but strong. it was hot and humid yesterday, most of the area saw sunshine, maybe partly cloudy skies. take a look at the storm in frederick. i looked it up on the radar. this is yesterday afternoon, very strong thunderstorms. you see lightning, heavy rain. obviously had a damaging wind. i am going to zoom out so you can see what the rest of the area saw at 2:00 p.m. that was really the only thunderstorm at the time. we ended up seeing another small thunderstorm around washington area in and around arlington. but really most of the area stayed dry. heat and humidity caused a strong storm to pop up around 2:00 p.m. today could see the same thing. most of the area stays dry, but a few isolated storms. temperatures in the mid to low 70s. some areas like in the 60s. we have breaking news out of prince george's county. another major problem if

the road is shut downright now in the northbound lanes at palmer road. southbound, one lane is open. there was a motorcycle crash. we learned that the driver died. wtop jack handler watching it closely. you can follow fi traffic on twitter for updates throughout the morning. don't be surprised if you see people out cleaning up their yards this morning. look at that mess out there. maybe even a few road crews clearing a lot of debris after a series of storms flooded roads, downed trees, and power lines were everywhere. chopper 4 spotted a tree down across both lanes of the parkway, forcing traffic to squeeze by on the shoulder there in

and the weather, you could see it again today. that could cause major problems for a section of metro's red line. water gets into the tunnels between medical center and friendship heights cause track fires. news4 got this exclusive inside look at the tunnels three years ago. now they're trying to fix the leaks. and now they're back underground to see if crews are making progress. >> reporter: take a look. this is what metro is dealing with here, inside tunnels between medical center and friendship heights station. water literally comes down because these tunnels are beneath the water table. whenever it rains, all that pressure pushes in here. metro says it has been doing a good job plugging some holes. you see the spray paint. they're drilling into the concrete, put a poll mer solution that meshes with the

orders for three firefighters. they say they need protection from a fellow firefighter. this is a story you're only going to see here on news4 first. this all started last month when confederate flag license plate caused a confrontation between first responders. he is accused of making violent threats to co-workers. the crew says allegations are false. >> i spoke my mind in a controlled manner, i was met with jokes and laughter by my supervisors. other firefighters. i didn't feel like that was appropriate. >> the fire department is now investigating. meantime, a judge denied one of the protective orders. on this nomination, the yea 92, nays 105. >> the president has a new fbi director. they

not the way michaela young wants to spend the last days of summer, but she's going into seventh grade at eisenhower middle school in laurel. that means it is time for more immunizations. her dad brought her to a free clinic at largo medical center. >> something i didn't have to pay out of pocket for. >> reporter: the prince george's county school district is partnering with kaiser permanente to offer free immunizations to students because more than 6,000 students in the district didn't have the required vaccination nations on the first day of school last year. >> we're making a big push to make sure every student has proper vaccinations and ready to go on day one. >> reporter: he specializes in infectious disease, says kids not getting vaccines creates health risks for all students. he says many families in prince george's county not getting routine immunizations don't have health insurance. >>

it is hard to believe that police officer there walked away from that crash. dash camera video, capturing that moment a suspected drunk driver slammed into an officer in texas. here it goes again. this happened last month. wow. he said in that moment his training as an officer and marine kicked in and forced him back on his feet. >> next thing i knew, i was flying through the air. felt like i was spinning through a washing machine from all my training, whether from the marine corps or through the academy, worst thing to do is be down

good morning, jack. >> good morning. we start the morning with breaking news in fort washington on 210 northbound, a crash just after palmer road has the northbound lanes of 210 blocked and all travel diverted onto palmer road. you need to plan ahead, this will cause early, big delays. this is an on-going investigation. southbound is not effected. virginia, 95 northbound after lorton. volume is light. two work zones on rock creek parkway. first one at the kennedy center. they're also working on north of virginia avenue left lane gets by each direction. back to you. don't be surprised if you see people out cleaning up yards, maybe even road crews clearing debris after a series of storms that
