what happened. >> reporter: an unusual site in this mclean neighborhood, crime scene tape from a forensics truck in the driveway. even more troubling, the reason they are there. police have identified the two women found dead in the home friday afternoon. 23-year-old helen lorena hargan shot and killed her mother, 63-year-old pamela denise hargan. they say helen then turned the gun on herself. >> oh, my god. i cannot believe it. >> reporter: it's a quiet street here and most people had no inkling anything like this was going on. until they got a call from the police, that reverse 911 call. >> then i get that call, saying, don't go out and stay inside. i said, okay, whats this happening? you know, i was just sort of panicking. >> reporter: indeed, that call led to a lot of uneasiness in this neighborhood. then they saw the

a house that neighbors say the family's been in for maybe a year and a half. other neighbors tell us there was nothing indicating anything was amiss, at least not from the outside, nothing that could lead to a murder-suicide. police say a smaller child, believed to be the granddaughter was not in the home when the shootings happened. it's the fact that the shootings happened, that a daughter would kill her mother and then herself. >> i cannot believe it. it just -- unreal to me. how could you do that? >> reporter: derrick ward, news4. a two-day rally for justice wrapping up tonight. hundreds of protesters marching more than 18 miles from virginia into d.c. yesterday. this morning, many of them met up again on pennsylvania avenue. women's march organizers were behind today's vigil and rally in front of the department of justice. they're protesting the nra, and say lawmakers need to separate themselves from the lobbying grou

the people on the hill who are accepting wads of money from the nra and maybe start to get them a conscience. >> demonstrators say they're particularly upset with the nra's silence in the death of philando castile. he was shot by police in a traffic stop in minneapolis. castille was a registered gun owner who told police he had a weapon in the car before he was arrested. -- before he was shot, excuse me. the nra released a video that criticized protests around the country. today's demonstrators were upset at the video, but the nra stands by it and says that it will not take it down. a water spout spotted on the eastern shore today near the bay bridge. storm team4 meteorologist amelia draper joins us to break down what had a lot of people talking on social media and whether

>> certainly, erka. actually, this video and the image captured by one of our own nbc employees this morning, you can see the water spout there. it was located over stevensville, we're about seven miles southeast of gibson island, moving about 20 miles an hour. typically with water spouts like this, they form over water. they have the biggest impact or the most concern to boaters out there on the water. and they very infrequently make it onto land. if they do, they typically fall apart. but it did cause the national weather service to issue a tornado warning this morning. again, certainly something to see this morning, thankfully, it only lasted for ten minutes and absolutely no damage was reported. now in weather, i'm tracking a big return of heat and i'll have more on that at about 6:18. >> we'll see you then. a scary morning for a man and a

they were trapped upstairs while a fire was burning in their kitchen. first responders rescued them and we're told their injuries are not serious. investigators were back at the house on logan drive this afternoon to learn how that fire started. four young men face charges tonight in a brutal attack. police say two of them got into some kind of a fight with a few other people inside a house on butler street near 15 in southeast d.c. this was back in may. police say when the victims went outside, two other suspects were waiting, according to police. the men held one of the victims and pistol-whipped her. we're told none of the victims were badly hurt. all right, they are here, an all-girls robotics team from afghanistan has arrived at dulles airport. this was overnight. they were met by a special u.s. envoy and the afghan ambassador. the team will take part in a three-day competition that begins tomorrow in d.c. their journey to get here can be measured in m

lot of you have been following. julius, the baby giraffe has died at the maryland zoo. julius was born a month ago today at the zoo in baltimore. but he had trouble nursing and did not develop a strong immune system. despite efforts to boost his health, his condition deteriorates overnight and zoo officials say they made the decision to humanely euthanize him. a group of d.c. volunteers who sign people up to donate bone marrow call themselves the swab mob. the group's official name is sharing america's marrow. people who want to donate bone marrow has to swap their cheeks. the sample goes into a registry to help with finding matches. the group held a swabbing drive at the hamilton crown plaza in northwest this afternoon. it's something they do every month. for some, it's a way to give back. >> some random person on the registry saved my daughter's life. and that's very impta

deadly autoimmune disease called aplastic anemia. she's doing a lot better since the transplant. and the swab mob have registered over 300 people to help save lives. it was pizza, arts and a creative community in prince george's county. today marks the grand opening between art works now and pizzeria para iso. it combines arts, education, social justice, programming and pizza. art works now has been in mt. rainier since 2011. pizza para deeso has been in business for 25 years, but this is the restaurant's first maryland location and it's pretty tasty stuff, if i might add. next to news4 at 6:00, for months, people in one local community were denied access to their library. today, it finally re-opened. and from the looks of things, the improvements were worth the wait.

you're watching news4 at 6:00. it's demolition day for the d.c. police. they destroyed dozens of all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes today. darcy spencer is live at police headquarters to tell us why these vehicles were on t

pile. darcy? >> reporter: d.c. police have been making a big push over the last couple of weeks to get these illegal atvs and other bikes off the streets. this is just the latest piece of that strategy. let's go ahead and show you the video that was released a little bit earlier this afternoon by d.c. police. it shows a huge claw picking up an atv. it then puts it into a compactor and then it's smashed. police say they destroyed 62 atvs and other off-road bikes at a facility in prince george's county today. these are bikes that were seized on the street or were confiscated in criminal investigations. they were unregistered or their owner did not come and claim them. police previously released photos of dozens of men who were caught on video riding on the streets and sidewalks in the district, which is illegal. at the time, the chief said this won't be tolerated. >> this behavior
