longer shifts. we asked the chief tonight how that's going to help if the victims are all targeted. shomari stone is live with the answer for us. >> reporter: good evening, the police chief says that the add hours will decrease violent crime, because there will be more officers on the streets. now the average officer works eight to ten-hour shifts. well, it's going to increase to 12 hours. there will be more police officers out on the streets, and he says that will cause the people who have these long-standing disputes to think twice about pulling the trigger. >> this is my home. and it troubles me. >> reporter: the police chief wants to clean up his home, prince georges county. he's making it a top priority to reduce the murder rate. officers will target high-crime areas. >> the frequency of which these are desolving into violence and people are getting hurt. >> reporter: last night two men were shot,

a baby caught in the crossfire last night is home from the hospital. and they are promising to catch the shooter. families tell news 4 they thought they were in a safe area and didn't mind their children playing outside. the 1-year-old was in a stroller when a group of men got into an argument and started shooting. prosecutors are expected to rest their case tomorrow in the murder trial of a former parks department employee accused of stabbing a wedding caterer to death. he says it was self-defense. we get caught up tonight from fairfax county court. >> reporter: prosecutors calling it murder, arguing that while working for the fairfax county park authority over the summer, he pulled out a knife, stabbed and killed a beloved wedding caterer. the defense? they have a difference story. they say this was a terrified teen who was threatened and acted in self-defense.

parking is restricted, go to our nbc washington app and search under "investigation." if you get a parking ticket in d.c. you might soon get a break when it comes time to pay up. council member white is proposing a d.c. annual amnesty bill. once a year, anyone with over $1,000 in overdue tickets would be able to pay 60% of that fine to clear their records. white said many working people are overwhelmed with overdue tickets. the council may take up the proposal later this year. now to a pretty amazing story getting lots of attention on our facebook page. more than 70 complete strangers formed a human chain to save a family. that family'd gotten caught in a rip current off the coast of florida on saturday. an 8-year-old boy pulled from the kuncurrent says he hopes he able to help his rescuers some day. >> that's aamazing
