degrees. first at 4 we're working for you. good afternoon i'm pat. >> i'm leon harris. let's get straight to doug hammer in the storm center. >> we are going to be tracking some storms throughout the evening and we are, of course, in red mode here, that's because of the heat for the most part, heat advisely in effect. it's issued when we get a heat index about 105, that's what we have out there right now. we were at 104, 106 last hour, now down to 104, 106 fredericksburg, notice culpep r culpepper, 86 degrees, the reason we had some storms come through. we have a pretty good chance. from looking at this system right here, this system has a little bit of a trailing trough, so to speak, making its way through, a little bit of boundary that's going to come through our region, but right now i'm still tracking a couple of showers. nothing strong to see veer. yo

witness statements, folks who were here with collins on the night of this horrible murder, video evidence was also presented and we have to assume that the cameras here, right outside of the bus stop played a major part. those cameras have a direct view of the bus stop here where collins was killed. you can see that now there is another makeshift memorial that's been put there in his honor. all of this information heavily weighs on the grand jury today. former university of maryland student is charged with first-degree murder and is looking at the possibility of life without parole. richard collins was waiting at a bus stop here in university of maryland with friends when witnesses say approached him and told him to move out of the way. when he refused, he was stabbed. he followed a white supremacy hate group on facebook. the fbi is still investigating whether this was a hate crime. he was not charged with that today. prince georges

frederick maryland, we've learned. that's where his parents still live. today enlisting was something he wanted to do ever since he was a kid. now, they're preparing for the funeral. she spoke with news 4 derrick ward, he's live now with the story. derrick, what a sad sad time for this family. >> reporter: oh, it is, indeed. you can only imagine the grief they're growing through, that's mixed with pride with what he's been doing. he grew up right here in frederick. he graduated in 2002 but he left an impression on those who knew them. take a look, he jiened the marine corps right after high school. his mother tells us that he had gone through nine deployments. people who knew him growing up fully expected that career path. but, you know, what they did not expect was the way it ended. he was among 16 servicemen who died monday when the aircraft they were in went down in a field in mississippi. they were on theiray

coverage right now with chris lawrence who is going to school us a little heat history, chris. >> yeah. pat and leon, i've been working to put today's heat into context for you. look, i know it's blustering outside. but dare i say, it could be worse. and not all that long ago, on july 22nd, 2011, dulles hit 105 degrees, that's just one degree shy of the all-time highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in the dc area. when we factor in the humidity, the heat index soared to 121. that air stayed with us every day for two weeks, topped 90 degrees. now, the folks in arizona, they just call that summer. but even they were suffering a few weeks ago during the worst heat wave in decades. it hit 118 in phoenix and 119 the next day. people were driving their cars with oven mitts on

cancelled dozens of flights because some regional jets can't fly at that temperature. you know, all of that pails in comparison to one day death valley california. this was back in 1913. now, look, some experts will dispute this, but right now the all-time highest temperature on earth is reported in an area called fermix creek, pretty appropriate. so look. why is it so hot there? take a look. it's part of the geography, the area is surrounded by mountains on both sides. it also sits 300 feet below sea level, what do you have, you have all that hot desert air and it's pouring into the desert valley. it turns the creek into convection oven and one day in july, take a look at this, look at this number, one day in july about 100 years --

hundred years ago, they it hit a staggers 134 degrees. as much as we're suffering here in our area today, nowhere near 130. at that temperature, your eyes are going to hurt, electronics that you leave in the car is going to warmth and melt, cameras, cell phone, all that stuff is going to shutdown. folks say even the lightest breeze can feel like a brass. it gets so hot out there, even the meteorologist they can't work, they all called in sick that day. >> we'll take off. that's it for us. >> do we really believe this 134. we'll tell you they're off to school and. >> if it's not 134, it's -- it's pretty close. >> pretty close. >> 129 and 130. >> right. >> and i don't know what difference it makes at that point. >> all feels awful. >> absolutely. highest temperature here at

humidity makes it harder for the air to heat up. because of that, that's why we hit 106. but we have that, we're 105 as you mentioned back in 2011. remember that thing we called the deracio. it was 104 in dc. the strongest storms. yeah, let's take a look and show you what we're dealing with. current temperatures sitting at 994 degrees. -- 94 degrees. it's not just hot, though, it's all about for us, the humidity. 94 dc. 96 in huntington. we did get to 97. take a look at the heat index, though. i think this is a little high. 101 over towards manasasa. look at fredericksburg at 105. that's why much of the area, now, under a heat advisory right on through 8:00 tonight. with that heat index value around 105 that includes everybody

east, including all. we have seen a couple of showers and a couple of storms and not really going on here down to the south. we're looking at a couple of showers, that's about it, though, the wider picture, we've got severe thunderstorm watches new york in philadelphia. nothing in our area, i'm tracking this little system here, this little spin in the atmosphere. we can see a line develop across our region and move through around 7, 8:00, that's something i'm going to be watching very closely. now we don't have a lot going on. i think we can see that later this evening. maybe a couple of storms you see here, they're through by around 9:00, behind this system, well, we get through tomorrow. tomorrow we'll start off sunshine. it's going to be hot tomorrow morning as it was today. around noon, 1:00, no big deal, tomorrow afternoon, i think a pretty good chance of some strong to severe thunderstorms. now, this computer not showing a lot, yeah, we're under a slight risk for

we get some breaking news here at the live desk. they ran across the south lawn pleads guilty to federal charge. i just retweeted the i-team. he sound at the federal courthouse and broke this story on twitter, undetected on white house grounds for more than 15 minutes before officers took him into custody. he reached a 5 footal outer perimeter fence at east executive avenue and he climbed over two more fences. according to court documents, carried two cans of mace. he's facing up to a year in prison and the judge ordered him to stay away from dc and any of president trump's properties. we did try to speak with him after the hearing, but he did not want to comment. at the live desk, lawrence, news 4. thank you for that, chris. all right, you've got to tell me, how lucky did we get to have that backyard barbecue yesterday an

times can we say hot, hot, hot. you know, as long as it stays this way, you know, right on through the weekend, fortunately, that's the thing. tomorrow we'll talk about the heat, too. >> i asked you earlier during our facebook live, whether we hit the hot point of the hottest point of the summer. >> the answer to that is, no, this goes all the way through the second or third week of august and we can hit 100 in september. so that's what we're dealing with out there. today is the hottest day we've seen so far this year. but even in the forecast i had now, i have a couple of days that could get hotter than that. out there, currently, yeah, we're sitting at 94 degrees. winds out of the south at 15 miles an hour. that breeze normally helps a little bit, but not when you've got humidity out there. when you look at the heat index, 105 fredericksburg. 103 for the river. you need to be in a pool, that's about the only way you get some relief. we saw a couple of thunderstorms

now, one loan storm which has just popped up here, if you think about heading out towards the bay bridge. hello, bay bridge, right when you're getting on the bay bridge, isn't it great to cross the bay bridge when you've got a strong storm on you. you can't pull up there and wait for it to pass. a lot of lightning associated with this storm, too. the bay bridge could be a little bit of a problem. as i mention, good chance for better storm tomorrow. we'll see that and then we'll finally see some relief. you could see a couple of storms tonts. i know one person who would love relief. >> i seem to get stuck with it. all right, guys, there's a lot of i want to talk with you about. it is pretty hot. there's the light breeze, over all the humidity, haze, making it feel so much worse, with that in mind, here a few hot topics i want to go over. did you know while heat mayot

deep in a hole that's getting deeper by the minute. authorities have confirmed the remains of one of the four missing men, 19-year-old were found in the grave. police are not yet identifying the other remains. authorities have been calling part of a 90-acre farm owned by the parents of 20-year-old identified as a person of interest in the case. he was arrested wednesday for trying to sell a car belonging to one of the missing men. he's now being held on a $5 million cash bond. i know more than i'm sharing on the relationship and i have to keep it that way to maintain the integrity of the investigation. >> and dean, all went missing nearly a week ago. their mysteriouses appearances appear to be one step closer to be solved. dan, nbc
