clinton's 33,000 deleted e-mails. >> reporter: nbc news has not independently confirmed the existence of the grand jury. president trump's point person on russia says his legal team hasn't been made aware of a grand jury, stressing the white house favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of mueller's work fairly and with congress threatening two bipartisan bills to prevent the president from firing mueller his legal team offered this reassurance. >> the president is not thinking about firing bob mueller. this speculation that's out there is just incorrect. >> reporter: grand jury's are a powerful tool for prosecutors which can include subpoenas for evidence, documents and even witnesses and they can stretch out for months or even years. a former senior intelligence official with knowledge of the discussions says mueller is looking at whether the president may have obstructed justice. other sources say that may include any financial links to russia, something mr. trump has repeatedly denied. in west virginia dismissing the

lighting up the night sky over dubai. the massive fire starting on the 63rd floor of the 86-story apartment building. its name, torch tower. the fire broke out around 1:00 a.m., of the 1,100-foot skyscrap skyscraper. as residents began running for their lives, burning debris could be seen crashing to the ground. firefighters battling the blaze. this is the same tower that was devastated in 2013. the building's cladding, made of aluminum panels with combustible cores helped accelerate the flames. that cladding, similar in a material used in the grenfell tower in west london, and blamed for that blaze in june. as

massive skyscraper caught fire, not once, but twice, residents are grateful to have gotten out alive. and this morning, the dubai media office says firefighters from four stations helped all of the residents evacuate. no one from the building or on the ground was hurt. that cladding has been banned for new builds in dubai. older buildings like the torch tower, are supposed to replace it. >> that could have been so much worse. there is there is new reaction this morning to the prison sentence given to the massachusetts woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter for using text messages to urge her boyfriend to take his own life. morgan radford has the latest there. good morning. >> reporter: this morning michelle carter wakes up a free woman as her case goes through the appeals process. some members of the victim's family have said that the 15 montha

light, but the prosecutors who fought to put her behind bars say they're happy and this is justice. this morning outrage over the sentencing of michelle carter. the 20-year-old given a two and a half year term for involuntary manslaughter after urging her boyfriend, conrad roy, to commit suicide. >> two and a half years in the bristol county house of correction. >> reporter: but much of her sentence will be suspended ordered to serve just 15 months in prison. she remains free pending an appeal. state prosecutors say justice has been served. >> are you happy? is there anything you would have done differently? >> no, michelle carter has convicted for the death of conrad roy, we are grateful not only for the ruling, but also for the roy family. >> reporter: outside the court some members of the victim's family were furious. you wanted to see her walk out of here --? in cuffs. why not. this girl is going to the prom and disne

at the time of the crime carter was 17 and capable of rehabilitation. >> children before the court charged with crimes are to be treated as children. >> reporter: the ruling capping a day where emotions ran high as family members took the stand. >> not a day goes by without him being my first thought waking up and my last thought going to bed. >> reporter: court documents show carter via text message repeatedly encouraged roy to take his own life. asking him, when are you going to do it? stop ignoring the question. when roy seemed hesitant she wrote, you just need to do it, conrad. on july 13th, 2014, roy sat in this kmart parking lot outside of boston and killed his grandfather's pickup truck with carbon monoxide. at one point he got scared and stepped out of the car, but carter told him to get back in, a choice the judge used toen could school district her. and while carter's attorney argues she should be given probation due to mental issues. >>

head to court next week over her allegations that a deejay touched her inappropriately while they posed for a photo. nbc's joe fryer has the latest on that. joe, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning. the civil trial which starts monday pits taylor swift against david mueller. swift says he groped her, mueller says that's not grew and the allegation cost him hr his job. this morning court documents are giving us a preview of what's to come at the trial. >> for taylor swift this will be a whole new stage, the 27-year-old pop star is expected to testify in a federal court room. the case stems from a 2013 incident. swift says before a concert in denver she was groped by radio host david mueller while posing for a picture. court documents say swift will testify that mueller put his hand under her dress and grabbed her bare behind. swift never reported the incident to police but her manager did tell mueller's radio

remember that broke out overnight in one of the tallest apartment buildings. flames shot from the upper haft of the 86-story torch tower in dubai. people had to rope off blocks around the building as burning debris fell to the ground. officials say thankfully there were no casualties. they credit smoke opinion free escape routes inside that luxury tower. the cause of the fire is under investigation. that same building was badly damaged by a fire just two years ago. newly released video has led to even more troubling questions about a big city police department that is already facing some controversy. stephanie gosk is in baltimore. stephanie, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. this is the second police body camera video that the public defenders office here in baltimore says appears to show multiple officers working together to manufacture evidence. we spoke exclusively with the woman arrested in that video. the charges against her have been dropped. >> you can't walk out your door without feeling like you are a victim.
