recover. police only have a vague description of the suspect right now and the attack was unprovok unprovoked. megan mcgrath will have reaction from neighbors in about ten minutes. this is the third maim juror crime on a local trail in just days. on wednesday, police say a man and a dog were fatally shot on the anacostia riverwalk trail where it meets the bridge. no arrests have been made on these crimes. it can be scary. don't walk alone, especially in an isolated area. this includes trails, stairways, alleys and some elevators. if you feel you're being followed, turn around and actually look at the person and should you feel threatened, experts say yell fire instead of help. they say people are more likely to respond if you yell

now. >> the motion passes. >> after two years of debate jeb stuart high school in fairfax county had get a new name. if you have the nbc washington app, you saw this alert on your phone last night. the big question now is what will the school be called and who will decide? >> justin finch is outside the high school with how remaining process will work out. justin? >> reporter: erika, good morning. the name should change within two years. there is a chance that it could be called just stuart high minus the jeb or it could be called something else. this was a very close 7-2 vote that came down just before midnight at a fairfax middle school last night. in the end, a fairfax school board did hear comments from the public. the name does not reflect its diverse student body.

say that jeb stuart is a knock to virginia southern heritage. very soon the naming process is set to begin. though it's very clear that not all are on board. >> my understanding is that we've decided to change the name. there's going to be a -- >> my daughter liked jeb stuart high school. it was great for her. now she can't even say she graduated from jeb stuart high school. >> reporter: and as you hear, this issue is a passionate one for those from jeb stuart high. >> justin, you mentioned that stuart. just stuart might be the new name without the jeb part of it. what would that change? >> reporter: that was an interesting twist here. a compromise of sorts. a motion that would say, hey maybe we can just call the school stuart high. remove the jeb, the stigma.

may not clear the public. they will have input on the issue and a round of meetings set to start soon on the renaming of jeb stuart high. that is the latest here in falls church. i'm justin finch. news 4. back to the studio. >> justin, thanks. we're following a developing story this morning. an 18-year-old woman in critical condition after a shooting in fredericksburg just before 9:00 last night. officers received reports of gunshots on tyler street, not far from dixon park if you're familiar with that area. police say when they arrived, they found the woman was shot in the head. police have not released any suspect information but ask anybody that knows about this to call police immediately. this man behind bars in connection with a stabbing at a home in woodbridge. prince william county police say he is facing several charges for the violent assault. take a look. chopper 4 over the home on east longview drive yesterday as police and firefighters arrive. ofer

for the stabbing. when they arrived, they found the house on fire. they rushed in to save a woman and two children. the woman who was stabbed was rushed to the hospital. the kids are okay. three officers had to go to hospital for smoke inhalation. at least one has been released. staying on top of breaking news out of spain. scary video just in of a commuter train that crashed. you can see people being treated in the train station in barcelona. 50 were hurt. this happened while people were going to work in the morning there. the train slammed into the buffers in the station. 18 were taken to the hospital and five in serious condition. back to you. he's kept himself under control pretty well. this might be four in a row! >> see ya

66 west. back to you. now to a developing story. a northern virginia community is concerned about its safety. >> a woman says she was stabbed walking to a metro station on this trail. megan mcgrath is live in fairfax county with the latest on this. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. the entrance to this path is just behind me here on the other side of the crosswalk. in a few hours, police will be returning to the scene of the crime and handing out these flyers. they're looking for witnesses who saw yesterday's attack. anyone with information that could help them find the person who was responsible. now, this is a popular trail used by a lot of folks here. it's immediately adjacent to baby drive, not far from the vienna metro station. a 21-year-old woman was walking on the path at 7:30 thursday morning when a man came from behind her. poliay

the man who was hit was okay. he was acquitted on a charge of misconduct in office. he faces ten years in prison. there has been a pretty significant spike in crime in a popular area near the georgetown waterfront. most crimes have been nonviolent. they've reported break-ins and car thefts. folks who frequent that area say more could be done to stop crime. >> the city could do better with the lighting. so light draws away things like that. >> d.c. police tell news 4 that they've increased patrols in that area and working with u.s. park police to address the ongoing problem. we're staying on top of these wildfires burning up in canada. now we can tell you they're growing and even more people are having to evacuate their homes. one of the fires in british columbia is near a main road. that's one of more than 100 es

more changes to charles county public schools after a worker was accused of sexually abusing students. >> molette green has details on this story. >> these charles county -- reeling from the sexual assault allegations. they are getting some help. the entire school community to recognize sexual harassment. they're hosting one of these sessions. called an information night tonight. there's one set for august 16th. now, parents of stoddard students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades if september along with the parents of children who were promoted to high school received a letter about the sessions back in july. july 5th. earlier in the month. former employee, carlos bell is accused of sexually assaulting students and producing child pornography. again, that meeting is set for tonight at 7:00. there's one you can put on your calendar set for august 16th. that is the l

molette, thank you. it is 5:35 now. the ohio state fair will be open this weekend, but no one can get on any of the rides. this is because investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a deadly malfunction. on wednesday, part of the fireball ride broke off, throwing people into the air. an 18-year-old marine recruit was killed. several others were seriously hurt as well. inspectors went over the fireball ride three to four times in recent days and didn't find any issues. it passed inspection hours before the tragedy. news four i-team reports that an another park's fireball has been suspended as a precaution. hundreds of new jobs may be headed to the area. the planning board gave the green light to a new top golf facility at national harbor. it's a popular sports entertainment venue. the plan means that the current top golf in alexandria would be relocated to national harbor. the company says the move will bring a lot of new jobs to

flat in a dramatic early morning vote in the senate. edward lawrence is here now to walk us through how this happened. edward? >> erika, it was supposed to be a victory for republicans going through in the senate. it ended up being defeated this bill. 49-51. vice president mike pence was on stand by to cast the deciding vote. they felt they had 50 vote. it ended up being john mccain in dramatic fashion holding out his hand and turning his thumbs down. the vote is still down. cheers were heard outside the capitol. they ended up hearing the news and cheering expressing their pleasure with this. >> edward, now that the latest version of this bill has failed, what's next here? >> it's back to the drawing board. it seems for republicans. they've tried twice now to get it through the senate. the president trying to desperately get a win on his alleged agenda going through congress. still, not able to

the rain chances developing and eventually coming our way. nothing heavy out there now. the heaviest of the rain will come in later on in the day. probably after 3:00 or 4:00. future weather, hit and miss showers after lunchtime. after 2:00 or 3:00, heavier rain sets up. by we get towards 7:00, 8:00 in the evening, pockets of heavy rain are likely. rainfall amounts will be copious. we're looking for, again, 1 to 2 inches on average. there will be some places we could get 4, 5 inches or more. here's a quick peek at the forecast. rain doesn't end until late saturday night or early sunday morning. sunday afternoon and monday will be nice. then we have a couple of days to finally dry things back out. let's go over to jack taylor at wtop and happy tgif to you. >> and to you as well. virginia drivers on 66 headed west leaving the beltway. sorry. we've got activity out near nutley in the vienna metro. tw

something occurred with a couple tractor-trailers. not sure if there was debris struck but there's a lot of equipment on scene. at this point, two left lanes are getting by. abrupt slowdown leaving 495. connectivity in service roadway. that's got one right lane getting by. things are better in springfield. 95 northbound. up in the express lanes. fairfax county fairway. it's been contained not shoulder. volume is still pretty light. the delays have nicely eased. which one is yours? are you okay? where is the other person? this morning, we're getting a look at new police body cam video. it shows police responding to the fatal accident involving tennis star venus williams back in june. >> williams drove into an intersection where the two cars collided. she's been cleared of any criminal charges. the family of a 78-year-old man who later died from the injuries has filed a

williams. she's worth an estimated $75 million. only spoken once about the accident. her family says it's not enough. they want admission of guilt and an apology. 5:56 right now. this problem could put police officers in danger. more than a million ford explorers are part of an investigation into leaking carbon monoxide. the national highway traffic safety administration is hine behind the investigation. 41 people have been sickened and thousands complained much exhaust leaks in the suv. the investigation affects ford explorers from 2011 through 2017. hundreds of police departments use ford explorer. apple has the green light to move forward building its flagship store in d.c. apple and events d.c. have finalized at carnegie library at mt. vernon
