what police say they were after when they tied up a family overnight. and we've heard about burns from cell phones before, but cell phone cases? tonight we're seeing the injuries involved in a bizarre recall. good evening. we begin with a horrifying scene tonight in northern virginia. a mother and her two children allegedly held prisoner in their own home for years. >> the father of those two children now behind bars. we just learned of the arrest late today, but spotsylvania county deputies arrested kareem moore on saturday. jackie benson just talked to one of his neighbors. wait until you hear what he had to say. >> reporter: this house is just off a busy road but it's not near any other homes. take a look. every single window and door is covered over with some type of blanket or other covering to keep people

see inside, to keep them from being able to see what was going on here. >> i have never seen that lady or those kids since they moved into that house, and that was before last summer because the grass was really tall. >> reporter: a nearby resident who asked not to be identified said kariem mohammad moore seemed intent on keeping people away from the house in the 6700 block of mines road in frederic fredericksen. >> i saw her walk but i've never seen her since then. i assumed he was living there by himself. >> reporter: deputies were called to the home on saturday to check on the welfare of the family. moore was reluctant to welcome them into the home, and while they were speaking out front, a woman and two children aged 8 and 11 ran out a side door. the man who is believed t

the father of the children held them captive in their own home, refusing to allow them to leave for two years. he's been charged with multiple counts of abduction, felony assault and battery. > >> reporter: real estate records show moore was not the owner of this home but it's unclear whether or not he was renting it. jackie benson, news4. a family held against their will for 12 hours on manchester road in silver spring here. apparently as part of a robbery plot. and tonight those suspects are still out there. only news4 talked to the victims in this case and our shamari stone is live with the latest on this investigation. shamari? >> well, right now montgomery county police are searching for these five suspects. this family was absolutely horrified. they are still shaken up tonight. police tell us that they were targeted because one of the family members works at a check cashing store.

horrific night inside his silver spring apartment. >> translator: last night what happened was some people came into our home to rob us. >> reporter: orlando said he and his wife were sleeping. his son-in-law and 7-year-old grandson were in another bedroom. they suddenly heard a knock at the front door and then five men tricked their way inside. >> translator: they got in by telling me they wanted to paint the apartment. once inside, they proceeded to tie our hands, blindfold us and gag us. >> reporter: the terrifying ordeal lasted for nearly 12 hours. the suspects beat and stabbed the son-in-law while the 7-year-old slept. a few hours later, orlando's daughter came home from work at the check cashing business. they also tied her up and gagged her overnight. >> this was a horrific crime. it could have been a lot more serious. >> translator: on wednesday morning, orlando tells us the men stole his son-in-law's car, took the daughter to the check cashing business but were unabl

head. >> remember that song? the message from the furious five. tonight nathaniel glover known as kid creole is under arrest for murder. police in new york say he stabbed a homeless man multiple times, killing him. investigators say the attack happened in midtown manhattan just before midnight last night. detectives say they have glover on surveillance video and it appears the men got into some kind of argument moments before that stabbing. glover now charged with second dealing murder which carries a sentence of life in prison. tonight police were out canvassing the area again where a woman was stabbed on a trail in northern virginia. fairfax county police are asking questions and searching for clues. the woman was attacked at random a week ago tomorrow. she was walking along the jerry connelly cross country trail toward the vienna metro station about 7:30 in the morning. state leaders say a maryland cancer charity is a sham

they're ordering the group to stop asking for donations. we can cer-vive was accused of fraud by the state attorney general. they say they used false advertising and claimed it was a non-profit. at last check, the atlanta-based organization was still accepting donations on its website. we reached out to them for comment tonight. we're still waiting to hear back. turning to our weather now and a beautiful night out there tonight but some more pop-up storms possible tomorrow. >> doug, it's been kind of a copy and paste weather week so far? >> exactly. pretty much the same area that saw storms today saw them yesterday, and i think that will be the case tomorrow as well. most storms lining up along the i-95 corridor, but everybody dealing with the heat. high temperature today. once again at least 90 degrees so we did hit our heat wave today with three days in a row

right now a few storms around baltimore. and take a look around winchester and the martinsburg region, also around hagerstown. don't be surprised to see lightning in that area. i'll take you hour by hour. see you back in a minute. >> thank you, doug. this is a road you might recognize even if you've never driven on it. we showed you video of indian head highway in prince georges county dozens of times. sadly it's often to report a deadly crash. this morning a man from maryland was killed here. police say he ran a red light on his motorcycle and crashed into another car. his death the fifth on this road this year. aaa says indian head highway, also known as route 210, is definitely in the running for the most dangerous road in the entire dmv. we got some numbers from the agency today. 20 people have died on the road in the past four years. four of the 20 people

accidents happen. it's a long, flat nature of the highway that aaa says leads to aggressive, reckless driving. police say they're devoting time and resources to stop that behavior. they set up this dui checkpoint just a couple weeks ago the night after two men died in a wrong-way crash here. here is the view from chopper 4. officers tell us they're on track to make twice as many stops this year compared to 2016. more reaction tonight to president trump's enthusiastic support for a bill that limits legal immigration. at the white house today, the president endorsed a plan from two gop senators that would prioritize english-speaking immigrants who are highly skilled and can help grow the economy. if put into effect, that bill would slash legal immigration in half over the next 10 years. the overhaul would make the system more merit-based. >> i do think

dead. we're looking to see if that victim is the janitor. one person we know is dead is ruth berg. she was working at the school for 22 years. she recently got engaged. contractors were working on the building at the time and caused some sort of gas leak and they believe that explosion was set off by that, and that caused the floors of the building to pancake and all collapse to the basement. witnesses say there was a warning to evacuate that went out just seconds before the blast, and we do know there was some children in another part of that building. tonight most of the nine people who were hurt have been released from the hospital, and we're told that one person is still in critical condition. we'll continue to monitor this situation and bring you the latest as we get it here. i'm leon harris. doreen, back to you. >> thank you, leon. the justice department says it does not have broad plans to investigate whether university admission policies discriminate against white students based on race. this comes after a job pos

course on affirmative action. civil rights organizations fear it will lead to legal action against universities for not admitting white students over minorities with similar qualifications. >> from each other in a university setting, and so if everyone is the same and if everyone comes from a like background, then what are we learning from each other? >> the justice department released a statement saying in part it's committed to protecting all americans from all forms of illegal race-based discrimination. committee leaders in madison, oregon are talking about changes after eight drivers hit people in the street last june. three d.c. police officers were hurt in that collision. last night a road commission heard a proposal to close eighth street to all traffic during certain hours when there is a lot of pedestrian traffic in the bars and restaurants there. another plan would designate certain areas where u

passengers. it's not clear yet if or when either plan would take effect. some iphone cases that contain liquid glitter are under recall tonight after reports the liquid can leak out and burn your skin. this recall involves 263,000 liquid glitter mobile phone cases sold in the u.s. they're made by mixbin electronics for the iphone 6, 6s and 7. there are 24 reports worldwide of skin irritation or chemical burns including 19 in the u.s. the cases were sold through amazon. bendell, mixbin and victoria's secret stores from october 2015 to june of this year. here's a couple stories you'll hear about tomorrow. the president is traveling to west virginia and it doesn't look like everyone is excited to see him there. someone vandalized the arena in huntington where the

so much. right now looking pretty good. we saw a high temperature of 9 on toda 0 today. most of you, if you're thinking about taking a late night walk or you have to walk the dog one last time, really looking quite nice across the region. temperatures mostly in the low 70s. 71 degrees right now in gaithersburg, 76 in manain mana. 73 degrees at 7:00 a.m. 76 by 8:00 and by 9:00, that's really starting to get warm. it will be a humid morning but really quite nice and maybe a little warmer than it has been the last couple mornings. we're still tracking a couple thunderstorms. baltimore still seeing a couple. look back toward the west. we have areas toward winchester and hagerstown. if you're in and around winchester in the

area, or if you're in sh sheperdstown, you'll see storms in the area. there are a few in loudoun county. most of those should be dying off. as for the little boundary trying to move on through here, most of these will stay to the north. tomorrow i think we stay to the north again. if you're south of d.c., not much chance of storms. north of d.c., a little bit better chance but not a big chance. here's 2:00. storms yesterday and today fired up right here. tomorrow they're going to fire up right here again around baltimore and maybe into montgomery county and then back towards the mountains. in the afternoon they stay along the i-95 corridor and back toward the blue ridge around i-81, so i think a good chance of staying dry and rather hot tomorrow because it will be hot. high temperatures the next couple of days. notice 88 martinsburg

i'm sherrie burrous here in richmond with the redskins training camp. today was an easier day for most of the players. the focus was on special teams and we'll get to that in a minute. but something that stands out with this redskins defense is the connection with two players in particular. d.j. swearen signed with the team and this reu nighnites him his high school teammate from greenvil greenville, south carolina. the two of them won a state title together. both even played college football in the state of south carolina just over two hours away. now 11 years later, norman playing a role in getting his former teammate to d.c. >> we always wanted to be here, anyway. that was the easy part. the free agency
