>> we are so going to miss him. i don't know too many that can walk and fit the shoes jim vance was an awesome anchor man. >> that's what a few of you are saying about our leader, our light, our vance. as you can probably imagine, it has been a tough afternoon. it's been a tough weekend for us here at news 4. by now you know vance passed away on saturday. he was 75. >> all this afternoon we'll be sharing some of our favorite vance stories with you and you'll be sharing some of yours with us, as well. >> vance never liked to make a fuss about himself. he believed in covering the news and doing it first. we'll bring you more about vance in just a moment. we're going to cover the news now. >> all right. we've got some breaking news to cover right now. this in maryland, we learned just a matter of moments ago eastern shore over thiegt.

shows damage, possibly even weeks to clean up. the national weather service says it was an ef 2 tornado with winds of up to 125 miles an hour. >> we are working for you with team coverage tonight. amelia draper is in the storm team 4 weather center. >> we'll go to derrick ward who is in the middle of the destruction on the eastern shore. derrick, wow, from what i see behind you. >> reporter: tell me about it. you might get something like this. this was the wind's design. this happened in no time. they went from almost finished to almost recognizable just like that, from the storm that blew through here early this morning. take a look at some of the pictures we've got, a house demolished. the homeowner crawled out from under the rubble. the roof of that house was in the backyard. and this other house was lifted off its foundation and dropped back down a few feet askew. massive trees were snapped and other structures lifted up and dropped back down into the

woods. ask anybody here who was here in stevensville when this storm started this morning. they'll tell you it was a tornado and national weather service says, too. ef2. it was loud and damaging. >> i've never heard of a tornado before. i've heard description of distinctly sound it makes and it really did sound like a train, and stuff started hitting the window and all. >> now, you're getting a bird's eye view from chopper 4 high above us here. you can get a sense of how wide a path this tornado struck through this town and the damage we did. we're starting to see our utility crews come through here. lots of contractors helping folks, a lot of people are without power. this is by no means over. by the light of day you're getting a good look of the devastation. i can tell you, this community has come together and miraculously there was only one minor

but the recovery and the financial impact, well, that has yet to be seen and it's going to be a while before this place gets back to its normal self again. stevensonville on ken island, derrick ward, news 4, back to you. >> what is so frightening about this tornado it hit as so many people were sleeping. >> most dangerous time when it happens in the middle of night. amelia draper is in the storm center right now. explain what an ef-2 tornado really means. >> it means we're seeing maximum sustained winds of 125 miles an hour, you're seeing some damage like you were there in derrick's video. you have the house actually lifted off of the foundation and moved a little bit. take a look here, national weather service did issue a tornado warning for this storm center and mount holly confirming this afternoon that there was, in fact, ef-2 tornado. it's hard to believe how much damage it was done in four

1:33. now, on the eastern shore, haven't seen a tornado and about 15 years, pretty unusual, for the timing. i have the radar loop here from about 1 to 2:00 a.m. and you can see, i circled here, stevensville area, a lot of lightning, very heavy rain fall, and, of course, a tornado moving throughout that time. i'm tracking some isolated areas of rain some thunderstorms back to the west, what that means for our evening here coming up in a little bit. here at the live desk we're following breaking news in arlington. police are on the scene at a home on north quantico street. this just off lee highway, a few blocks of the high school and the elementary school. investigators tell us both of the victims are adults and there's no greater threat to the

shamari stone is on his way to arlington right now. as he learns more, we'll keep you posted here and of course on our nbc washington app as well. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence, leon, back to you. >> thank you, chris. look now at today's top stories. florida truck driver faces the death penalty or life in prison. he was charged today with illegally transporting scores of immigrants, including children. the truck was found in texas. ten people inside of it died and investigators think there may have been 100 people in that truck at one point. it's not where the truck started its journey or where it was headed. terminally ill british baby may not live to see his first birthday next week. they're not dropping their legal bid to bring him to the united states for experimental treatment. that was a fight that was backed by the pope and by president trump. guard suffers from a rare genetic condition, he

breathe or move on his own. the window of opportunity to help him has passed. he is to be taken off life support this week. senior white house adviser told reporters he has done nothing wrong and he did not collude with russia during the election. kushner volunteered to be questioned by the senate intelligence committee today. he insisted his father-in-law won in september because he ran a better campaign than hillary clinton. now we get to talk about vance, icon, legend, true professional and original. >> since word spread, the out pouring of love and support and the memories that have been shared, the condolences that have been sent our way. it's been truly remarkable. >> it's been beautiful. the last couple of days have been tough for our news 4 family, of course for vance's family. and also for the dc community who has watched him deliver the news here on our station, since 1969. >> vance died on saturdayft

and while he's no longer with us physically, his legacy and his spirit and the memories we have of him will live on forever. >> we've got a lot of those memories to tell you about this evening. we'll start with prince georges county bureau chief tracee wilkins. she worked with vance a total 21 years, tracee. >> if you include when i was an intern and productive assistance, it's been a long time. i've got to tell you, i feel like the first time i met him and got to know him was here inside of my parents' house in prince georges county, growing up watching him on television. so when i joined the news 4 family and got to know him personally, i felt like i already knew him and today as we talk to people in prince georges county, we came across viewers who felt the same way. who felt like they knew vance after watching him for more than 40 years. they described him using words like cool, father figure, kind, funny, geus

a chance to hear from some of the people you don't get to see, the people who are behind the scenes here, our behind the scenes family that works every day to get us on tv. >> because of that they know him and knew him better than any. pat collins in the newsroom right now. he's got his own memories of vance here as long-time colleagues. >> leon, jim vance had an office here at channel 4. he never used it. he preferred his desk here in the newsroom. there's his picture and there's his computer. but don't even try and ask him for the password because he was sort of a pen and paper kind of guy. you know, putting on a tv news show is a real team effort. it's not just something that we put in the commercials. it's the way it really works. and vance knew that better than anybody. he would come in to this newsroom, walk around and talk to the people.

they weren't just colleagues and friends, they were family. and tonight, we want you to hear from some of vance's tv family. on vance, chester, news 4 camera man, 35 years. >> you had to be on your game because it was just expected that you weren't going to coast through this shoot. if he was out in the field, it meant something special and you had to do a little extra to work that day. >> on vance, perkins brassard, news 4 editor, 19 years. >> he had a way that he would walk into my edit room and, you know, barely any script, but it was all in his head and he knew exactly what he wanted to say and how he wanted the piece to come out. but he always had this charisma.

manager, nbc 4, 30 years. >> he was just a real personal person, right. he knew everybody. and he knew you. you know, he still remembered my kids' names, right, that's the kind of guys he was. >> on vance, patricia, news 4 producer, seven years. >> vance treated everybody like family. i've only been here for seven years and there are people that have known him for decades and he treated everybody the same. he threw a party for our pa who got our first reporter job. and everybody there, parents were there, and it was somebody who had only been at the station a couple of years. and somebody who he mentored and he does it a lot. >> he was a presence in this market. he was like the dc

just sent to the live desk, we're getting new numbers on how many people got sick. we told you about the health scare last week they revealed more than 135 people were reported getting sick after eating there two of them tested positive for the same strain of nurovirus. the out break has effected people who ate that chipotle between 13th and 16th. the restaurant shutdown for two days. chipotle has been giving away free food to try to win back its customers after out breaks of e. coli and nurovirus in 2015. wendy. >> we're working for you this afternoon. >> a local couple's vacation of a lifetime that was never meant to be and grieving widow who had to fight toet

>> i said, well now you're telling me this, all this time later. this is all just to get a refund for a hotel that you never stayed in. and how much money were we talking about. >> $802.96 cents. >> donna said she sent death certificate along with other documents. the wait continued, week after week, the company still had no answer after the refund. >> this is it. i'm going to contact news 4 and see if they can light a fire. >> we did. nbc 4 responds reached out to the company and asked them for an explanation. we got one. in a statement, the company that owns cheap o air said, in part, donna's cancellation should have been quickly approved under its compassion exception policy. it went on to say, this unfortunate event is in no way reflective of the company's normally teller customer service and values. on the same day, we contacted cheap o air, they called her to

[000:50:59;00] weather right there. that storm coming through. looking at the aftermath. and nothing like that. >> and amelia said, could be a good week later on. >> yeah, tomorrow and wednesday guys are looking gorgeous outside. here is the latest track, tracking some thunderstorms once again tonight, it's not going to be severe weather like we saw over the weekend, no threat of tornado. biggest concerns would be heavy rain and some gusty winds. you can see along the highway 66 and parts of prince william, fairfax county dealing with some heavy rain. this is really not moving all that much. and along the beltway and 95 dealing with showers as well having an impact on the evening commute in virginia. we look further to the north end and we're seeing some showers along the mason dixon line as well. temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s right now. 90 degrees in washington.

88 for those of you in manass as. when it's 65 degrees or lower, it's especially in our area in july, we get above 65, it starts to feel humid and above 70, just not comfortable outside. still pretty muggy, you can see here in washington up around baltimore and frederick, feeling a little bit more comfortable out there and tomorrow, well those dew points are going down below 65 in the low 60s. what does that mean, it means it will be comfortable. as we look to wednesday. still pretty low humidity, by thursday, we start to see the mugginess into the area, we'll be noticing the humidity and maybe isolated thunderstorm maybe thursday afternoon. no storms. no rain in the forecast for tomorrow. we are completely dry from start to finish, so make those outdoor plans, and we won't have to worry about a storm at all. 7:00 a.m. plenty of sunshine. 72 degrees at that point. by lunch we're around 80. high tomorrow of 85. about five degrees cooler than today. 7:00 tomorrow evening. looking great if you're heading
