald trump and his son. peter alexander is at the white house this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump facing fierce new criticism in the wake of his meeting with vad pult there are new indications this morning that some within his campaign, including his oldest son donald trump junior were at least willing to accept damaging information about hillary clinton from a russian lawyer tied to the kremlin. >> this morning revealing new details about why the president's son, son-in-law and his then campaign chairman met privately in trump tower with a russian lawyer. as first reported by "new york times," donald trump junior now promise acknowledge easy was promised information that might be helpful to his father's campaign before agreeing to the meeting just before he clinched the election. ey

suggested the meeting where he was told that will, quote, individuals connected to russia were funding the democrat national committee and supporting ms. clinton. but trump junior further states that the comments were vague ambiguous, and played no sense and that had that she had no meaningful information. trump junior says she did talk about russian adoptions. the president's and so his outside legal counsel say donald trump had no knowledge of the meeting. back at the white house after the g-20 summit where at one point his daughter evanka filled in for him at the main table stirring controversy, he is now coming under fire for his new relationship with vladimir putin, i strongly pressed putin twice about meddling in our election. he vehemently denied if the i've already given my opinion. his chief of staff tried to strengthen the point. >> the president did not believe the denial of president putin

it's unprecedented. >> this idea that they didn't think that the meeting itself may have been campaign-related, you would have paul manafort wrour have donald trump junior together with this attorney in a room, does that -- does that smell right to you? >> no, it doesn't. the meeting was billed by donald junior to his colleagues on the campaign, the campaign chairman and the son-in-law as a way to work with the russian government operative to affect the outcome wft 2016 election. this is in effect is what everybody has been looking for if the this demonstrates a narrative i think it's also potential lin -- potentially incriminating. >> now we have conflicting stories about how hard the president pressed him and the russians say one thing and now secretary of state rex tillerson said apparently he didn't think the president had pushed him all that hard on the election meddling. >> well, the secretary of state's narrative was that the president chikd the box, that he

have to raise this issue so i will. now the president's trying to say pressed him hard, but the russians put out a statement saying that the president accepted putin's denial and everybody wants to move on. there's nothing to move on either we think this is a big deal or we don't and it seems like the president missed the opportunity to be push the leader on this. >> there's some oerj conflicts based whoon came out of that. based on what we know, how would you characterize that face-to-face? >> i think was a missed opportunity for the president because he could have pressed him on a number of issues, on ukraine, syria, meddling. the fact they had a good relationship developing outs of that meeting, i don't think that's a win for the united states. >> what about the notion that the u.s. and russia will team up to go after hacking. >> that's laughable. to be working with the culprit is to undermine american interests. thank goodness it appears to be the shortest v

u.s. history. >> thank you. >> it is back to capitol hill today after the holiday break and the healthcare battle will be front and center once again. chris kristin, good morning. >> reporter: we're returning to a harsh reality. hop sigs has grown to the healthcare bill, now a frenzy to try to fix it to get it over the finish line, and the president weighing in this morning in a tweet writing i could not imagine that congress would dare to leave washington without a beautiful new healthcare bill fully approved and ready to go. >> the stakes couldn't be higher this morning as congress returns with one goal, repeal and replace obamacare. this after republicans faced growing outrage from constituents. with protests and tense town halls during the recess, the senate's current plan scaled back many of obamacare's tax credits and ends its medicaid expansion.

office estimates 22 million people could lose coverage. a growing number of republicans have opposed the bill with some openly saying it's going nowhere. >> in my view, it's probably going to be dead. >> majority leader mitch mcconnell pushed back a vote with changes being made to the current draft bill unleash a reality check to his party, pass the bill or work with democrats. >> if my side is unable to agree on an adequate replacement, then some kind of action with regard to private health insurance market must occur. >> but he's now facing pressure from the right and president trump who tweeted, for years even as a civilian i listened as republicans pushed the repeal and replace of basically care. now they finally have their chance. on sunday the president's chief of staff seemed optimistic. >> yes, they will get a repeal and replace bill done, i believe that. >> the president also floating the idea that if the senate can't pass the current bill, they should immediately repeal and then replace at a

but that's the exact opposite of what mr. trump said just a few months ago and some congressional republicans tell nbc news that idea say nonstarter. now the gop is struggling to come up with alternatives. >> senator ted cruz is proposing an amendment that would give insurance companies more flexibility, but that's being kritd sized by those who are saying it could ultimately limit coverage. and senator chuck grassley of iowa unleashing a stern warning to his partners on twitter saying if we haven't passed health reform now, rewon't be ashamd we'll go from majority to minority. >> thank you. lots more going on today including wildfires in california that have forced nearly 8,000 people out of their homes now. the governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency for beaut county that's about 60 miles north of sacramento. at least sten

destroyed and 5,400 have been damaged by flames. it destroyed most a boy scouts camp and killed all of the animals in its nature center. 3,500 people had to be evacuated from that area. a fire damaged london's market. 70 firefighters were called into bottle the flames. there were no immediate reports of injuries or kaushts. the fire did damage three floors and the roof of the building which contains a number of businesses. at this point flor word on just how that fire started. now to the latest on a story we've been following very closely the case of alleged deadly hazing at the penn university. gabe is at the course house force us. good morning. >> reporter: last month's hearing was so emotional that his parents had to leave the courtroom. today we're expect prosecutors to lay out more evidence about a

case in greek life that's being closely watched at campuses around the country. >> this morning penn state fraternity brothers are heading back to court to find out whether they're going back to trial. 18 are charged in connection with the alleged brutal hazing death of 19-year-old beta bait a pi pledge. his devastated parents plan to be in the courtroom again. >> they hope that the death of their son is not in vein and that the death of their son will encourage change. during. >> during the first part of the hearing last month they played gut wrenching surveillance video of him drunk falling head first repeatedly for hours inside the fraternity house in february. it took nearly 12 hours for someone to call 911. >> that is what made the difference. >> yes. >> yeah. >> they killed him. >> now his parents furious at what they call the inappropriate behavior of the defendants in court in june likening it to

reconstruction project that will impact hundreds of thousands of commuters at new york's penn station, noerk north america's largest rail hub. had is where the emergency track repairs are getting under way this morning. more than 1300 trains ran been amtrak, new jersey transit and road and the long island railroad travel on the tracks every day but three to five tracks will be shut down until september 1st forces cancellations. they're urging commuters to switch to subways, bus, ferries for the next new few months. they've also discounted some farestor ease the pain. we are hearing from a teenager who is lucky to be alive. he was sleeping outside his camp in colorado when he was attacked by a plaqblack bear. >> reporter: the tear firing attack happened at this campground while more than 100 children were sleeping. >> i woke to a

>> 19-year-old dylan who asked his last name not be used was ripped by from his sleeping bag by a 400-pound black bear. >> i woke up and the bear many a hold of my head and was dragging me across the ground. >> dillon was sleeping just outside the main cabins at glasier view trarch tranche. the teenager finding himself in a life or death struggle. >> i just started hitting the bear as hard as i could and i found its eye and started poking its eye with mize fingers as hard as i could and temperature dropped me. >> and the attack wasn't over. >> i was laying on my stomach and it reached around and grabbed the side of my face and it pulled me into its mouth, it grabbed me with its teeth right back here. and when it pulled ittor the skin and scraped my skull. >> bear attacks on humans are rare but can be deadly. officials are warning campers to use extreme caution in bear

wildfires spread over 11 states and we've also got critically low humidity levels so a high fire danger, gusty winds spreading these fires plus we've got this huge heat dome that's spread together east. jet stream way toupt north. look at these temperatures today, denver up to 95, kansas city 95, st. louis eight degrees above average at 97 degrees and chicago you'll be at 91 on wentd. st. louis you say in the mid to upper 90s, atlanta will be in the 90s, and that spreads to the east by tomorrow. new york 92 degrees. thurt it will be 90 norfolk stays in the 90, same in washington, charleston and charlotte. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

writing it in more rocco. >> you give a lot of great description. this is the 17th book. >> it is. >> when you first wrote the first one, did you think i've got 16 more of these stories? >> it was supposed to appear in one book and one book only and now here we are at number 17 and just sold it to mgm. we're going to make a television series out of it. >> that was my next question. because i know people wanted a movie, they want tv. you're going to make a tv series. >> i think for me to have the breadth of the material, and these television series we're sort of invent a new form of story telling with ability to drift in and out. so i've given mgm seven teen novels, sort of a piece of music and now they get to play it in a div way. and i'm collaborating with them and working with them and we're talki talking to writers and producers right now. i'm looking forward reinterpreting the material for this v

here's the thing. everyone hears about ticks and we talk about lyme disease. had is not a tick transmitt a disease but it's a tick that transmits an allettergy, i know. the problem suspect that there's no way to necessarily test who's susceptible to developing this allergy, but basically if you've been bitten by this tick, it's called the lone star tick, in a susceptible person, that person eats a piece of meat and will develop a severe allergy to the meat. the thing that makes taye little bit different from a typical allergic reagency is that the symptoms tend to not incur immediately after ingestion but four to six hours later, hives, vomiting, upset stomach. there's no treatment for it but you have to avoid eating meat. in is on the rise and very, very uncommon actually in this country typically in the southeast but it's moving north and moving west so we're compiling more information. >> okay. >> as we speak. >> is it a life-long issue if
