east capitol street. we may have had something in the roadway. not necessarily an accident. v dot is aware and they're going to head to the scene to see if they can remove it quickly. jack, thank you. get ready for a busy day on capitol hill. the senate is set to vote to debate on a health care bill that could impact the way every american receives health coverage. >> also today, senator john mccain will return to capitol hill for the first time since revealing he has brain cancer. with mccain on the hill, senators can move forward n to debate on the health care bill. angie goff has more on the issues facing this bill before it hits the floor. >> aaron and eun, the first issue, it's a pretty big one. no one knows what senators are actually going to vote on. it could be the most recent version of the bill, it could be the updated version, a simple repeal or a kbip nation. a motion to start debate on any one of those options may not get en r

that would make it dead on arrival and that's the same roadblock republicans hit last week. senators are getting a lot of pressure from the white house now. president trump has warned if republicans do nothing. search years of repeal and replace to the voters. angie goff in the newsroom. thank you. good news about representative steve scalise and his recovery. he was shot in alexandria last month. yesterday he called in to the weekly republican bhip tewhip t meeting. he could go to a specialized facility soon. it's not clear when he will return to work. in northern virginia, a heartbreaking story involving a couple. they were found dead after an apparent murder-suicide. officers found the couple with multiple gunshot wounds inside a home on quantico street.

investigators don't know what led to the shooting. neighbors in a centreville neighborhood were able to rest easily after a standoff ended peacefully. chopper 4 captured the situation. man police say was responsible for the hours long standoff was wheeled to a waiting ambulance. earlier in the night a 12-year-old girl and a mother were released from the home. the mother was hurt in a domestic assault. the man's no, ma'am has not been released. but he's expected to face charges. someone shattered the window at the station in white -- they think someone shot the window with a bb gun or something similar. crews will be fixing a water main break southbound at brentwood drive. this is in upper marlboro. the road runs from route 301

angie goff at the live desk with this developing story as we take a live look from chopper 4 over the scene of this water main break in maryland that's going to be an all-day event. as we take a closer look. you can see the gaping hole in the asphalt in the ground. it looks pretty deep. big machinery in the ground. wssc crews working on south osborne road in upper marlboro. this portion of the road closed between brentwood and caraway. it's going to be like this through evening rush. some people, more tn

south towards east capitol street. south osborne road is closed west of 301 between brentwood road and carroll way. that's definitely a structural issue. they'll give you a live look at the roadway. 95 towards georgia avenue. we're indeed starting to get a slowdown. as you head past georgia avenue, the pace greatly increased. back to you. >> jack, thank you. it's 6:13. cleanup continues after a tornado tore through there. look at some of the damage here. >> we brought you this as breaking news yesterday morning. winds as strong as 125 miles per hour. not only ripped houses apart, but lifted some buildings off their foundations. this was the first tornado in that area in the stevensville area in 13 years. as you can see here, homes and businesses were no match for this storm. >> everything has got to be completely

yeah, it's amazing the debris field, i don't even know how far it goes back bo the woods. >> no one was killed in the storm. governor larry hogan has pledged state support to help with the cleanup. take a look at this. people returning to their homes after being evacuated in california because of the raging wildfires. in mariposa county, firefighters finally getting control of it. the detwiler fire which has destroyed more than 60 homes already and burned nearly 79,000 acres. it is 60% contained last check. so there are still evacuations in order for some people who live in that area. we know that more than 1,000 structures this morning still remain in the possible path of that fire. now back to you. this is the moment an 18-year-old california woman lost c

killed her younger sister. the entire crash was streamed live on instagram in a move that most of us can't imagine a woman continued recording after the crash. sanchez was drunk when she crashed the car and killed her 14-year-old sister. another 14-year-old was in the car and was injured in this video. sanchez walks up to her sister who was dying with her camera rolling and then tried to wake her up. the 18-year-old is charged with vehicular manslaughter and dui charges. just a horrific story. a 5-year-old boy drowned at a camp last week and his parents are opening up about his death. they're accusing the camp of negligence. this happened in georgia. his parents say he was allowed to slide down a waterfall but he couldn't swim. he was missing for 45 minutes. his mother says she never wants this to happen to

no one should feel as broken as i feel right now, as cheated as i feel right now. no one should ever have to go through this. >> the family says it intends to file a civil lawsuit. the georgia department of early care and learning is also investigating. it is 6:16. when you drop your kids off at daycare, you expect them to stay safe but now we're learning that a local toddler was abandoned at a mall. prince william county police say crystal lundy was in charge when a 2-year-old was left at a mall on monday. the boy was asleep in his stroller. he was left in the food court for an hour before the workers returned to get him. >> somebody else saw it. saw the kid and was like, oh, my god. >> leaving him in the mall, i mean, kidnapped. that's the first thing i t

somebody walking off with your kid. >> news 4 reached out to lundy, who is the director at ebenezer christian academy. we were asked to leave the property. lundy is out on bond while she waits for her next court appearance. members of congress are being sued for flying rainbow flags at their offices. it wants four democrats, including virginia representative don buyer to take the flags down. the lawsuit says the flag is a religious symbol and doesn't belong on capitol hill. representative susan davis responded saying it represents lgbtq pride. she also called the lawsuit hateful but said it won't stop the march toward equality. 17 after hour and nbc4's jim vance is being remembered as a d.c. icon and a trailblazer. >> he died after a brief battle with cancer and so many people have been sending in their love and their support and their fond memories of vance. everyone always sayst

aaron and eun back to you. >> here are the top stories we're following today. jared kushner will appear before the house intelligence committee under oath. the president's son-in-law spent the day fielding tough questions from the committee. this is fallout from a meeting kushner -- from an attorney linked to the kremlin. >> the congressman who was shot in alexandria is improving. steve scalise started his physical recovery process and could be released from the hospital soon. scalise was shot while practicing for the congressional baseball game last month. the shooter was killed. cleanup continues in queen anne's county after a tornado tore through there. we broke the story yesterday morning here. this was the first tornado in that area in 13 years. it was an ef-2. wind up to 125 miles an hour. the tornado was only on the ground for a couple of minutes. but you can see the massive amount of damage it

here's a look at how it all breaks down. it would call for a $15 an hour wage by the year 2020. it would be broken up into increments starting next year. but small businesses staffing 26 people and fewer, they would get more time having until the year 2022. now, this is basically our reworked version of the wage increase bill from january. this one, again, being introduced. that new version today -- also to a lot of people talking about this on social media really hoping to see how far this goes. back to you. all right, justin finch live in montgomery county for us today. just tip, thank you. a few more details on minimum wage in our area. d.c. lawmakers have already passed similar legislation, raising the city's hourly minimum wage to $15 by 2020. in prince george's county, the county minimum wage will go up to $1

virginia state minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. congress is considering a $15 federal minimum wage by 2024. the federal minimum wage hasn't gone up in eight years. montgomery county park officials have a warning for those head to go the lake. testing shows an elevated level of micro sistine in immediatewood as well as mark ber need frank. because of the chemical, visitors are asked to avoid direct contact with the water while boating or fishing. you're asked not to swim and to keep pets out of water. any food caught out of the lake is asked to be to be thoroughly washed. it turns out the students from burundi may have planned to leave. the school director says the teens probably left because they want a better life. but not to flee

sfor r senator john mccain is returning to d.c. he has an aggressive form of brain cancer. halle jackson explain why it's back on the floor. hey there, good morning to you. here in washington, it is going to be another incredibly busy day, particularly over on capitol hill. just down pennsylvania avenue from where we are. republican leadership is promising to hold a vote to start debate on a health care bill. there's a lot of questions involved in this, including what bill they'll be voting on and whether the motion to start the debate in the first place will have enough support to pass. this is the roadblock that stopped this whole process last week when republicans tried to do this in the snat originally. now, they're getting a big push from the president who is trying to use the power of bully pulpit to get them to repeal and replacba

for, molette. >> reporter: get ready for this. so many of you have felt the impact of this road upgrade for nearly a year. it's really good to be able to bring you relief as you can see the morning commuters coming along beach drive here. part of the stretch set to reopen in a matter of weeks. we're talking about the end of august. that is when we're going to see this stretch between rock creek parkway and till den street reopen. completely rebuilt road. wider and safer areas along the trail. new landscaping and new crosswalk leading up to the zoo. but there's a big but in this. because this is only phase one of three phases of this upgrade. now, construction, of course, set to continue as phase 2 really kicks in to gear. that's going to include the stretch of beach

tilden and military road. we have light at the end of a tunnel coming your way. >> thank you. there's a new proposal to limit punishment for people who ride metro. metro has something to say about this. in short, it's not happy. the d.c. proposal would reduce the fine for people who cheat the system. also not have to go to jail. they say police disproportion e disproportionately enforce the law. they say they have an obligation to make sure every rider pays his or her fair share. jack taylor is in for melissa mollet for a look at first 4 traffic. 32 eastbound we had delays passing 95. there had been activity near route 1. it did cause a bit of a slowdown. we had an update for the rail riders. grn
