limits because of security restrictions that are related to the president. and good evening, everybody. we begin tonight with storm team 4. we are seeing some strong storms popping up out there and there is a flash flood warning now in effect. >> doug, tell us all about it. >> we've been seeing the storms develop. they continue to develop because of that, we have flash flooding on going right now. couple of roads closed. you can see what's happening. -- this is the area we've been watching, through here. now, starting to see more storms pop up right on the border here, right around prince georges montgomery. right along i-95. incredibly heavy rain there. then another storm around frederick. this one not moving much either, we can continue to see flash flooding with those, too. wouldn't be surprised if we heard a warning here at either of these two storms as they're

thunderstorms developing. it's right along i-95 at the worst part of the afternoon rush. gaithersburg area, this is the area you can see, this includes just to the north here. we do have some of it coming out of bounds. make sure you never drive through flooded roadways. no severe thunderstorm warnings in effect. currently, the warning that we have, has been cancelled a little bit earlier. not a lot of lightning with that storm, just a lot of heavy rain. the lightning, now. the strongest storm right around and over towards the coldsville area. >> it's been hot. 90 deglees. between 95 and 100 this afternoon, the real heat, moves back in again, i've got at least one day over the next few with temperatures close to 100 degrees. the heat making its way back in. >> thank you, doug. some tense moments up

a u.s. capitol police officer is now recovering after an out of control car crashed right into his cruiser. >> this happened on independence avenue and 2nd street in southeast this morning. it had the area blocked off for most of the afternoon. derrick ward is live on capitol hill with more of the details on this, hey, derrick. >> reporter: well the scene is cleared now. this is the intersection of second street and independence avenue. you're looking at the library of college. that building that's in the background there. if you're familiar with this area, you know there's always a capitol police officer stationed at that little triangle where you see that red barrier. that is to keep traffic flowing well. also to stop oversized vehicles that could pose a danger to the federal enclave from entering. this was tense scene earlier this morning. it all started by 11:45. we know that the driver and police officer involved were both injured, both minor injuries. the driver, though, is

some serious charges, including assault with the deadly weapon, assaulting a police officer, that's felony assault. aggravated reckless driving and driving without a permit. now, 11:45 police say the black sedan you see in the video was westbound on independence avenue when it struck the barrier and the police cruiser. now, again, there were some minor injuries there. police immediately focused on that car because they were treating it as an suspicious vehicle. they wanted to make sure they pose no threat. now they sent in a remote controlled robot. they did two disruptions, those are small disruptions. it was about 2:45 when they finally got a bomb tech in there to go through the car. he searched that car and found that there was nothing suspicious and the scene was cleared. they shortly after that, towed both of those vehicles

>> there was no connection to terrorism in this incident. they do want to find out exactly what started it all. we're live on capitol hill, derrick ward, news 4. >> here at the sheriff's office, an internal investigation is now underway into how one of their deputies happened to give a young man a ride into the middle of the night and ended up losing both service revolver and suv. they're comparing stories as they try to figure out exactly how this happened in their criminal case. >> this is the 22-yearld

charged with carjacking and other offenses. the incident started at this gas station and convenience store. it was closed around 4:15 when the off duty deputy says he gave him a ride then dropped him off here. he returned to the store parking lot and confronted the suspect. investigators say he then got hold of the deputy service weapon and carjacked the deputy's vehicle. this suv. after the deputy called 911. officers rushed to the area. >> it was about 8:00 a.m. when the cattle started acting up. by that time, clark county sheriff's office issued a community line alert about the man hupt. three men working at the barn heard the cattle and then saw the suspect. one pulled his gun and ordered his man to the ground. he fled again tohe

into an unlocked car. here is a cell phone photo taking at the moment when the suspect was taken into custody. investigators have since learned he was on parole for a similar crime in new york state. >> he took off and ended up in my front yard and ultimately in my car and locked the door and policeman were surrounding him so he opened the door. >> so he surrendered in your front yard. >> yes. now, again, here at the sheriff's office, internal affairs investigation is underway. i'm not told not only was he off duty. but he was out on sick leave at the time of the incident. tonight he remains out on sick leave. back to you now in the studio. >> julie carey. julie, thank you. president trump calls it the winter white house and in just a couple of months we may have a better idea of who has been visiting his

maple syrup to luxury yachts and the helicopter that the president flies in, marine one. virginia was represented by a flag company based in alexandria. maryland was represented today by a company that makes crab pots. >> made in america is everything. we don't want flags made overseas for our military to be parading with or being decorated at the white house or the government agencies anywhere. >> if we keep importing stuff, we lose that money, that goes back into our economy and that just brings our country down. i mean, we're trying to make our country better and not bringing it down. >> not part of today's showcase in made of america's products was the nation's capitol, washington, d.c. we asked the white house repeatedly today why dc was not part of the event. they have not responded to our request.

tracee. >> police are desperately searching for information to help them with this investigation. they're only saying that this man is 35 to 34-year-old hispanic male. his body was found right over this way. as it stands, they cannot identify him. they need the public's help. >> right here. >> this man who did not want to be identified says that at 4:00 a.m. on sunday, he discovered a man lying on the street, his clothing was partially removed. >> i called 911 and the operator told me to get close to him and see if he was breathing or not and i said, no, he's not, he's gone. >> it looked like someone hit him right here and

international. investigators interviewed the captain of their air canada flight today. they say that plane, carrying 140 people almost landed on a taxi way instead of the runway last week, coming within 100 feet of plowing into a line of other planes waiting to take off. that's roughly the distance between bases on a baseball field, that's how close. investigators are trying to figure out how the crew can make such a basic and potentially deadly mistake. >> if this accident was not overted, i can't even imagine the extent of the mayhem, in my estimation, perhaps the worst aviation accident in the history. >> the ntsb is reviewing the black box data. the security camera footage will be talking to the co-pilot tomorrow and talking to the air traffic controllers by midweek. >> in news for your health tonight, tracking changes in someone's speech pattern may provide an early sign of mental

researchers representing and presenting an alzheimer's conference say they showed a group of people the same picture two years apart and asked them to describe it. they tell us people with early stage mild cognitive impairment showed a faster slide on certain verbal skills. and we're not talking about extra -- or trouble recalling names. if confirmed the researchers say speech analysis could be a way to screen people for early signs of mental decline. and what you eat may also play a big role in your brain's health as you age. a team of researchers find that sticking to diets that are rich in grains, nuts, dark green vegetables and healthy fats from fish can actually lower the risk for cognitive decline, by one third. diets that fall into this category, that includes the dash diet, mediterranean, the mind diet, which is now a hybrid of those two diets. >> fats, good fats, like fat

college park as we're looking at some of the lightning here, too, and heads up a very slow go of things along the beltway and along 95 as well as over towards 295. up towards the north, this is an area that's seen ran for about the last hour or so, western frederick, seeing a pretty good storm, we could see some flooding in this region, too, remember, never drive through flooded roadways we talk about it all the time. let's not have any more of those water rescues going on. you can see numerous storms developing. severe thunderstorms well to the north. few thunderstorms around our area, too. that will be the case through the evening hours. most of us, should remain on the dry side. we'll continue to watch the area of stormness, wind out of the south at 12 miles per hour. the temperatures around the rest of the area, 90 culpepper. 71 as a result of that rain that's coming down baltimore, baltimore seeing rain in the 70s. everybody else, we'llet

neighbors in one alexandria community are angry tonight and skeptical about placing more american flags outside their homes. we told you last week, flags were burned on several houses, including the home of a world war ii veteran. and today we know more homes have been hit in that same neighborhood. news 4 chris gordon has new details right now at 5:30. chris, what are you learning? >> reporter: well, tonight we're learning more about this investigation. a home surveillance video camera

alone, walking throughout this alexandria neighborhood last night, setting fires to flags. now, alexandria police and fire have asked us not to broadcast that video while this investigation is underway. >> about 10:30 last night, i was walking upstairs -- >> reporter: he says his hallway lit up last night. when he went to the front door, he found his american flag was on fire. he turned over video to arson investigators from his home security camera and described for us, what it shows. >> i saw one house up the street go up, the next house go up. the gentleman come walking up this way opened my front gate that we're standing in now. walked up to my house, lit it on fire and went up this way. >> reporter: it began on july, four homes with flags out front were vandalized. he found the flag in front of his home had been set on fire. th

is needed to keep these self driving cars and trucks on track when they're in highway traffic. in the meantime, tesla, is looking into a crash in minnesota. the driver says he used the auto pilot feature on his model s and his vehicle went off the road. that system drives. it breaks and it keeps a car in a lane. it requires the driver to continually touch the steering will. now, the cameras have been installed in a work zone on the southeast portion of the beltway. it's near suitland road. it's part of a bridge replacement project meant to keep drivers and workers safe. beginning today any driver that goes more than 12 miles an hour over the posted speed limit will receive a 40-dollars ticket in the mail. enforcement won't actually

on this case. iranian judicial official says the student was arrested in iran and being sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of spying for the united states. the graduate student in history vanished months ago in iran, but it was only yesterday that the ultra hard line judiciary announces arrests and sentencing. now although the judiciary didn't mention him by name or nationality. the web site run by him named him as 37-year-old wang and labeled him as one of the american infiltrators who had a web of connections with american and british intelligence. they described him as fluent and said he had archived 4,500 pages of iranian documents and had done super confidential research for the u.s. state department, the harvard kennedy school and british institute of persian studies. the state department has

they're searching for a tenth victim. they're in the air and on the ground in the national forest looking for a 13-year-old boy who was in a group that got swept away in a furious flash flood over the weekend. the authorities have recovered nine bodies. they're among 14 family and friends who had met up for a day trip along a popular swimming pole. >> it will be like 20 seconds, like, no warning at all the largest in rushing down. >> more severe weather could be on the way there as monsoon storms in the potential for flash flooding could cause more problems in the middle of the week. >> coming out of there. >> all right. doug. we've got intense rain. it was pretty quick in my neighborhood any way. >> that's what happened, sunny probably where you were and it comes very quickly and very large drops coming down today. and sunshine on the back end. that was in dc if you live out towards parts of central montgomery county. you saw it for hours, parts of the

let's show you what's happening right now on the radar. you see not a lot going on now, especially in through southern maryland, down towards fredericksburg, not a lot, seeing shower and thunderstorm activity. you notice what's been happening, montgomery county, northern prince georges county and right up towards the baltimore area, these little red boxes here. these are flash flood warnings, this one in parts of montgomery county. first, some heavy rain right now around frederick, down towards the prince georges county area, in towards parts of montgomery. here is the flash flood warning. this is around montgomery village, we have had some roads closed because of this. we have a crew on the scene here as we did see some of the roads due to high water. now, we're watching i-95. baltimore right on down to dc. it is a mess it's going to stay that way. that includes 295 as well. up towards the frederick area, look at this, we've seen numerous storms develop here and then move off towards the e

i would not be surprised to see flash flooding on going in frederick and around this area. so watch out around middleton. watch out to the west here, just to the north, we could see some heavy rain and we'll continue to see that, too. now, the line of storms, you've seen it all across parts of the northeast today and makes its way close to our region, but that's really about it. behind this, we're going to stay on the hot side. right now, the temperatures sitting at 90 degrees at the airport. look at the dark clouds, right now still seeing some sunshine, 90 degrees here, heat index well into the 90s. look outside right now, after what was a great weekend, laura, we're starting to see the humidity creep back up. >> we're seeing the humidity as of this morning and it's continuing through this afternoon and, unfortunately for us, going to continue on through the work week. let's show you what the heat index is out there right now. it is warm, 93 is heat index, you can see some areas have cooled. tuesday is going to be exactly like today, the

>> if they deem it necessary to have a restrictive zone as anticipated through this interim rule, what they've done is way too much and they need to scale it back. >> that many here say they don't even use. susan shares the cruisers association. >> it just seems blatantly unfair that trump shuts everything down so he can have a nice day playing golf and the rest of us are just out of luck. >> we're told that these new rules are already being implemented, but there is about a month period where people can send in written comments and some here are hoping a compromise can be reached so that the entire river section won't be shutdown. they'll be able to come up with a better solution. along the patomic
