this happened yesterday afternoon in bethesda in a church parking lot. we will show you video of the damage you will see. you will notice the windshield cracked. both the man and women are 86 years old. police who live nearby, or people rather who live nearby say there's a lot of traffic in this area. >> you have to be careful, yeah, because it's a busy street. i was surprised it happened in the parking lot. people should be looking. i don't know. i don't know. i don't know what to say. >> the couple was attending a funeral for the church's former minister. we are told the driver did stay on scene. d.c. police are taking action after one of their officers wore a t-shirt that some call

the officer you see in the picture is on desk duty. he was an arresting officer in a gun dismissing case, and that case was dismissed because of the t-shirt. a man was found dead on saturday. the small town is just across the d.c. line. police say it has been four, maybe five years since they last investigated a homicide in mt. rainier. long time residents are shocked and say their community is like a family. >> it's one of the small communities, and it was like a family, we were all a family. >> the man's identity has not yet been released. and then we're told the er

passenger is dead. police say the driver hit a parked car and ran away from the scene. officers eventually caught up with the driver. you can see it on florida avenue. and then three u.s. marines went missing saturday after their plane crashed into the sea off of the coast of australia. the marines were in an osprey aircraft like you see there on its final approach to an american airline carrier, and 26 were onboard and 23 were rescued. the bombing of a mosque is being called an attack on their community. it happened yesterday just before morning prayer. the blast was from

explosive device and it caused a fire inside the imam's office. the motive and whether it was a hate crime has not yet been determined. and then baltimore police say a 24-year-old man was shot around 5:00, and a 37-year-old man was shot just before 10:00 last night. before yesterday it was reported 210 homicides since the beginning of the year. and then yesterday they presented johnson's family with a memorial ghost bike. the family plans to decorate the all-white bike and place it

isolated showers and thunderstorms. after 8:00 or 9:00, and possibly later, but there are a few thunderstorms popping in the corridor after 8:00 p.m. through the over night we will see a few isolated showers, and hopefully tomorrow morning's commute will be a-okay, and take the umbrella because we have scattered showers and thunderstorms all throughout the day as the warm front lifts through the area and then a cold front will come through. the humidity will drop as we get to tuesday. tomorrow your commute a little on the stormy side. again, here we go, looking at this we have a chance for storms all throughout the day. and then we return to much nicer conditions on tuesday and wednesday before more storm chances toward the end of next week. >> soak up today, humidity coming up

the "reporter's notebook." >> it's difficult to characterize the shock and the outrage and the horror over the child sex abuse case involving a track coach. carlos bell faces 100 counts and deliberately trying to infect them with hiv. tracy you have been covering the story and one of the questions everybody is asking, of course, is how parents and others could have missed this? how it could have gone on for two years without being exposed? how did teachers and administrators and everybody miss it? >> we are starting to see the charles county school system wants to figure that out and the first thing they did in terms of the staff is remove the principal from the middle school in charles county to give them an opportunity to give the kids

of the school year. we saw this ripple affect where principals and teachers were removed, and schools -- the school system is still suffering, the backlash of having so many qualified teachers taken out, and the question is how many people did know about it? it appears after he was first placed on administrative leave, the students were talking about it long before the charges were made public, and long before he was arrested, the kids knew something about it. so now the question is, why aren't more coming forward? why aren't more cooperating? the less press conference we heard earlier this week the charles county states attorney said they have 24 victims and most of the victims they have seen on video, and 11 still have not been identified, and that te

not coming forward and not saying this happened to me. i talked with a counselor who said they believe the part of the sigma associated with the case. we are talking about the possibility of a hiv transmission and all of these things being an issue for these kids and their families and possibly to the point that parents don't know or don't want to put the kids more through more than what they are already dealing with. >> parents want something done and changes made and something has been done and the principal has been removed and there's an investigation under way. there are questions about why it took so long to unveil the charges against him. what generally happens and what should happen in a case like this? >> there's an appeals process for an employee, so there's an appeals process to make sure their rights are protected. i am not sure what

case -- those are just the cases we know about. we know cases are slipping through the cracks. pw bureaucratic snafus where they don't lose their licenses. and there are so many other cases happening in our area, the charles county case is the tip of the iceberg. >> tracy, we know of the 24 about half of them have not yet been identified. you mentioned that maybe there's concern and hesitation about coming forward, and is it possible parents may not even know that their children have

been victimized? >> there are cases where the kids say i am not a victim, and i have talks to folks where they are getting calls from the fbi saying we found pictures with your kids. parents who don't know in some of these instances. it's so important for parents to sit down with these kids if they had this man as a track coach or if he was an administrative aide to have eye contact and a conversation to use your words and ask the questions and watch how your child reacts. the only person who understands if your child has been a victim of something like this, it's the parent. you are the only one that can see the signs, and if you missed it you need to go back and take another look because this is a serious case and these charges of trying to transmit

illness and it's imperative parents find out if your child was a victim. >> a couple victims have been tested and do we know there's more testing? >> they are not releasing that information. i had one official working closely with the case telling me they hope they will never say how many of these victims did contract hiv, and it's a privacy and personal health issue, and if anybody ever came forward they don't want anybody to have that stigma associated, so they are probably never going to answer that question for us publicly, but i will say this, because you ask how was it allowed to happen? i have been told by one source close to the investigation, they are calling bell a master groomer, that he was really good at disarming these kids and that like most predators he gives them what they want and what they need to see, and chooses the

it's like picking somebody in a relationship, and you know who you are going to connect with and who you are going to manipulate, and he could tell, okay, you are probably going to be a problem or not. >> this grooming is a major issue. we have done a number of stories about child sex predators in the classroom and we go to the parents and communities and they kick back at first not believing it's possible that everybody's favorite teacher or trusted coach could do something wrong. and groomers are pop thrular, a they do pick kids that others won't believe. it's a red flag. >> we have got to take a break and we'll be right back.

will the shake-up at the va medical district help fix what ails the facility. your i-team scott first reported the story, and we have a new inspector general's report, and what did it show? what was going on at the hospital? >> a mess is the right word. the director was moved down to the street to a high profile job at headquarters, so he was under scrutiny after our i-team reports. there was a cockroach infestation in the kitchen, and holes in the wall and cracks in the walls in

the inspector general report released tuesday of last week found out sensitive v information was being sent to a wife's e-mail account. and now under congressional investigation as well now. and the i-team found there was a patient's body that went undiscovered for two days out in the working lot. there are va medical facilities in every community in america and maryland, virginia, d.c., and throughout the country, you can't have unacceptable practices inside the medical center down the road from the white house and down the road from agency headquarters. >> so aside from the praarking t security being beefed up, what other steps can be

where they had to shut down an operating room because the air-conditioning was not working inside. there's investigators on site to monitor what is going on, and it's the new interim director that will have to do something to change the culture and the practices of the facility. the deadliest road in the region, that's what aaa is saying about indian head highway, root 210. another crash on wednesday brought the death toll to five just this year, and there have been more than a dozen fatal accidents in five years, and just two weeks ago two men died on a wrong-way crash on 210. what do police believe is contributing to all of the fatal accidents on 210 and what do they plan to do about it? >> on 210 for some reason you have the worst of everything happening on that stretch of roadway. it's long,

it has multiple lanes. the speed limit in most of the sections are 45 miles per hour, and people go sometimes twice as fast. they made 2,400 traffic stops on 210. that's just prince georges county, and not talking about what state police have done. last year they made 3,500 in the whole of the year, and they are on track to do twice as many stops on 210, and we have road rage and speeders and dui and drunk driving. there's a mix of all of this stuff that makes for a dangerous roadway. >> and there's construction. >> yeah, long-term construction. there are lanes closed and the accident that happened on palm road happened near the construction site as well, and there was a motorcyclist killed, the fourth in four years where that has happened. what the princor

have more vehicles down, and more marked vehicles, and aaa said that's what they need to do. what we need is a road with a culture change. my theory, and i'm not an expert, but what i have always said, where you cover violent accidents, people have long commutes. they come from the district and by the time they get closer to home they are speeding to get there, and they are tired and worn out and their patience is gone. it's the culture. >> i could buy that, but i know for a fact that it happens in the morning on the way to work, so it's not just at the end of the day. >> waking up angry. >> we all know it's happening and we could put data behind it and state

police, and single-car accidents are distracted driving, and it's a recipe for what we are seeing on indian head highway. >> speed cameras? >> they can't affording to maryland law, and only around schools in maryland. >> and on the beltway? >> right. it's something that some of the folks we talked to brought up and said we would love to see them do that here because it could be a big help to change the culture here for sure. >> there's deep frustration over cancels plans to relocate the fbi headquarters, and the gsa is drawing up a new plan during a bipartisan senate committee, and the agency agreed to come up with a workable solution, and the u.s. senator from maryland urged them to get this project back on track. everybody was

this, and a few people can accept it. what do we know about any plans in these meetings, scott? >> out of the senate committee hearing on wednesday, the general services administration would come up with a new plan in 120 days, which is four months, and the new plan is not a site location or building size but it's a new theory how to do it, and the old theory was a building swap. what gsa now has to do is come up with a new theory and concept but not a new site location and not shovels in the ground, that's years away. >> the thing that is interesting about the meeting they had was part of it was to figure why this fell apart. to think about all the money shovelled into the project, to see this happen, to see a new fbi headquarters created, and the stuff that was spent to make it happen and then for the federal government to s

forward let's take a look at how it fell apart. it's amazingly frustrating for jurisdictions to be able to depend on the federal government to do what it says it's going to do. this is something that happens in private industry, not in the federal government. it's a frightening ordeal. >> it a dispute in the federal government, and it's congress not giving enough money to the administration to do it, and it's not that the federal government failed to help local communities, it's the federal governments arguing with itself over how to help communities which is a more difficult problem. >> i know for leaders in prince georges it's back to the drawing board. >> yeah, back to the drawing board. it's going to be years again before we know what happens next. >> tracy and scott, thank you. thank you, that's "reporters notebook." i am pat lawson muse, and "news4 today" continues.

an elderly couple injured after a car struck them in the church parking lot in bethesda. the 86-year-old man and woman are listed in serious condition. prince georges county police are searching for a suspect in a rare homicide case, and a man was found dead in mt. rainier yesterday. it has been four or five years since the last homicide investigation in their small town and the man's identity has not been released. and then the recovery mission for three u.s. marines missing off the coast of australia after their plane crashed into the sea. their next of kin have been notified. we have a lot going on on this sunday morning, including a beautiful sunrise right behind us. hope you are having a

three weeks after that home in florida collapsed due to a sinkhole, it's growing and more homes have been condemned. right now officials are waiting for geologists to determine if the sinkhole is active. a third home could soon be condemned. clean up was supposed to begin on friday but that was delayed when a section of the sinkhole collapsed on thursday. big changes could come to i-95. the 95 corridor coalition is moving forward with testing in delaware and pennsylvania on a system that would charge drivers based on the number of miles traveled. that would be a replacement for or addition to the gas tax. this is meant to convince drivers and transportation officials that the gas tax will not provide the money needed for maintenance and repairs. fire investigators are working to learn what may have
