adam? >> reporter: eun, this is obviously a very serious situation that's going on here this morning. 28-year-old dane smothers jr. who had been on -- with the d.c. fire and ems as a probationary officer. was getting off of his fire truck when he was struck by another fire truck. where he just came out of surgery and is said to be in critical condition. obviously members of d.c. fire and ems here to show their support. but this has been developing situation since last night. want to show you live pictures of the scene here of that house fire that happened last night on f street in northeast d.c. obviously, it was a serious situation as multiple people responded. we have video of the fire truck that struck dane smothers jr. as he was getting ready to battle that fire. now, we're told that he was wearing his proper fire gear, which means that he would have had some reflti

that gear on. not sure why he was struck by that truck. dane smothers jr., 28-year-old member of the force is here in just out of surgery. we did hear from d.c. ems and fire this morning. >> he was riding, preparing hose lines and other equipment to attack the fire. >> firefighter smothers' injuries are serious. critical condition. our thoughts and prayers are with firefighter smothers and his family, including his uncle, who is a d.c. firefighter who responded to the incident as well. >> firefighter smothers as part of engine 3. s awe hear from d.c. fire and ems, obviously concerned. the driver of the truck that struck him has been getting counseling this morning. as you can imagine that person shaken up. continue to monitor the condition of the firefighter here outside of med star washington hospital center this

morning. back to you. >> adam, can you tell us any more about the firefighter who was injured? >> reporter: so, he actually comes from a line of firefighters in his family. his uncle was actually there on the scene preparing to battle the same exact blaze as him last night. we're told that he was a probationary officer, which means he had just gotten started with d.c. fire and ems. he had been out in the field for three months. so that's what we know about this 28-year-old dane smothers jr. unfortunately, we're dealing with a pretty serious and tragic situation this morning. his injuries are said to be above the waist and he's out of surgery right now. again, in critical condition, guys. a lot of thoughts and prayers with him this morning. >> for sure. adam tuss live at med star hospital. thank you. there were injuries in the two other overnight fires we mentioned a few moments ago in northeast d.c. two police officers are among four people hurt at a fire there. flames broke out of this home on buchanan street after

saturday, deputies went to the home for a welfare check. he was reluck tapt to let them inside the home. as they were talking, a woman and two children ran outside. they hadn't been allowed outside in two years. neighbors who didn't want to be identified said something about that house seemed unusual >> i have never seen that lady or those kids since they moved into that house and that was before last summer because the grass was really calm. >> moore will be arraigned on monday. the woman is being treated at a medical facility and the kids are staying with family members. there could be radical changes for traffic in one neighborhood. they want to improve safety. last month the advisory neighborhood commission heard multiple proposals. one would competely close 18th street to traffic during certain hours. another plan would

that school explosion in minneapolis was the janitor of the school. crews pulled the body from the rubble. the other victim was identified as the school's receptionist who worked there for 17 years. contractors working on the building caused a natural gas leak yesterday. students and teachers inside the school say they had seconds to get out before the blast. my daughter got up and was getting ready to leave out of the counselor's office and was blown back into the office by the explosion. it was seconds after they told everybody to get out that the explosion happened. seven people are still in the hospital this morning. doctors say their injuries range from serious to critical. the story's-trending on facebook this morning. the naacp issuing a travel advisory for minorities heading to missouri. the organization says their civil rights may be in danger. this comes after missouri's governor signed april new bill into law

dane smothers jr. and we now have a picture of him. take a look. we know he's 28 years old, a probationary firefighter. only serving a matter of months. on scene, we saw something else. a ladder truck. we later learned that smothers was truck by a fire ladder truck and apparently having jumped off a fire vehicle as that ladder truck rounded a corner. all this as fire crews responded to a two-alarm fire. smothers was taken to med star washington where fellow firefighters and loved ones have gathered. smothers himself is from a line, a family of firefighters. >> our thoughts and prayers are with firefighter smothers and his family. his uncle was here also who responded to this incident as well. >> we know at this point he's in critical condition having just undergone

live at the scene the fire and accident. >> reporter: aaron, that's right. the first look at the row house fire at f street northeast. then came that accident. a firefighter injured dane smothers jr. hit by a passing fire vehicle feet from the fire that he was here to fight. on scene, we did notice a ladder truck behind yellow tape. we later learned on scene that smothers was struck by a d.c. fire ladder truck in an apparent accident. fire and police remain on scene around that truck. apparently smothers was coming off of a fire vehicle as that ladder truck rounded a corner. that's when he was truck. this was all happening as fire crews continued to respond to this two-alarm fire. we spoke to a neighbor who lives next door to that fire. >> that's just awful. to find out that someone got hurt in the line of duty. but iy
