"news4 today" continues right now at 5:00 a.m. "news4 today" begins with breaking news. that breaking news coming out of the district this morning. a firefighter seriously injured in an accident at the scene of a house fire. >> d.c. fire and rescue are investigating whether the firefighter was hit by another fire truck. he is now in critical condition. this happened as crews responded to a house fire on f street northeast. that's in the h street corridor neighborhood. we'll have the latest on that situation. good morning everyone. i'm eun yang. >> i'm aaron gilchrist. as you've been sleeping, we've been working to find out the latest about that breaking news. justin finch at the scene of the fire. adam tuss is at the hospital where that firefighter was taken. >> first, we want to give you a quick check on your weather and traffic. sheena parveen is outside with the forecast. sheego

happen here in a few minutes. we know that he's a 28-year-old member of the d.c. fire and ems department. take a look here at med star washington center. we've got firefighters and personnel coming out here. we're expecting a news conference to happen any minute now. again, this all happening on f street in northeast d.c. last night. that person, that firefighter in serious -- was seriously hurt and in critical condition. any minute now, again, you can see the fire personnel here stepping up to our microphone. we're about to have a press conference and briefing. we've had fire response teams here all morning giving us kind of coming in and out and showing their respect for one of their comrades who was hurt here. let's take a minute here, get a briefing from d.c. fire and ems and hear what they have to say about all of this. >>

thank you for coming out on such short notice. my name is rashad young am i'm the city administrator for the district of columbiament i'm joined by fire and emergency medical services department members, including assistant chief baker, assistant chief donely, assistant chief mills, the president of local 36, daphne hudson. last night our fire and emergency medical services department responded to a house fire on the 800 block of f street northeast, during which firefighter dane smothers jr. of engine company 3 sustained very serious injury. firefighter smothers remains in critical condition at this time in med star washington hospital center and we join his family and fellow firefighters in awaiting more informa

there is an ongoing investigation in this case. it's been a busy night for the district and it reminds us of the bravery and dedication of our first responders. through the night, they've continued beyond the call of duty to stand watch over firefighter smothers and his family. we owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. i ask for your thoughts and prayers for he, his family and fellow firefighters. we'll do all we can to assist them during this very difficult time. also want to thank the outstanding medical team, the doctors and nurses who are attending to firefighter smothers who are working very hard to manage his care. at this time, assistant chief baker will come forward with more information about this incident. chief? >> good morning. at 11:30 p.m. last night our units were dispatched to a house fire in the 800 block of f street northeast. when

probationary firefighter duane smothers of engine company 3 was critically injured when he was struck by another fire vehicle arriving at about the same time. firefighter smothers had dismounted the vehicle he was riding and preparing hose lines and other equipment to attack the fire. firefighter smothers' injuries are serious and he's in critical condition. our thoughts and prayers are with firefighter smothers and his family, that includes his uncle who is also a d.c. firefighter and responded to this incident as well. we're also working to make sure that we're taking care of our members that were on the scene and were deeply affected by this incident. it's being investigated in coordination with the major crash unit. >> we'll take any questions. >> was this a fire truck that hit him or suv? can you explain? >> it was another fire truck. it was a ladder truck. >> a ladder truck. >> was it going at a high rate of speed? >> they were slowing and entering into t

[ inaudible question ] when they arrived at the scene, any -- [ inaudible question [ inaudible question ]. >> obviously the incident under investigation. but there's no indication at this time that there was any specific protocol that was not followed. >> you guys respond to a lot of these fires. what are the emotions of it being one of your own that's injured? >> it's clearly a tough situation to be in. we had a house that was heavily involved on the first floor with attached exposures on either end and our members, while at the same time caring for a member critically injured was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the attached dwellings up and down the block. so they did a heck of a job under extremely

back to you. >> adam tuss, live on the scene for us at med star washington hospital center. adam, thank you. there were three fires. you can see on the map where each one was. it stretched from the heart of d.c. to the maryland state line. we're working for you with video of the fires. in northwest d.c., a house fire sent one firefighter to the hospital. that firefighter is expected to be okay. flames broke out in the basement of a home around 1:00 this morning. that fire is now out. in northeast d.c., two d.c. police officers are among four people hurt at a fire there. flames broke out at a home on buchanan street after 12:30 this morning. another person is in serious condition. d.c. fire says that fire is now under control. if you are heading out the door, we'll keep you updated on these developing stories. we'll be tweeting out details as we work during that news conference. we're updating the story i

5:10 right now. a woman told deputies she and her two children were held captive inside a home by their children's father. news 4 was the only news organization at this home in spotsylvania county. the woman said they were trapped there for two years. the windows all covered up to keep anyone from seeing inside. it was a busy road. but not many homes. one neighbor spoke to us but didn't want to show her face. >> i have never seen that lady or those kids since they moved into the house and that was before last summer because the grass was really tall. >> deputies arrested moore, the children's father. they charged him with multiple counts of abduction, felony assault and battery. montgomery county police are searching for a group of five men who held a family hostage for 12 hours and robbed them. the terrifying ordeal happened late tuesday into wednesd

a grandfather who asked to be identified only as orlando. he spoke to news 4 about what happened. he says he thinks his daughter's job at a check cashing business is the reason why his family was targeted. he plaxexplains what happened. >> translator: they got in, said they wanted to paint the apartment. they proceeded to tie our hands, blindfold and gag us. >> orlando says the intruders then took his daughter to her work and tried to rob the business. an alarm wept off and they fled. her husband was stabbed in the neck. he's expected to be okay. through all of this, the couple's 7-year-old was sleeping. new this morning, another ride scare at a county fair. three riders rescued when they got stuck high above the ground. what happened and what it took to get them

fin to track breaking news this morning. these are pictures from med star washington hospital. these are scenes from the fire right now. after a firefighter was critically injured after being hit by a fire ladder truck responding to the scene. >> now you see the live pictures of med star washington hospital center. this happened on f street in northeast d.c. we learned that the firefighter is 28-year-old dane smothers jr. of engine 3 in capitol hill. he just got out of surgery. he is in critical kchblt updates for you throughout the morning. developing right now, we know two people died when part of a school went up in flames. investigators in minneapolis say contractors working on the school caused a

yesterday. there was an explosion. the school's receptionist and a janitor were killed. students and teachers inside the school said they had seconds to get out before the blast. seven people are still in the hospital this morning. some in critical condition. in fairfax county, police will be back at a popular trail looking for answers. officers will be in the area near vey den drive, not far from the vienna metro station after a woman was randomly attacked along the trail last week. just hours ago, the earth shook and a lot of people felt it in oklahoma overnight. it wasn't a massive earthquake. measuring 4.4. just before 10:00 last night. but it was widely felt. a big part of northern oklahoma city of a suburb lost electricity but they turned the lights back on in the last few hours. the police received hundreds of calls but n

i'm molette green at the live desk. >> molette, thank you. it is 5:17. today a massachusetts woman will be sentenced for her role in her boyfriend's suicide. michelle carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in june. this was in the case -- the 2014 death of conrad roy iii. an 18-year-old found dead of carbon monoxide in his pickup truck. prosecutors say text messages show carter encouraged him to take his own life. carter is facing up to 20 years behind bars. it's been five years and police are still actively trying to find the man who kidnapped baseball legend cal ripken jr.'s mother. they put out this new sketch of the suspect. it accounts for age progression. the man would be in his mid to late 40s. she was blindfolded and kidnapped in 2012. they found her the next day but never found the man who

>> reporter: eun, good morning. 809 f street northeast is where the fire department was responding at the time this happened. take a look here. that's row home is where they were responding to. it had heavy smoke. the remains of which you can still see. in that response came another chaej. firefighter dane smothers jr. was struck by a passing fire vehicle as he arrived here to the scene. a scene that we saw once we arrived over here to 8th and f. over there is where that ladder truck was standing at the time behind crime tape. it appeared that vehicle was involved in this accident here. now, at this time we know that smothers was suffering what appeared to be serious injuries above his waist. again, this happened amid a fire response here to the 800 block late last night close to midnight. this was a two-alarm house fire in the end and realizing smothers was struck, firefighters here on scene had a difficult and delicate

engine company number 3 out of surgery this morning at med star washington hospital center. this is a live picture from -- this is now a live picture from the hospital as you said. critical condition now. injuries suffered above the waist. d.c. fire says a ladder truck hit smothers as he got out of his truck to prep hose lines for that row house blaze in the 800 block of f street. one of three fires overnight. firefighters are asking this morning for prayers at this time for this young man. we have learned that his uncle also a d.c. firefighter responded to that same blaze in that community. we can tell you that d.c. fire and d.c. police investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident and we heard earlier from fire officials that no protocols apparently were broken. but of course they have to follow through with an investigation. we have team coverage at the hospital, a crew there and also at the scene t

d.c. live reports coming up. back to you. >> molette, thank you. it is 14 before the hour right now. president trump is backing a controversial plan to overhaul the u.s. immigration system. >> it's a plan that some in his own party aren't ready to get behind. tracie potts is live on capitol hill. tracie what, will the plan do and what are the critics saying about this? >> some of the critics are from his own party, like lindsey graham o who say part of plan is fine but the other part severely limiting green cards could devastate the economy. this is a plan that comes from capitol hill. a couple of republican lawmakers working on it since february. announced at the white house with the president's backing. it would change the immigration system by setting up a points system and applicants would get points if they speak english, if they have high tech skills, if they are educated. to some degree it would be based on age. they're trying to get more skilled workers into t

country, which means low-skilled workers would be pushed to the back of that line in terms of legal immigration. that's the concern that, by severely limiting green cards and pushing a lot of those workers who now work in our restaurants and on farms and construction and hotels, a lot of those workers would not be coming into the you state. it would create a drain on the labor pool and drive employers to illegal immigrants. that's the concern. they put it out there. we'll see where it goes. but at this point, the president is backing it. we can hear more about that in west virginia at a rally tonight. >> more from that later this evening. tracie potts live on capitol hill for us. tracie, thank you. the immigration debate is heating up in our own backyard as activists are voicing frustration with the white house. this is over the deportation to el salvador of two brothers. diego
