>> reporter: this family is absolutely traumatized. the grandfather told me he has no noidea who the suspects are who forced their way inside the apartment. orlando lives in the apartment with his wife, daughter, daughter's husband and 7-year-old son. police believe the family was targeted because orlando's daughter works at a check cashing business. it was a night so terrifying that orlando has a hard time holding back tears. he says it all started with a knock on the door around 9:00 last night. orlando says he was sleeping along with his wife in one bedroom, his son-in-law and 7-year-old grand son in the room next door when orlando opened the door he says three men rushed inside before two more suspects followed. he says the suspects tied him up but his son-in-law was badly beaten and stabbed. la

elegant in the past. developing now, one person is dead, another missing after an explosion at a school in minneapolis. a section of the building just gone. investigators believe the contractors caused a natural gas leak while working on the building and that likely set off the explosion this morning. officials say all the students and staff are safe and accounted for. back home everyone had the same question when plans for a new fbi headquarters were cancelled what happens now? lawmakers are trying to figure that out, too. here is what we learned from a hearing. the fbi is still expected to get a new state-of-the-art location for headquarters but it may take another five to seven years. the same three locations are still in play. there are two in prince george's county and one in springfield, virginia. the money set aside in past year's congressional budgets will be saved a

it happened this morning on rhode island avenue between 14th and 15th northwest. d.c. fire and ems teams pulled the worker out of the hole. we are told the person has serious injuries. we don't know what the worker was doing just before the fall. a car went out of control at a busy time of day and crashed into a building. this happened along jefferson davis highway near the target. two people in the car were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. police are investigating what went wrong. new clues about the death of a vacationer in ocean city, maryland. the story generated a lot of interest. leon harris is here with the latest on the investigation. do we know more toonnight? >> police say that the 30-year-old woman from plano, texas died of suffocation after walking on to the beach

ashley o'connor was in maryland but they got separated around 2:00 in the morning. her family contacted police and four hours later her body was found. she was buried with just an arm showing above the sand. the two big questions is did she fall into the hole or did she climb in? and how did that hole get there in the first place? police say they don't know how deep it was but they say the hole was significant. it is possible that she was run over by one of the tractors that comb the beach. her death ruled an accident. tracking a couple of storms out there. storm team 4 radar. we have a couple in parts of our region. a new severe thunderstorm warning this one around the annapolis area. if you are thinking about heading out and have family members driving out you might want to give them a call. this is right over the

severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 6:45. other storms formed are back to the west. a lot of lightning here, too. this one getting bigger just to the north of bethesda around the white flint area and back towards portions of river road. heads up, these are also developing. more just to the north. a fight over a confederate flag causing a rift between firefighters who work side by side in bethesda. this case ended up in court and pat collins tells us how it all ended. >> reporter: idris debruhl is a montgomery county firefighter. some of his fellow firefighters say they are scared of him. in fact, they went to court today to ask a judge to give them some protection, but the judge said that's not happening. >> i'm not going to have any comment, sir.

the outcome? >> no comment. >> reporter: this goes back to a day last month at the bethesda firehouse. debruhl saw a confederate flag license plate on one of the firefighter's trucks and he got mad. they say his veins started popping and started yelling and calling firefighters cowards and racists. they say he told them you think you have guns, i have more guns than you. i'll end this. debruhl admits to the name calling but says he never made gun threats. the judge in the case, williams, he said debruhl's behavior that day was way out of line and embarrassi embarrassing. he says he does thingt debruhl will do something like this again. the firefighters are not happy about the ruling. >> i guess we can only continue on and try to move forward. >> reporter: the

behavior here. he described this has an awful mess. pat collins, news 4. now to a plan to help you spend less time in traffic. what's not to like about that? >> we love that. too much time we do. d.c. is tweaking timing on hundreds of traffic signals to improve the flow. mark segraves is in the four by four cruising around northwest d.c. the signals there were retimed last year. do the changes seem to be working? >> reporter: well, d-dot says they are working. we are on wisconsin avenue headed out. let me give you a look at what we are looking at. last year the lights here along wisconsin avenue and other arteries were retimed to keep traffic flowing but as you can there are other things that play factors. we are stopped even though we have a green light ahead of us. traffic always wins. we can tell you this i

strategy. it started five years ago in 2012 the district has 1,650 intersections controlled by traffic signals across the city. this newest phase, final phase will address 384 of those intersections in northeast and southeast quadrants. district government says they reached their goal of recalibrating all of these signals. the 1,600 signals city wide. the cost for all of this, $3,500 per intersection. they say it is worth it. they say for every dollar they spend on reducing time in traffic it saves them $45. they also say it has reduced travel time for commuters 13% to 16% and it has reduced number of times you had to stop your car at a traffic light by 8% to 23%. they are also working on pedestrian signals, as well, those do not cross walk signals and bus travel. that has been

an update on the condition of an airport worker involved in this frightening lightning strike in florida. you can see the lightning hit the tail of a plane and travel and then knock over the worker standing near the nose. this happened a couple of weeks ago. today we learned the worker has just been released from the hospital. 21-year-old austin dunn suffered serious burns to his body but he is recovering and his family says it is a miracle he is alive. >> it's a miracle. now to a story you will only see here on news 4. >> water leaks along the red line are starting to cause big delays for your ride. work is in full swing to fix those leaks but as we found out it's not

a $15 minimum wage could mean 47,000 lost jobs and $41 million in lost income tax revenue, the bad news from the study looking at impact of raising minimum wage in montgomery county. $15 an hour would cut down on poverty and stress and increase mental health and morale. the study was commissioned. in january vetoed a bill raising minimum wage to $15 by 2020. now county council is working on a new minimum wage bill. amazon should have about
