bramp branches down. >> chopper 4 showing long delays as traffic was forced to squeeze by on the shoulder in laurel. national night out interrupted by sudden downpours in our area. people forced to run for cover. and underground, way underground. news4 gets a look at work metro is doing to stop the leaks during these strong storms. we'll get to metro in a moment. but first, let's go to doug. >> with all the rain that we've had, doesn't take much for trees to come down and streams to start coming up. >> no, it doesn't. when you take into account what we saw not just last week but during july, the ground definitely saturated, some areas last week, over seven inches of rain, today, some of the same locations, one to two inches. this goes back six hours, nothing going on. but right around the i-95 corridor, through the

one of the worst possible times to get storms like this, that's where we saw them and expect them tomorrow. right through parts of northwest, here's the sligo creek area where we saw a lot of the damage with the trees down. you can see some of the hail around tacoma park, too. that moved through fairly quickly. we saw severe thunderstorm warnings. now things are calm and will stay that way through tonight and most of tomorrow. humidity increasing over the next couple of days. better chance of storms tomorrow. i'll break that down for you. and then tracking that weekend forecast. if you have plans, we have that forecast for you. >> thank you, doug. well night wet nights like can cause major problems for metro's wet line. >> that water leaks down through the tunnels, leading to track fires. news4 got a look inside these tunnels four years ago. now metro is trying to fix th

situation, and we're back underground to see if they're making progress. >> reporter: take a look for yourself. this is what metro has been dealing with for a long time here, inside some of the tunnels between the medical center and the friendship heights station. the water literally just comes down, because these tunnels are beneath the water table. so when it rains, all that pressure just pushes down in here. metro says it has been doing a good job plugging some of the holes. you see some of the spray paint. they are brilling into the concrete to put a polymer substance in there, and it basically protects the entire tunnel from the water that's coming down. but a lot of these places continue to leak water like this one. but metro says it is making a difference. we'll continue to follow this story and make sure you stay with us tonight and tomorrow for updates on this issue. back to you. >> still got a ways to go, thanks, adam.

allegations that president trump encouraged fox news to run a story about the murder of seth rich. the lawyer who filed the suit over fox now says he wants to get the president under oath. yahoo news is reporting the attorney wants the president and former press secretary sean spicer to submit to depositions. we told you about this lawsuit this afternoon, filed on behalf of ron wheeler, he says fox news hired him to investigate rich's murder and then intentionally misquoted him in a story suggesting that rich leaked e-mails from the dnc to wikileaks. that story was later retracted by fox. wheeler claims that president trump urged fox to run that story to divert attention from the russia attention. the white house is denying any advanced knowledge of the story. d.c. police say they believe rich was killed during an attempted robbery. a teenager detained after opening the emergency exit door on this plane and jumping out

this is a san francisco international airport, the copa airlines flight had just arrived from panama city, waiting to taxi to its gate when the 17-year-old boy opened the emergency exit, jumped out and took off running. a construction crew stopped him. he's now under psychiatric evaluation. nobody was hurt in all this, and no other flights were affected. police across the entire d.c. area were out in full force tonight to build bridges person to person with the people they protect and serve. news4's shemari stone joins with us a look at the national night out event tonight. >> reporter: the people i spoke to in d.c., maryland and virginia say the police officers did a good job of reaching out to the community, getting to know the people who they serve. >> this is great. good music, good people. >> reporter: we sat down with marvin muhammad in prince

george's county. he brought his 17-year-old son ahmed to meet police officers. >> there is no real community without police officers. we need them. there needs to be order. >> reporter: the goal of national night out is to improve police community relation, and highlight crime prevention efforts. >> law enforcement are not apart from, they are a part of the community. i'm not from someplace else. so i grew up in prince george's county, and i want people to come to events like national night out and get to know us. >> reporter: in d.c., national night out comes after a violent weekend. three people died, others hurt in 11 shootings. another man was stabbed to death. the mayor of d.c. acknowledged it was a tough weekend. >> what i will tell them is our police department is vigilant, all the way from the chief down to the lieutenants and the officers who are walking the beat. we ask that our community continue to work with them so that we

crimes. we no that's important. >> reporter: he says it's important to have more community policing to help stop crime. >> it's a very good thing. policing should be all about the community. if you're not in the community, you can't do a good job serving the people that's there. >> reporter: despite the violence that occurred this past weekend, the mayor says she's seen a decrease in -- 26% decrease in violent crime and 10% decrease in homicide compared to last year. i'm shomari stone, news4. >> thank you. on a night when communities across the country are trying to improve their relationships with police, the head of the drug enforcement administration is pushing back on the president's comments last week about police use of force. >> you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you see them thrown in, rough. i said please don't be too nice. >> in a memo

told nearly 9,000 agents and staff to disregard the president's comments that condoned police misconduct. chuck rosenberg went on to say agents must always act honorably. the white house dismissed those comments today saying the president was just joking. in atlanta today, attorney general jeff sessions promised to prosecute officers who use excessive force. an update now to a story you saw first on news4. a confederate flag license plate causing rift between several firefighters in montgomery county. one says allegations against him are false. >> in a controlled manner, and i was met with jokes and laughter by my supervisor, and i didn't feel like that was

>> the fire department is investigating. in the meantime, four petitions for protective orders against him were filed. the judge has denied one and the other three will go before a judge tomorrow. the u.s. department of veterans affairs has fired the head of d.c.'s medical v.a. center. brian hawkins was in charge wen investigators found supply shortages, unsanitary conditions in storage areas, and a cockroach investatifestation in areas. tonight, the v.a. officially fired him. still, problems haven't cleared up at the northwest washington hospital. this summer, the i-team revealed a patient's body went undiscovered in a parking lot outside for two days. a virginia father is sentenced to life without parole for the murder of his son. prosecutors say that he wanted to collect on the life insurance. he had taken out more than

months before killing his son, prince, in manassas in 2012. the boy was just 15 months old when he died. today, prince's mother called him a pathetic excuse for a human. a church camp kons lcounsel under arrest for soliciting sex from a child. he used snap chat to send the camper lewd photos and solicit sex. they met in sterling, and the pictures were sent last year after camp was over. the child reported hearns when he returned to camp this summer and learned that hearns was still a counselor there. the camp director said all camp and church families have been notified now. next at 11:00, forced to cancel a flight because of emergency surgery, this woman finds out her tickets were nonrefundable. susan hogan fights to get her money b

ocean city police are waiting on the autopsy report of a woman found buried on the beach monday morning. the report will provide them some more answers, but the death appears to be an accident. the woman was 30 years old from plano, texas. police say that she was here vacationing with her parents and are now investigating the possibility that she may have fallen asleep on the bea

tractors. tonight, nbc 4 responds to your complaints about nonrefundable airline tickets. you may not realize when you opt for cheaper airfare, it comes with restrictions. susan hogan is working with you with what you should know before you book your next flight. >> reporter: when we purchase an airline ticket, we are always looking for the cheapest fare. but sometimes you may not realize you have chose a nonrefundable flight. what happened to a damascus woman may have you looking twice at the fine print. mary has been suffering from crohn's disease for 25 years, so when she started to feel a little better, she decided to book a trip. >> i've never been to denver. it was on our bucket list of things to do. >> reporter: so she and her husband booked a flight. but not long after, her health began to deteriorate. >>

i was hospitalized. >> reporter: so they had to cancel the trip and asked for a refund. >> i told them i'm in the hospital. i cannot fly. i don't know how long i'm going to be in the hospital. i need a major surgery. >> reporter: that's when mary realized she purchased nonrefundable tickets. but she says it's not clear. >> what does nonref mean? why doesn't it say that? i had no idea. >> reporter: and united stuck to its policy, nonrefundable means just that. even with a hospital note. so why do airlines offer nonrefundable tickets in the first place? the industry's advocacy group, airlines for america, tells us nonrefundable fares offer more affordable travel options, help reduce passenger no-shows and avoid the cost of a seat when a reservation is canceled.

but if they did name it capital one, wouldn't people be confused and think it was names after the caps? >> the cap center. >> why not? >> so we going to dry out tomorrow? >> i think same forecast today -- or tomorrow as today. highs in the high 80s, low 90s. and some people have a better chance of getting the storms. today's storms would be most likely along the i-95 corridor and that's where they were. that's going to be the case again tomorrow. so tomorrow's rush like tonight's evening rush. we saw highs of 91 in the city, second day in a row with temperatures above 90 in the city. 91 in lorton. 92 in warrenton. frederick came in with 88 degrees with

currently, sitting at 78 degrees with winds out of the south at 3 miles per hour, clouds moving over head. it's going to be a very nice start to the day. 72 gaithersburg, 74 in fredericksburg. a nice, comfortable night. it feels a little more humid, but still pretty good. any of the rain we saw earlier has come to an end. not looking at any rain in our area overnight. most of tomorrow, just like today, most of tomorrow will stay dry. you can see what happened here. watch the storms develop. most of the region, all of northern virginia, southern maryland, staying on the dry side today. most of us are dry. back to the west, tracking a little system. a little stint back here, this is what i'm watching that will come through tomorrow. that's going to help bring us a few more showers and thunderstorms. we've been talking about emily, who came on shore.

now it's a depression, making its way out to sea. the tail has a lot of moisture associated with it. down around miami, miami beach today, seven inches of rain at miami beach. take a look at this video. you think gridlock? flooded roadways for sure. i saw upwards of four feet of water in some of the roadways there around the miami beach area. it was just nasty down there. tons and tons of cars continue to be flooded out. this is a major, major issue down there in miami. they continue to see more and more of these flooding events. this one happened around high tide and that's why that happened in that area. emily, by the way, going to continue to move out to sea. not going to be any impact for us. the chance for storms, not tomorrow morning, but here we are, notice around 2:00, i-95 corridor again, a couple of showers and thunderstorms. tomorrow afternoon, a little more coverage in parts of northern virginia. most of us do remain on the dry side. next
