today will be a busy day at the white house before president trump takes off for new jersey to start his vacation. he'll be spending the next 17 days at his golf club there on the president's agenda meeting with the vice president and speaking to french president manuel macron. the president is dealing with and talking about the expanding russia investigation. special counsel robert mueller is using a grand jury in d.c. as part of an investigation into potential collusion between the trump campaign and russia. legal experts call the grand jury the next logical step in any investigation. the "wall street journal" reported this first. nbc news has not independently verified the report. coming up, tracie potts will explain what the grand jury will be looking at and who they expect to hear from. we'll discuss the leaked phone call transcripts between other heads of state. in virginia, an alarming story about how dro

a stafford county sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was accidentally exposed to a dangerous opioid. deputy a.c. wofford was investigating a case involving these two people here. david chambers and samantha stout. detectives say they were found with illegal drugs inside a van at the goddard school parking lot yesterday morning. they say the deputy handled fentanyl when he was collecting evidence inside the van and became ill. just touching the drug can result in overdose. staff gave him narcan to reverse the effects. the deputy is expected to be okay. when the new school year starts next month in montgomery county, all public schools, even elementary schools, will stock narcan. head to the nbc washington app to see chris gordon's story on why this life-saving drug is being stocked in schools. this morning, we're learning about the outpouring o

its firefighters was critically injured. we brought you this story as breaking news yesterday morning. dane smothers jr. was hit late wednesday night by a ladder truck arriving at the scene of a fire on f street northeast. his two uncles also serve in the d.c. fire department and one of them was responding to that same fire. >> he was ready to make sure that his family was proud of him. it makes everyone closer when you experience a traumatic event like that. >> smothers was preparing hose lines and other equipment when he was pinned between two trucks. among the people reaching out to help engine 3, capital police which delivered pizza to the firehouse. metro is expecting a major closure going into effect on the green line. they will be closed for two weeks starting tomorrow. shuttle buses will run from naylor road. t

welcome back. 4:40. now to a story we've been following closely for you. carbon monoxide leaks in police suvs are causing concern around the country. >> now it's hit our area. montgomery county police are inspecting their entire fleet of ford explorers. so far, none of the county's suvs has test the positive for carbon monoxide incompetent side the cabin but the vast majority have cracks in the engine and have to be repaired. ford says the problem with with modifications made for police use. if you have an explorer at home, it shouldn't be impacted. we check with other police agencies in the area and they are aware of the issue. so far, no reports of problems. the grocery store near your house actually adds to the value. the analysis of new data may surprise you. you're better

permanente against a doctor. dr. brian williams worked as an anesthesiologist at kensington and largo from 2010 until he was dismissed in 2014. his license was suspended in 2016 after investigation by the maryland board of physicians. several women came forward saying he inappropriately touched them. a criminal investigation is still ongoing. in montgomery county, a judge puts the brakes on pesticide bans. it would prohibit the use of pesticides on private lawns starting next year. the council wanted to limit the overuse of pesticides harmful to people, animals and the environment. the circuit court judge says it preempts the county's ban. the county will review the options including a possible appeal. big news from west point involving a fairfax county woman. simona skew will become the firstfr
