loneliness and the isolation and the un-american attitude that it caused all of that. in august, 1942, 10,000 japanese-americans from the west coast were shipped to a remote, barren concentration camp, that's what it was, in north-central wyoming. heart mountain. it was a shocking change from the lives they left behind. norman mineta, california congressman later and transportation secretary under president bush, was 10 years old when the signs went up. >> you see a big placard and it says, instructions to all those of japanese ancestry. >> reporter: housing was crude in wyoming. stifling hot in the summer. bitterly cold in the winter. the wind was relentless. towers with armed guards. wartime

paint a false picture. >> they're not prisoners. they're dislocated people. >> reporter: after they arrived, the inmates, that's what they were, began to organize gardens and schools. but they also began to resist. the young men were drafted in the army from the camp. imagine that. a number were unwilling to fight if their country would not free their families. and so, many did hard time in prison. raymond uno, now 83 and a retired judge, cannot forget one night soon after his family arrived. his father, clarence, an american citizen, and world war i veteran, went to a uso meeting. >> he came home and never woke up. he died a prisoner of war for the united states governor that he served in world war i. dane in

entrepreneur, fishes a river his mother could only look at. his father sent to a camp in california, so the family's fishing fleet confiscated by the government. and no reason given. >> i am bitter. i am bitter. that legacy was lost. it's really my generation, who are obviously a little more ticked off about it. >> reporter: shirley is the child of a heart mountain family, making sure the world does not forget what executive order 9066 did to thousands of families. >> every time i come to this place and i see the photographs of my parents, i do start crying. it's very difficult. >> reporter: that is heart mountain in the ground, for which this camp was named. what an irony. heart mountain. in fact, this was an outrage. but it was also the beginning of a lifelong friendship. al simpson,

wyoming senator, came here as a boy scout from nearby cody and met norm mineta, another boy scout. >> there was barbed wire, guard towers, guys in the towers with a search light and a gun and a uniform. why would you want to come here? >> reporter: and the two have not stopped talking since. an enduring friendship. >> our friendship went back as if we were sitting in that tent, 1943. >> reporter: despite the painful memories, heart mountain, in its own way, called its people home this past weekend. families gathered to honor the sacrifices made and to bear witness. >> we've wor >> we've worked hard, we've survived, but now our story is here to tell others so it doesn't happen again. >> and not only that, but young men of draft age were drafted out of the camp and sent to war. there is an amazing new book out called "just americans" about the
