- i'm sara gore. and this is "open house." this week, we're taking a close look at the stunning architecture of the one and only frank lloyd wright. we're in the los feliz neighborhood of los angeles for a rare look at the unique ennis house. plus, we check out the iconic hollyhock house. but first, we head to new canaan, connecticut, to tour the one-of-a-kind tirranna. jim gricar: tirranna is a significant house. and like other significant frank lloyd wright houses, it features a red signature tile at the entry.
2:08 am
welcome to "open house." today's show is all about the art, architecture, and legacy of frank lloyd wright, a man who once wrote that every great architect is necessarily a great poet. so it's only fitting that i'm coming to you from frank lloyd wright's masterpiece, the solomon r. guggenheim museum on the upper east side, just steps from central park. now, we're going to discuss the history of this incredible building a little later. but first, let's take a look at some of his other creations. we're getting started in new canaan, connecticut, at tirranna, one of frank lloyd wright's last residential homes completed towards the end of his life in 1955. in a town with its fair share of architectural masterpieces, tirranna stands alone. sited on 15 acres of natural beauty, each of its nearly 7,000 square feet of flowing interior space

jim gricar: hi, i'm jim gricar of houlihan lawrence. welcome to new canaan, connecticut, a bucolic, elegant town nestled in the fairfield county woods, just an hour's commute north of new york city. if you're a lover of mid-century modern architecture, as i am, you can't do better than new canaan. major houses by significant mid-century modern architects were built here in town by the harvard five largely due to its proximity to new haven and the yale school of architecture and design-- houses by architects like eliot noyes, marcel breuer, philip johnson, and one, but only one, by frank lloyd wright. welcome to tirranna. tirranna is a significant house. and like other significant frank lloyd wright houses, it features a red signature tile at the entry.

of his favorite techniques-- embrace and release. when you first walk in, the embrace comes in the form of more limited space and lower ceilings. the release comes as you enter the public space with increased ceiling heights and a wall of windows overlooking the pond and noroton river. after you've taken in the view, you can really appreciate the scale and design elements of the main living/dining space. frank lloyd wright loved not only the interplay of different dimensions, but also of different materials. this is expressed through the use of classic elements-- mahogany walls and ceilings, cherokee red colorendum floors, and a playful use of concrete block. next to the fireplace is an intimate conversation area. and again, you experience the embrace of the lowered ceiling and also the elegant frank lloyd wright built-in furniture. it also features a frank lloyd wright

and the kettle arm here at tirranna references the front gate on the property. love nature, study nature, stay close to nature. it will never fail you, so said frank lloyd wright. sighted on 15 private acres, the house takes in all nature has to offer. and its focal point is the noroton river and waterfall. and fittingly, the name tirranna comes from an aboriginal word meaning running waters. this part of the house is an addition that was completed in 1959 designed by frank lloyd wright and executed by taliesin west architects, his architecture firm. it includes a family room, interior courtyard, and an elegant master suite.

es the elements used in the living room, including skylights and, once again, gold leaf over the fireplace. looking across the forecourt, you can take in the lovely greenhouse. the scalloping at the top references the solomon r. guggenheim museum, wright's last great public building. this serene space is all about the materials. the ceiling, walls, and custom built-ins are all mahogany. and they even feature the original hardware. the peaceful master suite is a world away. but if you can't sleep, don't count sheep, count stars from your own private observatory. frank lloyd wright's tirranna is an architectural masterpiece, both inside and out. thank you for joining me today.

2:15 am
welcome back. we continue our look at the work of frank lloyd wright at the unique hollyhock house. this was the architect's first los angeles project. and he sought to create a style that was appropriate to the region. see how he managed to do that so successfully. my name is jeffrey herr. and i'm curator here at hollyhock house. hollyhock house is a frank lloyd wright residence designed for oil heiress aline barnsdall.
2:16 am
and incorporate it into the house. and he created a primary geometric abstraction of that flower from nature. its construction began in 1919 and was completed in 1921. hollyhock house is unique in the work of frank lloyd wright, partly because hollyhock house was the first residence he was able to build in southern california. it was also the first house that he was able to experiment with his ideas of japanese architecture, where the wall between the interior and the exterior is dissolved. the interior is the exterior and vice versa. and the first place i'd like to take you to the dining room. please watch your step. the minute you look at the dining room, what you see
2:17 am
with six chairs around it. and i want you to take a quick look at these chairs, because the back of it looks suspiciously like human vertebrae, and of course, it's the spine of the chair-- a visual pun from a man maybe not known to be too humorous. above the table, you'll see a very quirky lamp. this is not frank lloyd wright. the dining room has my favorite art glass windows. when you are walking through the dining room, you're looking out the clerestory windows, but you get no view out of the lower windows. it's not until you sit at the dining room table and lower your gaze that the view outside the lower windows becomes obvious. and suddenly, it's a bit of an aha moment. but let's go into the living room.
2:18 am
a magnificent fireplace with a cast concrete bas-relief. this is not just an ordinary fireplace, it's monumental. and above it is a skylight that helps to illuminate the whole bas-relief and below. and also unusually, there is a pool for water. when you look at the living room and you start thinking about how it all comes together, how it's layered, how it's reiterated, it's not just the columns that support the frame of the room that show it. it's also reiterated in subtle yet very logical ways. when you look, for instance, at the cushions on the sofa, the embroidered pattern is an element of that hollyhock design. and with that, the windows all have elements of that.
2:19 am
work as an entire unit. that's really the story of hollyhock house-- this lush, romantic, folly that frank lloyd wright designed for aline barndall. i've worked here for a very long time now. and i still see new things, experience the house in new ways, and especially when i take people through it. that is part of the genius of frank lloyd wright, frankly. and that is the detail. it's been my pleasure to be your guide at hollyhock house. coming up next, we stick around in los angeles for a rare look at the ennis house.

welcome back. and now, we're taking a look at the ennis house, the largest or frank lloyd wright's los angeles area textile block houses that paid homage to mayan architecture. in fact, its distinct appearance led to its use as a location in several classic films, such as "day of the locust" and "blade runner." it was also reportedly one of the architect's favorites. hi, i'm tim gleason, curator of frank lloyd wright's ennis house, a masterpiece of american 20th century design. roughly 6,200 square feet, the main house
2:22 am
including the staff quarters across the motor court. come, let me show you around. frank lloyd wright had a very special soft spot for this house. he called it the "glendower opus." i think it was something that he always considered a great success. frank lloyd wright was always pushing the envelope. this house is a testament to that. the materials used, the expansive views, the shape of the exterior is like no other building. you have hints of modern mixed with hints of an ancient temple. textile blocks were made using the granite and the gravel from the site. so the house was part of the earth. it's an asymmetrical design. so the block can be moved to frame a window, to highlight a certain area, with plain blocks and the decorative blocks all working together to create a design within the design. here we are in the entryway-- low ceilings, tight space. his idea was to push you through here into the more public rooms. we would go up the stairs, and the whole house
2:23 am
here we are in the real soul of the house. the dining room is set four feet higher than the living room and is really the best vantage point in the whole house. the ennis's added more of the mayan flavor to the house with the fireplace surround, the chandeliers. it's hard to imagine having a bad meal in a room like this. now that we've spent time in the dining room, let's go down to the living room. here we are in the center of the house, the living room. it's anchored by a dynamic fireplace designed by blanche ostertag. she designed three fireplaces for frank lloyd wright. this is the only one still in existence. the glass mosaic sparkle all day long with the western light coming in from the windows. it's hard to ignore the views out the double doors onto the balcony. it's one of the best places on the house. now, let's walk down the losure to the master bedroom. the master bedroom anchors the far end of the house.
2:24 am
s mitered corner windows to enhance the view from the bed. it has a real warmth. it's anchored by a fireplace. you have a heavy timbered ceiling. and you have expansive views. the swimming pool is surrounded by the san gabriel mountains, pine trees, and textile blocks. walking around the house, there's really not a bad view, both of the house and the landscape. it's a real harmony between the house and its surroundings. you really feel a real part of nature. thank you for joining me on a tour of frank lloyd wright's ennis house. i hope you've enjoyed it as much as i have. up next, we have an inside look at the history of this place-- the guggenheim museum.
2:25 am
2:26 am
welcome back. new york's solomon r. guggenheim museum is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world and for the masterpieces that line its walls provides a truly unique viewing experience. now, megan fontanella, curator of collections and provenance, gives us some insight into the history and construction of frank lloyd wright's only new york city creation. megan fontanella: hi, i'm megan fontanella. i'm the curator of collections and provenance here at the solomon r. guggenheim museum. there frank lloyd wright building that now houses the guggenheim collection opened in 1959 here in new york. and it's now a landmark architectural gem.
2:27 am
to have this cylindrical building that was at the time called an inverted cupcake, a washing machine, you name it, it was such a different space for showing art. we're nestled here on central park. that was very much because of frank lloyd wright and this desire to match the bustle of the city that he could not escape with nature. in 1943, when frank lloyd wright was commissioned to be the architect for a permanent home for solomon r. guggenheim's collection, he was older in his career. he had already established this body of architecture of homes and buildings that were more in tune with nature, that were very much thoughtful about how space evolved within the home or the building. and our founding director, hilla rebay, must have seen something in his progressive architecture to write to him saying that she was looking for this fighter,
2:28 am
d build a temple of spirit for solomon r. guggenheim's collection. frank lloyd wright always envisioned that you would start at the top of the building and work your way down. these days, visitors have any number of ways to encounter the building. most start at the bottom. regardless, it's a really special place to view art with the oculus above-- this fantastic window that frank lloyd wright built. and everywhere you look, you see the circles and squares and triangles that are reflected in our founding collections. frank lloyd wright himself, unfortunately, died some months before the completion of his project. but he would have seen the germ of what it would become. and like anything, over the decades, it's come to become part of the fabric of new york city. we're always continuing that conversation about what it means to be new and original and dynamic, not just with our collection building but with architecture as well.
2:29 am
it's what international tourists come to see and what our local new yorkers embrace as their living legacy here in the city. coming up after the break, we're in chicago to view frank lloyd wright's very first independent commission.
2:30 am
2:31 am
welcome back. now, we're heading to the william winslow house in chicago. this home was frank lloyd wright's first independent commission. it highlights the early development of wright's design philosophy-- one that would change architecture forever. take a look. hi, i'm peter walker. this is the house i grew up in, frank lloyd wright's first independent commission called the winslow house. i'd like to show you around.
2:32 am
my parents bought it in 1958. we are the fifth owners. the winslows are the ones who originally commissioned the house from frank lloyd wright. that was in 1893. welcome to the library. again, sconces, hand-carved wood with very intricate bead work, and these miniature columns, which are a great touch. i've always liked the fact that this library is the reverse of ostentatious. more hand-painted murals, there are the four representing in a way the four tools of knowledge. now, i'd like to leave the library and take you into the music room, also known as the living room. so welcome to the music room, which is what was known as, when winslow lived here,
2:33 am
f the features of the rest of the house, it has the quarter sawn wood floors. it has this elegant wood trim that serves as a framing device around the walls. the sconce, as mentioned, designed by winslow. it has double hung windows. and there's a marvelous inglenook, where you can either perform as a musician or listen to musicians. so now, we're on the second floor of the house. this is the master bedroom suite. it's composed of three rooms-- the bedroom, a large dressing room, and a bathroom that still features a queen anne tub that was originally put in. it's, i think, eight or nine feet. it's a great soaking tub. the master bedroom itself are noted by their leaded glass windows, are the only windows in the house to feature any kind of color in the glass. it's a very thin border of sea green glass. it's just beautiful. when asked what's the most single most outstanding future of the winslow house,
2:34 am
it's been respected and preserved as a integral whole by not only my family but the four owners that preceded us. and with any luck, the house continues in that tradition. thank you for joining me on this tour of the winslow house. it's been a pleasure and a privilege. that's all for now. but we hope you enjoyed this look at the enduring legacy of master architect frank lloyd wright. and a special thank you to the solomon r. guggenheim museum. their newest exhibition is visionaries, creating a modern guggenheim, which you should definitely check out. now, if there's a unique property you want us to see or you just want to share your own decor ideas with us, just find us on twitter, instagram, or facebook at openhousetv. thanks for watching. and i'll see you next week.
