a deadly accident on a popular roadway. good morning, i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. we just found out two people have died. >> we have team coverage for you. melissa is going to tell us how to get around the closures, if there's a way around it. we start with megan mcgrath live on the scene. megan? >> reporter: well, just a short time ago i got an update from police. we have learned that this was a head-on collision. you can see the crash scene behind me. we've moved to a different location since we last spoke to you. we're a little closer to the cars involved. a tremendous amount of damage to both of the cars. we have learned that two people have died. they were pronounced dead here on the scene. in terms of the traffic impact, this is on route 210. indian head highway. it is closed in both directions between kerby hill and palmer. both directions, because of the debris field. the cars themselves, they're on the southbound side. both were on

when the head on collision occurred. but the debris field is on the other side of the road on the inbound lanes of route 210. that's going to be a problem. i'm told that accident reconstruction will be here for at least two hours. trying to figure out exactly what happened. >> our investigators are still on scene trying to determine whether the vehicles crossed over the median or whether it was traveling northbound in southbound lanes at this time. >> reporter: so a lot of work still to be done to figure that out. the medical examiner is here on the scene as well. we're talking at least a couple of hours before things get back to normal. of course, route 210, a major commuter route. this is going to cause real problems this morning. with more on that, we're going to go over to melissa for the work around. how is it looking? >> this is obviously a big mess for a lot of people. there is no great work around. in h

between kerby hill and palmer. if you're coming northbound or southbound, you can try oxen hill road and try old fort and work your way to the east around that way. it is going to be very slow and a big wait if you try to head that way this morning. massachusetts avenue here, near water side drive, all lanes blocked for a downed tree in northwest. also in the district, southbound 295 here at malcolm x, right lane getting by the crash. as you widen out, you can see no other major problems. nothing is getting through. everything is shut down. good morning, ms. ricketts. >> good morning, melissa. outside today, another hot one. yesterday we were hot. today hot. through the weekend, it's weather alert out there. for today and pretty much through the weekend. the heat and humidity are not going anywhere yet.

who was innocent, so now you're going to have to come after me and may god get you. >> 20-year-old john christian webster, also known as jaycee was shot and killed wednesday night. his family and friends gathered to remember him at a vigil. the shooting happened inside his family's home in the forest glenn area of silver spring. his mom saw the killer come into her home and shoot her son. >> i saw what you did, i chased you to your car. so you know that i recognize you and the car. >> detectives believe jc knew the shooter. sources close to the investigation said montgomery county police are looking for three possible suspects in a dark colored honda. today a former school security guard will be in court. the 21-year-old is accused of having a sexual relationship

they met working at colonel e brook school. court documents show he worked part-time at rockville high school between september of 2015 and february of 2016. new this morning, prince george's county police have released new information on a crash that we reported as breaking news yesterday morning. we now know tre'shaun hagans crashed on white house road in upper marlboro. live power lines wrapped around the truck as asphalt spilled out on to the road. police say it appears she lost control while on a curve. she was 28 years old. those of you waking up in the columbia forest section of arlington may not have water. crews had to shut down water lines in order to make emergency repairs. those repairs are happening right now at columbia pike and south frederick street. traffic is being impacted in that area as well. everything should be back to

right now, a group of teenagers from burr undi is still missing. they vanished tuesday after an international robotics competition in d.c. two teens from that group were spotted crossing the canadian border. the trail has gone cold on the other four. they left their room keys behind indicating they plan to leave on their own. the teams have one-year advice as right now. they may not be doing anything illegal at this point. the state department issued a warning against travel to that east african country last month. it was due to political tension and sporadic violence including attacks by armed groups. a leader here in the u.s. think the teens may be trying to seek asylum. erika gonzalez has new video from a deadly earthquake overnight. erika, what's going on? >> a 6.7 magnitude quake

rising water flooded the city of arcadia. 30 homes had to be evacuated. all the roads around the city are shut down. in a few weeks, we'll be able to see another solar eclipse. >> that is happening right in our area. who better to get us ready for this sky show than our chuck bell. he's live at nasa this morning with what we're calling a pre-eclipse preview. chuck, good morning. >> reporter: good morning eun and aaron. good morning from nasa goddard. for some reason, the moon and nasa look better here. we're 30 days away from the first total solar eclipse since 1918. almost 100 years since a total solar eclipse go all the way across the continent of north america. it will be visible everywhere in all

alas alaska. we'll get a view of the eclipse. our view will not be 100%. a little video for you. we'll get about 80% coverage of the sun in the metro washington area. lower amounts of eclipse coverage the farther north you go. higher amounts the farther south you go. the totality goes from oregon all the way to charleston, south carolina. so the path of totality is what we're calling it, it's about a 70 mile wide strip that goes south of portland, oregon, across the plains to the western carolinas to charleston over the ocean. if you want to see the total solar eclipse, you have to drive south of here. you have 30 days to come up with a plan for where you want to be. closest to us, western carolinas. know this. the weather community, the astronomy community have been getting the word out and the hotels in and around

totality are nearly booked up already. if you want to make a day trip to see it, here's friendly advice. don't even think about driving down i-95 to charleston on the day of the eclipse much the eclipse will occur, the totality will occur around 2:30, 3:00 in the afternoon. i-95 will be a parking lot trying to get down to that spot. so just know, if you're going to go make a plan to leave saturday and spend saturday night, sunday night where the path is. because getting to the path of totality on the eclipse day itself will be nearly impossible. i will be there myself. we're talking about heat in abundance. more on the forecast in a bit. let's go back to the air-conditioned studio for now. >> chuck, you've been planning this trip tore a long time now. it's going to be exciting to see this happen everywhere. >> very cool. thank you, chuck. want to turn to lauryn ricketts.

killed. the lion was shot earlier this month. the "washington post" reports this happened on a legally sanctioned hunt. it's been two years since the american hunter killed cecil. that sparked a big response around the world. a man's best friend has come home after a tragic crash. william slesh inger died in a crash. he was from arlington. his dog nellie was in the car with him. she ran away but now she's been found. she wandered up to a convenience store. the people recognized her as the missing dog and sent her to the vet. she's being treated for a broken leg and bug bites and lived with her owner's sister.

that breaking news, a deadly accident on 210 that has killed two people. here's a live look from chopper 4 which just arrived on the scene. good morning everyone. i'm eun yang. >> it is 5:30 right now. a live report from the chopper in just a minute here. let start with melissa mollet. this is going to make it hard for folks who commute along 210 this morning. definitely going to make it hard for a lot of commuters. we're talking about into ft. washington, out of the area. chopper 4 over the scene here on indian head highway. you can see how bad that crash is here this morning. a double fatal accident. happened just after 2:00 a.m. indian head highway between kerby hill and palmer. still have all lanes blocked. going to be like this through the morning commute. that's alternate here. going to the east side of

there for quite a long time. we're up in the chopper to see a two-mile zoom going on. tell us what you're seeing brad >> just a terribly violent crash on 210. if you look at the center of the shot there, you can see how bad the debris field is between these two vehicles. we're hearing a head-on collision on the southbound side. both directions are closed as we've been reporting and as you've been saying. the best alternate route is a combination of oxen hill road and old fort road. this cleanup and investigation is going to take some time. you want to think about an alternate route. what else is going on? >> taking a look at the beltway, routes are okay. means you aren't getting through any time soon. avoid the area.

assaulting children while working in their homes. >> erika gonzalez joins us with more on this alleged crime. erika? >> aaron, fairfax county police arrested him yesterday. he's accused of assaulting at least three children during the last several years. ranging in ages from 4 to 11 years old. police say he came into contact with the children while working as an independent contractor. >> while parents were elt elsewhere in the home and palma was around the home, it's alleged he had inappropriate contact with these children. >> sadly, police believe that there may be more victims. they want to hear from anybody who thinks their child, they have come into contact with palma. back into the studio. the baby-sitter who police say fell asleep on the job and let two kids wander outside is behind bars this morning. prince william county police

she had run from police when they came to question her about the july 15th incident in dumfries. she fell asleep while watching a boy and his sister. allen is charged with felony child neglect. a follow-up to a story we've been following for you. something other than trash is leading raccoons to attack people. a facebook page is keeping track of a string of attacks in the fair lynnington neighborhood. there is speculation construction sites are pushing raccoons towards people's houses. four things to know about the attacks. there have been at least three this year. last week a woman was attacked and neighbors say she needed more than 80 stitches. then a man was attacked wednesday morning. he's being treated for rabies. animal control was not able to catch the

5:40 right now. in baltimore, state's attorney marilyn mosby is reviewing cases involving the three officers involving this video. mosby says it's a matter of public safety to look at the evidence in those cases. they're also exploring whether there are alternative ways to prove the cases. the officer that apparently planted the evidence is suspended. the other two are on administrative leave. strong words from the chief of police in minneapolis about the officer who shot a woman who had called police for help. >> the chief didn't defend her officer and vowed justice will be served.

refused to speak with investigators about the shoot thag killed justine damond. she called to report an assault outside her home. when the officers arrived, she approached their car. according to his partner, a noise startled him and he shot her through the patrol car's window. the officer's body cameras were not turned on and the chief says that's a problem. >> based on the publicly released information from the vca, this should not have happened. on the squad cars, you will find the words to protect with courage and serve with compassion. this did not happen. >> the police chief promised to make changes to policy to ensure that cameras are on before officers had any interaction at the scene of a call. it is the latest scam to get you to give up your personal information. >> what you need to know about something called smishing before you respond to certain

will head to one of the largest sanctuary cities, philadelphia. he's meeting with federal, state and local law enforcement to talk about sanctuary cities in efforts to combat violent crime. the attorney general and philadelphia officials have been at odds since president trump took office in january. we're learning about a possible investigation into the team heading the russia investigation. president trump's legal team says there could be conflicts of interest. meanwhile, there are reports about the president questioning his pardoning powers. sarah dallof here to break it all down. good morning. >> good morning, aaron and eun. call it investigating the investigators. according to report, the president's legal team is looking at potential conflicts of interest surrounding aides on robert mueller's team, possibly in an effort to undercut or discredit their investigation. the president issued a warning to mueller via an interview in "the new york times" this week cautioning him about looking into

southbound side of 210. we have chopper 4 overhead. let's look at the aerials. here this happened at 2:30 this morning. a tremendous amount of damage to both vehicles involved. two people, one from each car pronounced dead on the scene. indian head highway has been closed in both directions ever since, between kerby hill and palmer. you're being detoured at those two roads there. we are starting to see a traffic impact. take a closer look here at the ground video here. accident reconstruction is here on the scene. they've been here all morning long. i'm told they will be here for at least another hour, perhaps longer trying to figure out exactly what happened here. both of the cars were on the southbound side of 210. it's unclear at this point if one of the cars was driving down the wrong side of the road or if one of the cars crossed the median into the southbound lanes. both of the cars hitting
