pretty strong storms, lauryn. >> i do. we have a heat advisory and also severe weather this afternoon, strong storms. i'm able to show you where those storms are now. it is 80 degrees out there. the sun is just coming up. a beautiful morning, muggy morning. we've been dealing with it for quite sometime and we're going to continue to deal with it for a little while. now, as far as the heat advisory is concerned, this is the advised area. what's outlined along i-95 corridor. the heat index up to 105. i don't think it will go over. we'll have a little more cloud cover than the past few days. nothing showing up on storm team 4 radar. this dlus ter is what i'm watching as this tracks toward the area. we'll let you know when you can expect storms saturday. that's all coming up in just about 15 minutes. >> lauryn, thank you. 6:01. follow the developing story out of the district a man shot and taken to the

it happened on h street and southeast for the far from the intersection of benning road. you're looking at new video into the newsroom. the man was unconscious but breathing when police arrived. no word yet on a suspect. you can follow updates in our nbc washington app. he's the dad of an air force service member and leader of a small faith group in northern virginia. now today one pastor's community going to hold a fast and vigil. they are hoping to keep him from deportation. last month juan gutierrez was taken into custody when he checked in with immigration officials. gutierrez came to the u.s. from peru in 2002. he had a visa but stated in the country longer than the visa allowed to take care of his family after his wife became pregnant. i.c.e. is enforcing an order of removal the pastor received back in 2012. the virginia interfaith center is supporting him and his family. >> practically impossible to stop that

that being said we organize people of faith and believe in miracles. >> my dad, no, they took him, and i started crying. >> so that vigil is expected to happen at gutierrez home where he usually holds a small sunday service. if you're headed out today, especially around the national mall, could be pretty busy. protesters about to make their way there at the start for public education. >> news 4's derrick ward joins us live with what's fueling this march. good morning, derrick. >> good morning. you know, school is out for summer. some teachers and students and parents and just people who advocate public education will be getting together today. they are doing to end up here at the department of education headquarters. they are going to start a mile away over here. see that big thing there, that's the washington monument. that's where this all starts. this will be the march for public education. it's going to be happening from 10:00 to 2:30. it's also going to be happening in 15 siste

country. now, again, it's beginning at the monument but the actual idea for this began at the women's march. a social studies teacher from pennsylvania got the idea using that kind of event and that kind of organization to forward some causes or at least protest and policies of this administration whenette comes to public education. specifically 13% cuts in spending, expansions of federal voucher programs and protections of students with disabilities and protections for students with loans, federal loans. now, education secretary betsy devos will likely be the lightning rod or you expect to hear her name come up at this protest, demonstration. she has advocated expanding vouchers and policies that made her knock heads with teachers unions. they will also be represented here. but she's called defenders of this -- or her critics defenders of the status quo. that's pretty much where it stands politically. you're going to see some moving road blocks as this march gets under way again

2:30 this afternoon. we are live here in front of the department of education. derrick ward, news 4, back to you. >> 6:05. president donald trump will head to norfolk, virginia this morning. he's going to be there to preside over the commissioning of the first warship of nuclear aircraft carriers. uss gerald r. ford should be operational by 2020. president trump will be joined by the daughter of the ship's namesake, our late president gerald ford. she has earned her place on the deck. she rolled up her sleeves and worked with ship builders over the years as they constructed the warship. >> while the president in norfolk, back in d.c. major developments this morning. this surrounding the russia investigation. reports that attorney general jeff sessions discussed campaign matters with russia's ambassador during last year's presidential campaign. this is according to "the washington post." they are citing u.s. intelligence intercepts.

with sergey kislyak. former campaign manager paul manafort and trump jr. will not attend senate judiciary committee hearing next week. instead they have agreed to turn over documents requested by the committee and submit to interviews. the president's son-in-law jared kushner will be interviewed by intelligence community. that will happen tuesday. revolving door at the white house turning again. white house secretary sean spicer resigning. in a late night tweet trump said he's a wonderful person who took tremendous abuse from the fake news media, end quote, and that spicer's future is bright. spicer spoke to sean hannity on fox news about his resignation. >> he wanted to bring new folks in to help rev up communications. my decision was to recommend to the president i give anthony and

from. >> the white house introduced anthony scaramucci and sarah huckabee sanders as the replacement. demanding the mayor step down and even taking over the podium as she was taken out the back door. this happens after police shot and killed a woman. >> we do not want you ever again. we would like you -- >> those protesters right there interrupting mayor betsy hodges friday. that news conference was to announce the resignation of her city's police chief. she stepped aside after last week's deadly shooting of a bride-to-be. you might spot some low flying helicopters today. we're told not to be too worried. u.s. department of energy apparently doing some measures of radiation levels. this is all happening in arlington. it's apparently part of a normal procedure when it comes to emergency preparedness and some security assessments. those helicopters going to be flying at speeds around

taking off and the emergency landing in the east river. no one got hurt but pretty scary, angie. >> absolutely. right now more than 120 structures gone in a massive wildfire. check this out. this is ripping through california. we know more than 60 of those structures were actual homes. the so-called dettwyler near yosemite national park was the most destructive in the nation. the fire exploded across 75,000 acres with flames leaping 100 feet into the air. this is one of 13 large wildfires sweeping across california feeding on millions of dead trees. governor pence jerry brown has declared a state of emergency. >> all right. we are crankying up the ac in the studio. it is quickly warming up outside. it's not the heat you've got to watch out for today. lauryn ricketts closely tracking some dangerous storms moving our way. we're talking

of course time out these storms, let you know what we're talking boult. that's all coming up in about three minutes. thank you, lauryn. firefighters across the region have to fight to stay hydrated in conditions like this. a house fire demonstrated the added challenge they face. >> in temperatures like this fighting even relatively small fire can have serious physical ricks for firefighters. >> up two stories on the ladder carrying in wearing pounds and pounds of firefighting gear. temperatures that were still well into the 90s as sunset approached added additional stress on d.c. firefighters who fought to contain fire on a roof of east summit place. supervisors made sure each one of them visited what the department called a rehab unit stocked with gatorade, water, and clothes soaked in icy water. >> when hot we try to rotate them frequently. we limb

are going to move back into the 90s. i do believe we're going to have a little more chowed cover. strong pm. what was i trying to write this. good morning. strong pm storms. mainly after lunch time. they will continue right through the evening. it's still hot through monday. we're going to be talking about that the heat breaks on tuesday. i know a lot of people want to know when that heat will break. temperatures 80 in washington, everyone else in the 70s. winchester at a cool 68 right now. you factor in the heat index, the humidity, it is feeling a little muggy out there. that's only going to increase throughout the day. heat advisory for areas along i-95 corridor. that heat index is going to be up to 105. i don't believe it will pass that like yesterday mainly because of sunshine factor. 96 for daytime high today. i moved back the temperature yesterday. we moved it up to 99 degrees. again, another hot day with strong afternoon storms. so nothing

storm team 4 radar right now. let me wind this out and show you what i'm watching. this cluster of thunderstorms that moves all the way from ohio and another cluster back in indiana and illinois. that is going to continue to move this way right into our region. tomorrow's forecast we're talking about temperatures in the mid-90s. we will have another chance for storms tomorrow. let me show you what's happening. i do believe this first one will come this afternoon. this one will come late tonight. here we go. 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 looking good this morning. then clouds move in this afternoon. look at this line of storms, 2:30, heavy rain, gusty winds, hail possible. this will continue through the afternoon pushing through our area. then we get a little bit of break. there's number two there. that will come through late this evening and continue through the first part of the overnight. once again talking about high winds, definitely heavy rainfall and definitely some hail. we'll show you that ten-day forecast, show you how cool the heat is coming up in a f

>> they are bringing a lot of them apparently. nbc's tom costello tells us about this growing problem with what passengers are packing. >> scott mccreery winner of "american idol" said he forgot he had a loaded 9 millimeter gun in his pack pat backpack at raleigh-durham. in the first six months of the year tsa discovered 1800 guns, putting it on track for 3600 for the year. yet another record in a string of yearly records. the most common excuse passengers claim they simply forgot. >> so they forgot that they had a loaded firearm with them. you know, if you own a firearm, you really need to know where it is at all times. >> the busiest day last week tuesday the 11th, tsa found 20 games.

police have a canine unit out looking for the suspect right now. >> two men viewing to be the next governor of the commonwealth of virginia, they are going to square off today. republican ed gillespie and democratic ralph north am going to take part in the first of three debates. on pbs at 11:00. it's going to be moderated by judy woodruff. airing a debate later this year on september 19th. mark your calendars. it's going to be held at capital one headquarter in tysons. you see him there chuck todd going to moderate that debate. watch it live on nbc washington app. it took eight months from a police report, a cook and driver from local daycare accused of abuseing a 3-year-old girl. raul tuban is his name. he's free on bond. reactions from parents in gaithersburg. >> obnoxious. it makes me sick to my

>> reporter: jennifer cunningham found out raul tuban, an employee at her daughter's daycare, kindercare is charged with sexual abuse of a minor. jennifer is deciding whether to keep her daughter at the daycare. >> i hope you guys will put the truth, the facts, the details out on the news so that i can then make a conscious decision. >> reporter: montgomery county police say tuban was a cook and driver at the daycare. police arrested the 56-year-old at his house in montgomery village. he bonded out and we tried to get his side of the story. police tell us this all started when a 3-year-old girl was napping at the daycare last october. she woke up and allegedly found tuban touching her inappropriately. the girl told a family member and police were called a monday later on november 22nd. detectives say tuban gave inconsistent statements during a lengthy nine-month investigation. sources tell me he changed his story a few times but

the 3-year-old told investigators. in a written statement kindercare says, quote, when we learned of the allegations against mr. tuban, he was immediately placed on administrative leave. >> but i would not want my daughter in a situation that anybody could prey upon her. >> reporter: in all fairways we talked to two other parents who didn't want to go on camera. they told us they do not believe the allegation. they say raul tuban is a nice guy. meanwhile plays want parents of chirp who go to this kindercare to talk to these kids about any interaction they possibly had with raul tuban. shomari stone, news 4. expect police to be out looking for drunk drivers this weekend. we saw them last night. this is a look from chopper 4. a dui checkpoint. this area known to be deadly. over the last four years, 19 people have died. just yesterday morning two people died when a car drove the wrong way and crashed head on with another.

errant usair strike. the pentagon confirmed the airstrike and now offering condolences to the families of those killed. the strike happened security forces compound u.s. supported operation against taliban insurgents. officials in afghanistan say police officers with the army after they recaptured the post from the taliban. they say the officers were not in uniform at the time. i want to tell you about this story coming into our newsroom, all new this morning. one person dead, two others critically injured, this after a shooting at a popular pizza shot in new mexico. it happened in albuquerque late last night at dion's pizza location. this the type of place people usually go with their kids, husband, wife, family place, right? it happened friday night. we're learning one of the victims was a young boy. witnesses say they heard a commotion outside right before the shooting happened. there's still no word on what caused it. so picture this. you sit down at a starbucks and

split second decision to act. the struggle broke out and the customer was stabbed in the neck but he did manage to grab that knife again and stab the robber several times. wow. >> that was incredibly heroic. it is the way that i would think most people would think they would respond but may not have the courage to respond. >> police say the customer did need staples to mend the stab wound in his neck but will be okay. that's good news. the suspect is arrested and facing charges now. turning to more good news, washington wizards have achieved allan all around mega deal. we're talking mega. they have secured one of the nba's best players to stay right here in d.c. talking about john wall. he's locked in for the next six seasons keeping him in the district through 2023. he's going to get paid for it, pretty well, too. $1 70 million stenson. unbelievable.

for those of you who want to get around washington area. it's going to impact traffic, right, derrick? >> reporter: indeed it will. it's only going to be a mile from the monument to the department of education. but they are going to come down independence avenue and make their way here. this march starts at 10:00 with a rally and then going to end here at 2:30. this is a march for public education. it's going to be happening here in washington and at 15 other cities across the country. they are going to be speakers. there's going to be teachers, students, labor organization representatives and civil rights groups. what's happening is it's going to be in opposition to cuts the administration is making in public education, about 13%. also the expansion of the school voucher program. also marching against loosening of protections for students with disabilities and protections with student loan recipients. at

we're going to stay on a little afterwards and answer questions in case you have timing for where you are. i'm going to try to break it down. we do have a heat index. that's first and foremost. that heat index is up to 105 right along i-95 corridor. starts at noon and goes to 7:00 p.m. it's down right hot. current temperatures 80 degrees in washington, 70s elsewhere. not as muggy a morning as it has been. we're going to warm on up. we're getting cloud cover out there. some areas has sunshine. i do believe the best chance for sunshine would be before noon today. then we have severe weather this afternoon. strong p.m. storms. in fact, some of those could be, as i said, severe. we're looking at maybe just a little bit of cloud cover right now. nothing really happening on storm team 4 radar. these are the areas we're watching. number one coming through ohio and number two right here. really strong wind associated with this one. can you see by the way curves right there. that area of red rig

pool. i would say any time before 2:00 p.m. then we're going to have to keep an eye on the sky. delray musicfest. strong. starts and goes to 8:00. prime time, storms out there. evening concerts, chris stapleton, a lot of big fans. i do believe there's lightning out there. maybe they can get it in between these two storms. this is 7:30. as it moves closer to us we're looking good to 1:00. we'll see how far they slip. mainly they will stay north of i-66, the strongest storms. we can have a few clusters of thunderstorms that gather south of i-66. this is 3:00 lining up along i-81. here we go 4:30. these things moving pretty fast. here in the d.c. area these are packing quite a punch. then we get a little bit of a break. maybe a few isolated storms. then a second round comes through late this evening throughout the first part
