plus a horrible accident on a state fair ride kills one person and injuries more. we're following the breakdown details from the live desk. and a woman's dying wish granted by total strangers. her family ready to see her tonight for the first time in months. >> announcer: news4 at 11:00 starts now. good evening. first tonight, she did five tours in iraq and afghanistan. serving her country in three branches of the military. but mia mason is a transgender woman. >> now she's worried she'll lose her military benefits and pension all because of a tragic change in policy president trump announced this morning. in a series of tweets he said, our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption of transgender service members. he saidy

any capacity, after a year in which thousands began serving openly for the first time including mason. >> news4's meagan fitzgerald now with an interview you'll only see on news4. >> it is the majority of my life. >> reporter: mia mason served as michael. she did five tours in iraq and afghanistan and received several metals for her service. the biggest fight for her life, she says, was in 2010 when she began transitioning to female. the military eventually found out and she was discharged. when the ban on transgender service members was lifted in 2015, she was back. >> it's no longer an issue. you don't need to identify me as transgender anymore. you need to identify me as a woman. >> reporter: but today everything changed and president trump tweeted, saying transgender people are no longer allowed to serve. >> now i may be forced to lose all of my benefits, again. i may be forced

>> reporter: she's afraid of losing it all. >> taking thousands of people that are currently in uniform and kicking them out of the military is more disruptive than anything that any critic can say about allowing transgender service members. >> reporter: eric fanning is the former secretary of the army, appointed by president obama and the first openly gay man to hold that position. >> i don't believe that this will actually become policy and that the president will be able to succeed in kicking out these thousands of patriots. i think there will be a lot of resistance on the military side in the pentagon to the breadth of what he's proposing. >> reporter: secretary fanning says there's still so much confusion and uncertainty as to how the president's tweets will impact people like mia, which is why mia says she'll keep fighting. meagan fitzgerald, news4. it was just last year the military began allowing transgender service members to serve openly. until today, the pentagon was

branch to begin allowing transgender recruits for the first time. and how is this for coincidence? today marks 69 years since president harry truman signed an executive order officially desegregating the armed forces. protesters upset about the policy gathered outside the white house tonight, holding up signs condemning the president's announcement. we sat down with virginia senator tim kaine. he questioned whether the president consulted the military before making the change. >> the muslim ban, the travel ban, the transgender ban. if you meet the qualifications to serve, you should be able to serve. >> the president has a lot of support from all americans, and has voiced this is a very expensive and disruptive policy. >> a handful of republican lawmakers criticized the president's decision. but some conservative a

praised it. again, it's unclear what the ban will mean for currently serving transgender soldiers. leon harris here at the live desk. at least one person killed, several injured when a ride spun out of control at the ohio state fair. this was captured on cellphone video, but it's really too graphic for us to show you here. but here is a look at the fireball ride before the accident. some of the riders were thrown off of this ride on the fair's opening day in columbus. investigators say a row of seats on the ride, quote, just snapped off. seven people were hurt, most of them critically. the company that operates the ride says it swings riders 40 feet in the air while spinning them at 13 revolutions per minute. >> i just this is a terrible, terrible thing to happen on the first day. it's really a tragic thing for all of the rides. i'm -- you know, what can i say, except those poor people. >> governor john kasich has shut down all of the

has ordered a full investigation. we'll be following how things play out. jim, back to you. >> leon, thank you. new at 11:00 tonight, police tell us a woman tried to lure a little girl into a car telling the 9-year-old her mother was hurt and in the hospital. we're told the woman drove up to the girl near the intersection of meade drive and moore place in leesburg. she offered the girl a ride to the hospital. the girl told police she biked straight home but the woman followed her for a block or two. police believe the suspect is in her 20s and was driving a gray or silver four-door sedan. police just identified the man who was killed along with his dog on a popular bike trail in northeast d.c. this morning. his name was victor williams. he was 37 years old. witnesses heard a half dozen shots around 8:30 this morning. then police found williams and a dog shot to death on the anacostia river walk trail beneath the east capittr

bridge. they found a small dog that survived. sources told news4 investigators believe both dogs belonged to williams. they don't have a motive in the case quite yet. investigators also looking for clues to a double homicide that shocked a northern virginia community. ryan cross and gregory dennis found inside a running car in lorton early this morning. police tell us the two young men were shot execution style. the vehicle found stopped in the middle of the road. the doors were wide open. detectives are trying to figure out if this crime was drug-related. now to the maryland woman with a terminal illness, stuck thousands of miles from home in alaska. she's been fighting for weeks to it back to her kids and grandkids. tonight that long journey came to an end. news4's jacky benson is live at bwi thurgood marshall airport with the story. jackie? >> repr:

hearts. we have some video to show you that was taken just a short time ago from chopper 4. the images show the medevac flight with mrs. nancy greathouse on board, landing here at bwi airport. there was an ambulance waiting to take her on the next leg of what has been a very long journey. and her family is calling this a miracle. this picture shows 71-year-old nancy greathouse and her husband paul in the anchorage, alaska hospital room where they've been for a month. nancy, diagnosed with cancer two years ago, fell ill while the couple were on a cruise and was unable to afford a private medical flight back home to beltsville, maryland. ♪ praise the lord, praise the lord ♪ >> reporter: at church in

raised. authorities tell us christine parks was driving eastbound here in the westbound lanes near the bay bridge, going into annapolis early this morning. she crashed head-on into a car driven by hui xu. they both died on the scene. police tell us alcohol may have played a role. in may, two people were killed in a similar wreck. drivers tell us route 50 can be confusing. >> i'm not exactly sure if it's a flaw in the map. >> it's kind of scary because right around here, the exit to get onto 50 towards the bay bridge, kind of iffy. easy to take the wrong route. >> state police say an investigation after that may crash did not find any issues with signs in the area. the investigation into this morning's crash continues. now to a story that you'll only see on news4. the quick thinking of a dad from maryland saved the life of a stranger. tonight that dad

action. news4's darcy spencer now with his message. >> reporter: what were you thinking? >> uh, this only happens on tv. >> reporter: louie reyes is a real life hero, being credited with saving a man's life using his own automated external defibrillator. >> mr. reyes absolutely saved this man's life. >> reporter: louie reyes was driving on the university of maryland campus sunday when he heard screams. >> someone call 911, does anybody have a defibrillator. >> reporter: he pulled over, jumped out, grabbed the aed from the back of his suv and went to work. a man had collapsed to the ground. bystanders including a local e.r. doctor were performing cpr. >> begin by removing all clothing from the patient's chest. >> reporter: reyes hooked up the aed to the semi conscious man. it der

pulse. within 30 seconds, he was breathing and talking. within one minute, he was asking what's going on. >> reporter: reyes is being credited with saving the man's life. he says the man is improving at the hospital and thanked him for what he did. reyes had bought the device to protect his 10-year-old son who is a catcher on a baseball team. reyes was concerned if his son got hit in the chest with a fastball, he could need a shock from a defibrillator. reyes says he hopes his story inspires others to learn cpr and buy aeds. >> this proves that early access to cpr and early access to aed or defibrillators saves lives. >> reporter: prince georges county fire and rescue encourages residents to sign up on the pulse point app. if you're trained in cpr, you can find out where there is someone in need. you can also see where is the closest aed. to find out more,

currently temperatures are in the 70s across the area. it's mild and feeling a little muggy out there. 76 degrees in washington. we'll start out the day tomorrow with sunshine. clouds increase throughout the day. a mix of clouds and sun throughout the day with more clouds around for your thursday afternoon. 7:00 a.m., 72 degrees. by lunchtime we're in the mid-80s. that was our high temperature today. a high temperature tomorrow of 90 degrees. and you can see as we head on into the afternoon, but especially the evening hours, a few thunderstorms are possible, and 83 degrees at 7:00 p.m. the chance that you're dealing with the storm tomorrow, low, 30%. on friday that's going to increase to about 80%. and highs on friday around 86 with rain and storms at times. the rain could be heavy enough that could lead to some flooding concerns. friday, a likely storm team 4 weather alert. if you're heading to the beach or back to the mountains, the weather could certainly impact that drive out of town. future weather is very anemic with the storms

going to happen. 7:00 a.m., we have some cloudiness around. notice it's stopping at around lunch time, we're still dry across the area. late afternoon hours, 4:00 p.m., hit and miss showers and thunderstorms out there especially back around the mountains, maybe sneaking into fauquier, loudoun counties. some scattered thunderstorms potentially in the metro area and southern maryland as well. threat of storms really winds down then, as we head on into our friday morning. i think we do start out friday dry, but as we head on into the lunchtime hours, chance of showers already there. look at what happens friday afternoon. some pockets of heavy rain here with the bright colors on into the evening hours. this is when we're potentially picking up one to two inches of rainfall. there you see, saturday morning, 6:00 a.m., unfortunately some showers potentially in the forecast. we're going to continue to update the forecast. new information coming in, we'll be able to refine the timing with chuck and sheena. then i'll be in for doug again tomorrow night.
