rock creek at the kenld center, traffic going one direction at a time. 5:03. we are learning there's a local connection to the terrible human trafficking case in texas. one of ten people that died inside that tractor-trailer graduated from high school in fairfax county. his name is frank fuentes. he graduated in 2015. one of his friends on facebook said he was attending classes at northern virginia community college. "the washington post" first reported this story, says he was sneaking back into the u.s. after being deported to guatemala in march. according to the post, immigration officials say he was convicted of assault and battery and suspected of having gang ties. his friends posted online that he learned from his mistakes and was working on getting a degree. we will have more details coming up in a live report. late night shoppers in a close call with a police chase. it was all captured on chopper

this is near tyson's corner center before 9:00 last night. fairfax police tried to stop a speeding suv. the suspect vehicle crashed and flipped near the entrance. the driver suffered minor injuries, will face felony speeding charges. no officers were hurt. a deputy recovering from another crash that could have been worse. they say he was cut off by another driver on west ox road before 6:00. he is also the fairfax county former police chief. he is now out of the hospital. he was driving a county vehicle. the other driver faces charges for failing to yield. an update at the live desk. bladensburg police are investigating a shooting now. take a look at video at the scene overnight. you can see police on the ground on 57th avenue area near bladensburg high school. still working to find out what

more information on a suspect. stay with news4. we'll bring it at we get it. arn? >> thank you. five after the hour. d.c. man calls it unbelievable. watched a burglar break into his home and steal thousands of dollars of stuff and couldn't do anything to stop it. the homeowner watched the burglary in real time from his phone while at work. the security company alerted him to the break-in and called d.c. police. williams spoke to news4 about the helpless feeling of watching somebody violate his home. >> i spend so much time and working hard to buy a house and then having something like this, someone violating my home this way is just unbelievable. >> this all happened last monday at williams' home in wood crest heights neighborhood in southeast d.c. the suspected burglar tried to hide his face. it didn't work. we have his image on the nbc washington app. if you recognize the

d.c. police say the man got away with $15,000 in items, including a tv still in the box, an ipad, and tooth brush. a federal appeals court blocked a d.c. gun law that makes it difficult for gun owners to get conceal carry permits. yesterday, a three judge panel ruled a law that requires people show a reason to carry a weapon infringes on second amendment rights. the district has 30 days to file for a new hearing. meantime, current restrictions on carrying a handgun remain in effect. dramatic moment on the floor of the u.s. senate. senator john mccain returned to washington to cast a key vote in the health care fight. lawmakers from beat parties gave mccain a round of applause, days after being diagnosed with brain cancer, the senator was. this is where the show of unity ended really. hours after mccain cast a key vote to start debate on the health care bill, republi

failed to pass that bill that would have partially repealed and replaced the affordable care act. today they will try again. they're expected to vote on a plan to repeal it with delay on when it would take effect. it is unclear where the votes stand at this point, putting health care for millions in limbo. the russia investigation will be the subject of a senate judiciary committee hearing today. one key figure here will not be there. former trump campaign manager, chairman paul manafort. senate judiciary committee rescinded subpoena of manafort. the move came after manafort met yesterday morning with staff on another senate committee, and began handing over documents. at today's hearing, lawmakers are expected to raise questions about a meeting involving donald trump jr., manafort, jared kushner, and a russian attorney. today there could be problems in the air for travelers out there. if you have a flight, check before you go. it is going to be a big pro

records show his commercial driver's license was suspended in april. the owner of the truck company also denying involvement, says the tractor-trailer was sold to someone in mexico. her husband was brutally beaten to death. today, a wife and her lover will be sentenced for the murder. cecil brown was killed in august, 2014 in takoma park. his wife and her boyfriend were convicted after cell phone records helped close the case. investigators use cell phone data to link location on the day of the murder and text messages from the wife. they face up to 30 years in prison for second degree murder. the murder of a transgender woman say they finally have justice. prosecutors say in october of 2015, shot smith behind lake forest mall in gaithersburg.

argument. the case ended in a mistrial when it first went to court in january. now faces life in prison. sentencing set for october. virginia native, former dallas cowboy rodney lucky whied head was cleared in a shoplifting case. the man they arrested saturday for stealing in wood bridge is not whitehead. they say the suspect gave whitehead's date of birth and social security number. he is now wanted for not appearing in court. the agent for real whitehead always said it was a case of mistaken identity. he was released from the cowboys monday, the same day the arrest was made public. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes martin introduced a bill to extend the lease on rfk stadium campus. the bill would extend that lease to 2088. she says it would give officials enough time to redevelop the area with more green space and sports f

united. the team plans to move to the new audi field next year. major new study on dangers of football shows widespread evidence the sport can lead to brain disease. the journal of the american medical association looked at 202 players from the nfl, college and high school. chronic traumatic encephalopathy, better known as cte, can only be diagnosed examining the brain after death. cte was found in nearly 90% of brains studies. after years of denials, they acknowledged the link between repeated head blows and brain disease and settled lawsuits from former players. still, there's a lot to learn about how the disease has formed. >> so we don't know the prevalence among football players playing at the nfl level. the fact we found 110 positive cases out of

>> a woman in arlington heard noises in the middle of the night and police found a strange man living in the attic. angie goff has more on this story in the newsroom. bizarre. >> can you imagine, creepy is a better word to describe what happened to these two women. they say last friday morning they heard noises, they came from upstairs at the place they rent on 22nd street in arlington. the women called police, officers got there, they found there was a man in the attic along with a backpack, he had clothes and a bed. he pretty much had been living there it seemed. police believe he got into the house through a sliding glass door. one of the tenants spoke to news4, didn't want to be identified. >> i heard footsteps above me, i checked in with my landlord because sometimes people, he used the storage above in the past. of course it is creepy to hear someone is in your house. >> anthony

northeast d.c. a man was arrested yesterday, he and another man charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. police are looking for a third person. you can see that person in a white hat on surveillance video. the child's mother says the baby is recovering. 5:36. two out of six african teens that disappeared are safe. they confirm they're safe in canada. the six teens vanished after a robotics competition in d.c. last tuesday. officials believe the teens planned to leave. the other four teens are still missing. great news for all of you that plan to run or watch the marine corps marathon. organizers released a transportation plan yesterday. metro opens at 6:00 a.m., which is two hours early. organizers paying thousands of dollars to have the system open early for runners. last year you

from across the aisle. we're getting nothing done, my friends. we're getting nothing done. >> news4's tracie potts is live on capitol hill. is mccain's message resonating with fellow lawmakers? >> reporter: the tone of it, yes, getting something done, working together. democrats and republicans. but the substance when it comes down to the nitty-gritty details, not clear they can get that done. last night they tried to repeal and replace obamacare with a plan the senate has been working on, trying to come up with a compromise, appease moderates and conservatives, it failed. nine republicans voted against it. >> so what are the next steps for the senate? >> reporter: more back and forth about what they can do to make a health care plan work for the majority of senators, to get it passed, to get it on the president's desk. we understand they're going to try a vote on repealing obamacare and delaying

replacement. that doesn't seem to have enough support. when there's this idea of the skinny plan where they get rid of some parts of obamacare, the mandates, penalties, big parts like medicaid and subsidies flowing to families. >> thank you. here's proof those in power sometimes listen when people speak up. coast guard says boaters and fisherman can continue to use the potomac river near president trump's virginia golf course. for safety reasons am course. for safety reasons, a two mile section was off limits when the president visited the property. recreation groups complained the restrictions were unreasonable. now they said they need to stay on the maryland side when the president visits. virginia governor's race is the most closely watched statewide race this year, money is pouring into both sides. republican governors association is putting $2 million into gillespie's campaign, on top of previous $1 million donation.

lieutenant governor northam getting $1.5 million donation from democratic national committee. dnc gave him a million dollars last month. legal documents related to a wrongful death lawsuit against venus williams show she's denying allegations she contributed to the crash. the crash happened back on june 9th in palm beach gardens, florida, left a 78-year-old man dead. now the attorney for that man's family is speaking out with claims of new evidence. >> we believe the evidence from the black box download will demonstrate she was distracted and delayed in her reactions which ultimately caused this accident. >> find out more about the new claims and the lawsuit on the "today" show right after news4 today. it is 5:50. today, redskins players, coaches, and fans are down in richmond for training
