couple thunderstorms. keep an eye to the sky. isolated storm chances there. tomorrow is going to be much of the same. then we really get hot. speaking of that commute today, let's check your commute with melissa mollet on this monday. good morning, melissa. >> good morning, sheena. looking at the beltway, everything moved out of the way. beltway is nice and clear now. no other issues to worry about. earlier roadwork we were watching. taking a look at 270 down to the spur, you can see you're speeding there, get there in 26 minutes. same thing if you're headed out of town, northbound on 270 this morning. 66 and 95, don't have any worries there. prince george's county, all of those routes looking quite good as well. pennsylvania avenue, 301, everything is rolling along well. aaron? >> all right. melissa, thank you. 5:01 now. angie goff with scary flooding in arizona. >> angie, what's going on here? >> the flooding of this creek s

turn. take a look. this is a new photo we got of the family that was there vacationing out in this creek. the search is for that man, the father, the 27-year-old man. that's expected to pick up this early morning. after a popular swimming hole was overtaken by floodwaters. this is cell phone video of that. at this point, nine people were killed. many of the people that were pictured, what we first showed you, more than half of those killed are children. this is all happening just north of phoenix. an area expected to be hit hard again by storms today. several were hurt in the flooding. most of those hurt are at the hospital this morning. back to you, eun. >> angie, thank you. it's 5:02. d.c. police are investigating two different crime scenes in two separate parts of the city. one man was shot and the other stabbed. this comes at a time when crime numbers are down in the district. but police are working to

the first incident happened on 9th and d streets in northeast off of maryland avenue around midnight. someone shot a man. police say the man was conscious and breathing when they took him to the hospital. police are looking for four suspects who were in a black toyota suv. about an hour and a half later, a man was stabbed in southeast d.c. this happened on good hope road, not far from ketchum elementary school. the victim was also alert when taken to the hospital. police are also looking for four suspects in this case. it's not clear whether the shooting and the stabbing are related. right now, homeowners living in riverdale heights are on edge after a man died in the middle of the street. prince george's county police say he died from a trauma to the body. a homeowner discovered the body around 4:00 a.m. on sunday on 60th avenue. if you're familiar with the area, it's off riverdale road. it was scary learning someone died on their street.

this in our neighborhood. you know, it's a big surprise to us, you know. >> things like this going on, it doesn't need to be around here because we got kids. >> now, it's not clear if the victim was killed in the area of 60th avenue or dumped there. police say the victim was a hispanic man in his 30s and they're working to identify him. this is the first murder in the county since the police chief announced officers would be working longer shift. the crackdown was announced since 12 men were killed in the first 11 days. we have an update on the nbc washington app. it was a germantown woman killed in an accident in olney yesterday morning. she was killed when two cars collided near fraley farm road. montgomery county police say a 13-year-old girl and two others were taken to the hospital. they are all expected to be okay. police are still

what caused sunday's crash. if you drive the beltway, you may want to hear this before you hop in the car. starting today, maryland will begin to crackdown on anyone who speeds through a work zone. the state has set up automated speed cameras near suitland road and prince george's county. that's where crews are working on a bridge. if you drive 12 mirror more over the posted speed limit, you will get a warning in the mail. then starting august 7th, you will get a $40 ticket. five minutes after the hour now. as soon as today, one of two former capitol hill staffers accused in a nude photo scandal could appear in court. juan mccullum has yet to go before a judge. while doreen brown lewis already pleaded not guilty. he's accused of posting nude photos online. that boss was congresswoman stacey plaskett from the virgin islands.

people on capitol hill over the next couple of days. protesting the senate's health care bill. several groups are planning a multiday people's filibuster rally that starts this afternoon. this comes as the senate is delaying a key vote on the bill until senator john mccain recovers from surgery. the congressional budget office is delaying its analysis of the plan. nbc's chris pallone will have a look at what this means coming up. the white house remains on the defensive this morning, continuing to down play a meeting last year between donald trump jr. and a russian lawyer. president trump once again defended his son on twitter, while the president's personal lawyer went on the sunday shows to say there was nothing illegal about the meeting. virginia senator mark warner says the meeting has brought the russia investigation to the next level. >> all of these efforts to say there was only smoke and there's no fire, well, that's all been put to rest. this is clearly -- brings the investigation to aew

senate intelligence committee wants to speak with donald trump jr. it is just about 5:07. we want to check in with angie goff at the live desk following the path of major wildfires and new challenges today, angie. >> looking ahead to today, it is going to be a tough one for firefighters in canada to get this under control. more than 37,000 fleeing their homes. many overnight. after strong winds spread the forest fires raging for more than a week now. this is in the westernmost province much british columbia. close to 3,000 firefighters facing dry conditions trying to get this outbreak under control. in total, 160 fires are burning. officials say it was too soon to say how much damage and how much loss has been done because the conditions are way too dangerous right now. we'll keep you updated. eun? angie, thank so much. volunteers and veterans will care for some much our nation's most hallowed grounds. >> it's the annual day

ras were not turned on. they're looking for surveillance video. a surge in acid attack in britain is raising concerns. last week a 16-year-old boy was charged in connection to five attacks in london. the british government is now considering whether to put restrictions on selling corrosive liquids or creating tough penalties for those kinds of assaults. iran has sentenced an american citizen for ten years in prison for infiltrating the country -- the man is a graduate student and arrested last summer while doing research. university says it is working to facilitate his release. the "washington post" reporter held for months and freed last year has been calling attention to the issue on twitter. it was a wild and terrifying scene played out in front of people enjoying a summer day on an indiana lake. >> a boat operator lost control and sent all people on board

police say dominique, the person operating the boat, hit a high rate of speed and made a violent turn. by the time help arrived, the boat was sort of stalking the area, if you will. like a motorized shark in a way. didn't stop until it smashed into a police officer's patrol boat and another officer on a jet ski jumped on. >> once i was close enough, it was just a matter of stepping from his boat into that boat. >> the police say alcohol was a factor here. the boat's operator was arrested. >> it was one of the stories that dominated the rio olympics. team usa swimmers lied about being robbed and filed a false police report. 11 months after the incident, the charges against ryan lochte have been dropped. a brazilian court ruled that lochte's claims during an nbc interview did not

filing a fake report. pop star erin carter is facing serious charges this morning. he and his former girlfriend were arrested saturday night in georgia for dui. police also said he had drugs on him. carter is best known as a child and teen pop star and the brother of backstreet boys performer nick carter. news for your health this morning, the district has the highest liver cancer rates in the country. this is according to a recent american cancer society study. overall, deaths are on the rise across the country. there will be an estimated 25,000 cancer deaths. only one in five will survive after being diagnosed with liver cancer. an innovative program in providence, rhode island is teaching new parents different ways to talk to their children. the program encourages parents to do something called

we are remembering two hollywood greats this morning. oscar winning actor martin landau died this weekend much he's best known for his hit tv show mission impossible. he also won an oscar for best supporting actor in 1995 for his role in ed wood. landau was 89 years old.

confederate general. the debate has been going on for nearly two years. changing the school's name would cost nearly a million dollars. if you drive and have to take a bus or train to work, you'll have more places to park in northern virginia. design plans have been approved for an 1100-space garage in springfield. the garage will sit behind a sunoco gas station at old keene mill road and springfield boulevard. this will not be your average parking garage. it will also have a community event space on the rooftop. that could be used for outdoor movies and a farmers market. construction is expected to start in 2019 and the garage would open in 2022. we want to remind you that work to waterproof some metro train tunnels is changing the red line schedule on weekends through august 11th. you'll need to hop on a shuttle bus to get between friendship heights and medical center. during the week the work is happening after 9:00 at night. you can ride the trainut

arlington national cemetery where hundreds of landscapers are ready to honor those who died for our country. today is the annual day of service at one of our nation's most hallowed sites. this is the 21st year for this particular event. >> aimee cho is live with more on the meaning for this event. >> reporter: aaron, eun, good morning. this is the final resting place for hundreds of thousands of veterans, people who have given so much to our country. it's really about honoring what they've done, making their final home more beautiful. hundreds of volunteers will be coming to donate their time and joining one of those volunteers. coming here from georgia to be here today. why did you decide to get involved. >> i'm one of the many volunteers who come together every year to help beautify what's already a very beautiful place in honor of our

doing? >> there will be members doing a variety of things. some will be doing tree cabling to prevent lightning strikes. some will be doing lining, irrigation work. there's a children's program where we've got 50 children planting flowers at the nurse's memorial and a wide variety of typical landscape beautification projects. >> some great work and a very great cause. thanks for being with us, ed. >> reporter: these events kick off this morning at 7:30. part of that includes laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. volunteers hope it's a change that will brighten your day. dozens of people worked to clean up d.c.'s h street corridor yesterday. they swept sidewalks and picked up trash all the way to 12th street northeast. volunteers say a cleaner community will instill pride and keep crime down. now to capitol hill where a key vote on the future of your health care has been delayed again. nbc's

>> chris, why the delay here and what impact could it have on people's health care coverage? >> mitch mcconnell had fully intended to bring the gop's latest version of their health care bill to repeal and replace obamacare to a vote this week. but over the weekend we learned that john mccain underwent unscheduled surgery over the weekend for a blood clot over his eye. some experts say it could be longer than this week. mcconnell decided to delay the vote. he's dealing with razor-thin margins here. at least two senators say they oppose the gop -- two republican senators have said that. with mccain not here, he didn't have the vote to pass it. what does it mean for people at home, status quo. if you have employer-provided insurance, you retain that. you keep going on that plan. medicare, medicaid remains the
