>> sounds like a flashback to the '90s, the country glued to the television sets waiting to see the fate of o.j. simpson. >> there is a lot to get to this morning. o.j. simpson soon to be a freeman after that decision by the nevada parole board. the country's most infamous inmate granted parole but not before simpson made controversial statements about his past. we have full coverage. let us start with nbc's joe fryer. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. no specific date has been set yet but after nine years behind bars o.j. simpson will leave prison as early as october 1st. he says he would like to move to florida, though there is a pro skes to make that happen. this all comes after a unanimous vote to grant simpson's parole. >> mr. simpson, i do vote to grant parole when eligible and that will conclude this hearing. >> thank you. >> reporter: no stranger to dramatic moments o.j. simpson's relieved reaction to a life altering decision was

broadcast on live tv. the ruling came after a 75-minute hearing with simpson from his prison pressing his case to the parole board 130 miles away. >> i take full responsibility. >> reporter: in vivid detail he recounted his version of events surrounding the ill-fated armed confrontation that landed him behind bars. >> it was my property. i wasn't there to steal from anybody. >> reporter: at times he expressed regrets. >> i'm sorry it happened. i'm sorry to nevada. >> reporter: in other moments he appeared to some observers more defensive. >> nobody has ever accused me of pulling any weapon on them. i basically have spent a conflict-free life. >> reporter: those statements stunning to christopher darden. >> it's outrageous. >> reporter: author of the book "in contempt" he was one of the prosecutors when simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife nicolle brown and her friend ron goldman. >> i don't know that he is a low risk that the parole board decided he is. i don't know. if i lived next door to o.j.

very concerned. >> reporter: the parole board received hundreds of letters from the public, many citing the murder case and the multi-million dollar civil judgment against simpson. >> however, these items will not be considered in this case. >> reporter: instead parole commissioners heard from one of the robbery victims, brews froman. >> o.j. is my friend, always has been. >> reporter: he not only testified that simpson should be released but offered to pick him up from prison. >> juice, i will be here tomorrow for you. i mean that, buddy. >> reporter: there were also lighter moments highlighting the nerves in both locations. >> and we have that you are currently -- well, very recently turned 90 years old. 90. i'm sorry about that. you look great for 90. >> reporter: now at age 70 simpson can start preparing for life as a free man. simpson says he's not looki

adding that he has turned down interviews during his time behind bars. the parole board made it very clear if he violates the conditions of his release he will be right back here behind bars. >> joe fryer, thank you. let's focus more on the road ahead for o.j. simpson. nbc's andrea canning sat down with one of his close friends who was in that hearing room at lovelock correctional center. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. tom scotto has been o.j.'s most loyal friend for decades. we sat down with him after that hearing. he said there were tears and big emotion in that room. o.j.'s first words were "i'm coming home." tom and the family sat down with o.j. for four hours in lovelock prison yesterday to talk about all kinds of things but the biggest thing is what happens next. >> i said to o.j., man, you look to fantastic. i'm so proud of you. look at you. you're shining. >> i do vote to grant parole. >> reporter: it's the moment

o.j. simpson has been waiting for for nine years and there supporting him next to simpson's family was his close friend tom scotto. what was the first thing he said to you after finding out he was going to be released. >> he came out yelling, i'm going home. i'm coming home. >> reporter: friends for more than 20 years it was scotto's 2000 wedding that brought simpson to las vegas. hours later he took part in that botched burglary that landed him behind bars. >> what has this taught him. >> this has humbled him. the warden loves him. calls him into her office and talks to him about things. these are great inmates. >> he says simpson now hopes to move to florida where scotto lives. >> is there a chance he might live with you? >> yeah, he talked about that. there's a chance. >> do you worry, does anybody worry about o.j. that he could end up back behind bars if he reenters society?

clearly what he did was inappropriate, but he lives -- look, we go out, we don't hide, we go out in public, we go to rest presidents ra. we go out and we have fun. we don't hide. >> absolutely 100% not guilty. >> there has been so much renewed attention on o.j. not just from this hearing but the drama that won the emmys. what does evening of all of this? >> he thought they were terrible. >> does o.j. still maintain his innocence in the murders? >> absolutely. >> is it something that haunts him? >> we don't really want to talk about it. we kind of want to talk forward instead of backwards. everybody has, you know, tried to destroy him over that. >> what do you say to those people who want to see o.j. stay behind bars for those crimes that he was acquitted of. >> first of off i will make clear he is in prison not for vegas, he is in prison for

absolutely. >> simpson has been a model prisoner, but what will he be like on the outside? >> what's he want to do with his life? >> he wants to play golf, see his kids, see his family and hang out with his friends. very few friends he has. >> why have you stuck by him through the good and the bad? >> you know, he is my best friend. i love him. i lost contracts with my business because i stuck by him. i have to do what's right, you know, and that's what i felt with my heart. >> reporter: so what happens right now? scotto says he talked to the warden yesterday who says o.j. was to immediately clear out his cell. he was going to be moved to a more secure location where he will be housed by himself until his release date and that is to protect him. tom scotto says the days he gets out he will be waiting for him at lovelock. >> thanks so much. let's turn to nbc's senior legal and investigative correspondent cynthia mcfadden.

mcfadden, who has been covering the case since that trial. i know you were watching that parole hearing as closely as all of us were. to me, it seemed like the parole board knew what they were going to do. >> as you know, the parole board has very specific guidelines for what they need to do. and o.j. checked all of the boxes. at the beginning of the hearing, we heard the risk factors were low, the aggravating factors, to keep him in, was because the victims feared for their safety. we had one of the victims, the only surviving victim was saying, it's all cool with me. >> and i'll pick you up. >> you knew they were going to release him. but i have to tell him, o.j. simpson did himself no favors yesterday. what he said to the parole board, my jaw was hanging down. >> he looked like a guy that knew what the parole board was going to do. he was

redefiant. reliving the case. >> one might even say cocky. >> do you think he could have compromised his ability to reach parole? >> i think the way the rules were set up, that parole board had no choice but to parole him. and let's just put on the table, nine years for this crime is a long time. i think the parole board did what it needed to do. but o.j. simpson said he lived a conflict-free life. >> everyone remembers immediately the sounds of nicole brown simpson screaming for her life, on a 911 call. >> and the photographs of her, the testimony of her sister saying she was in fear for her life. nicole said over the years, he someday is going to kill me. that made it hard to swallow. >> the road ahead, a couple

the president went after his own attorney general. a lot to get through. peter alexander standing by at the white house. >> reporter: good morning to you. another quiet friday at the white house. first, about that shakeup. nbc news has confirmed that mark kasowitz is no longer leading the president's outside legal counsel. we are told he will continue to provide guidance to the president. and two months of coming onboard, the legal team spokesperson tells me he has resigned. there's new indications that the president may be lying the groundwork to undermine the special counsel robert moouelle. this morning, there's reports that the trump team is look to undercut robert mueller's investigation. trump's backgrounds of people o mueller's team. "the post" asked the president about his pardon powers,

aides and himself. the story is nonsense. the president's lawyers are cooperating with special counsel robert mueller. aides are making clear that the special counsel should not move outside of the investigation. >> would that be a breach? >> i would say yes. >> reporter: u.s. officials familiar with the probe, says he's finding the strike zone, gathering relevant documents, including business records. the fbi will pursue any credible evidence of possible crimes regardless of whether they are russia-related. jeff sessions insists he's planning to stay put. >> we love this job. we love this department. and i plan to continue to do so as long as that is appropriate. >> reporter: the show of confidence coming one day after the public undressing of sessions. accusing the

back to this morning's headline about the russia investigation, president trump told aides he was disturbed after being told that the special counsel was able to access several years of his tax returns. that's according to "the washington post." his lawyers warning that the scope has to stay within mueller's mandate. saying if there's drifting, they will object. >> no shortage of news. the russia investigation top of mind in moscow, where the country's top diplomat is speaking out to us this morning. keir simmons did that interview exclusively. keir, good morning. >> reporter: we know of three meetings between president trump and president putin at the g20 summit. one of them revealed only this week. and now, russia's foreign minister reveals there may have been more meetings between the two men. >> reporter:

in southern california. a red car collided with another vehicle, lost control and ended up crashing into a starbucks. seven people, suffered nonlife threatening injuries. we begin this half hour, turning back to o.j. simpson. and the question, what is next for him after being granted parole? it looks like he will be heading to florida when he is released. gabe gutierrez has that from naples. >> reporter: it's unclear where o.j. simpson will settle down. but a close friend says it's possible and there's a chance he could end up in this community. tom scotto says that simpson plans to check in with a parole officer in miami. and the state of florida must decide if simpson is eligible to serve out his parole here. this morning, questions are swirling about where o.j. simpson will spend his new life outside prison. but it appears he's heading back to the sunshine state. >> we've been made aware that you're requesting to live in

florida. >> reporter: his daughter, sydney, and son, justice, a real estate agent, live in st st. petersburg, near tampa. and he has a history in south florida. in 2000, he moved to this home in the miami area. but it wasn't long before he was back in the media spotlight. in 2001, he was acquitted in a road rage case. in 2002, he was ticketed for speeding on his boat. and in 2005, a judge ordered him to pay a fine for stealing satellite tv signals. the house he once lived in, foreclosed. but his friend, tom scotto, who lives in this gated community in naples, says there's a chance simpson could stay with him. >> we're going to go somewhere, i can't really share. i'm sorry i can't share it. >> reporter: scotto's neighbors have mixed

million people under some sort of heat advisory or heat warning stretching from the plains all the way to the northeast. that dome of high pressure continues to hang in there. so we have heat indexes today in st. louis topping 110, 101 in atlanta, 104 in d.c. it will feel like 102 in new orleans. this weekend, though, look, temperatures dropping. 97 on saturday in kansas city, ten degrees cooler on monday, same in nashville, chicago. as you get to the northeast temperatures take a tumble as well. temperatures finally start to moderate. that's what's going on around the country, here is what's happening in your neck of the woods. and temperatures are moderating all with a cold front early next week. we will finally get that relief on tuesday, but today heat advisory where it will feel more like 105 for areas east of the blue ridge mountains. current temperature 84 in the district, 72 dulles, 73 gaithersburg at this point. that heat index

way. >> reporter: on thursday musk casually tweeted just received verbal government approval for the boring company to build an underground new york/philadelphia/baltimore/d.c. hyper loop. new york, d.c. in 29 minutes. verbal approval for a massive multi-state, multi-billion dollar legal logistical and bureaucratic bow home myth? from whom? the transportation department said it had no idea. certainly not amtrak. the white house? says a white house spokesman they have talked to elon musk and we believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector. not exactly a signed government contract. musk acknowledged in a later tweet still a lot of work needed to receive formal approval but am optimistic that will come quickly. the hyper loop concept is much closer to reality after a successful test in nevada using

surgery to remove the tumor which luckily was not cancerous. she is on her way to recovery but her mom has a tough road ahead. >> my mom i just hope that we survivors. because i'm worried about her. nobody ever wants to lose their mom. >> maria's mom has the same kind of brain cancer that senator john mccain has. it is particularly aggressive, not worried about herself, only her daughter maria. >> both of those women right by each other's side as they go through it. is there a connection because she has glioblastoma, the mom, and the mom has something else. is there a connection? >> the doctor says no. thankfully they say that maria only has a 6% chance of the tumor recurring now that it's been removed. the mom siio

all right. welcome back. this morning on "today" food summer grilling with skewers, it's a fast and fun way to make a delicious barbecue dish. here with kabob restaurant and hacks is michael shilsen. he soon opened his restaurant monkey tail in florida. >> good to see you. >> what are we working with here on a skewer? >> i will show you simple easy things to do at home, it's what we do in the restaurant but the novice at home really simple, easy, great for parties, great for hors d'oeuvres, great for an tiesers. this is just a fancy name for skewers. okay? we will start out with a chicken one. take basic chicken wings and what i like to do is put it in a brine. i do a cup of water. >> how far ahead are you doing this? >> this is perfect to do probably two hours or 24 hours. then you will put the sa

>> all of it. and what this is going to do is this is going to give you a little bit of flexibility when you cook. it how many times have you gone to somebody's house and had overcooked chicken? not too good. >> you think these skewers are easy but so often the meet is overcooked. >> things that don't have so much fat, this is good, whether it's a piece of steak or chicken, you want to do turkey as well. let it go overnight and when you cook it it's nice and easy. we will take wings and skewer them up. put it right through there. >> i noticed the soaked the skewers. that's important why? >> soaking the skewers is important because every time you put it on the grill it burns. how many times have you tried to grill and it burns at home, it's not fun. if you soak it in water it's a really nice way to keep it from burning. we like to use bamboo skewers which give it a nice little flavor as well. and i used two because if you use one it's going to

just need one skewer. >> got it. >> because it's not going to twist. all you would do is put some salt on there, pepper on there. >> keep it simple, salt and pepper. >> we get to the grill, a nice trick that i have i put aluminum foil on the grill, it prevents everything from sticking, getting too hot and creating a mess. >> you.1h"on't get the flare upç the flame. >> exactly. put the kabobs on there. so you can either do one of two things, you can put the fish on the grill, right on the aluminum foil and you can put the meat -- and the aluminum foil will prevent this from burning. >> and the chicken you like on the foil, too? >> yeah, i like the chicken on the foil. i will show you what this sauce is. shallots, garlic, ginger, you put a little sake in there. >> which one do we like best, guys? >> i like the scallops. >> i love the chicken wings. >> put a litt
