>> and i'm angie goff. we want to kick off news4 midday with a forecast. no strong storms in the future, right, sheena? >> no strong storms in the forecast and in fact the rain that we had yesterday, that's all really pushed down to our south. here's a look at satellite and radar. no rain around except in parts of maryland but that's closer to the eastern shore and southern delaware. we have a lot of cloud cover in place, pretty much locked in but we'll see gradual clearing waez go through the afternoon. it's also holding the temperatures down. we haven't really warmed up much. mid to low 70s currently but as we go through the afternoon, once we start to see breaks of sunshine, we should be right around 80 degrees. pool forecast looks better later today. you'll see more peeks of sunshine around. and by 4:00 p.m., we'll have even more sun trying to develop. wait until you see tomorrow's forecast. i'll show you that coming up. a wild storm whipped its way through

shore. it was so strong, it actually picked up a car and flipped it over. crews are trying to figure out if the storm was indeed a tornado. news4's justin finch has been checking out the damage. what are you seeing there today? is justin there? all right. justin is gathering news, so we're going to get back to him. right now, you saw our tweet from nbc washington yesterday. now we're finding out more about a violent wreck. this is the scene on riggs road near mistletoe place, not far from the beltway. prince george's county police say a man was killed in the two-car crash just after 8:00 this morning. we're still working to learn his identity. another driver is in the hospital. he's expected to be okay. today, we will find out how prince george's county kept you and your family safe during a violent month of july. last month, there were 13 murders in the first 13 days of the month in prince george's

murders, police officers started working 12-hour shifts. police maintain the murder rate is still on par with last year. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins says they plan to announce their crime crackdown was a success. for more information on this upcoming announcement, you can check twitter. just in from our northern virginia bureau, a judge has decided that the man accused of shooting a woman during this road rage incident in alexandria will stay behind bars. last month, prosecutors say that he shot a woman after a confrontation here on the eisenhower connecter near the beltway. the woman who was shot is expected to be okay. the next time you head to an atm, you may want to pay close attention to it and that's because fairfax county police say they're seeing more cases of atm skimmers. thieves use them to steal bank

card numbers. the latest happened last week. it was accompanied by a pin-hole size camera that was capable of recording a hand tapping out the pin number. here are some tips to avoid becoming a victim of an atm skimmer. police say pull on the card reader to see if it's loose or tampered with. there could be signs of glue on the atm which is used to attach to the devices and you should also use atms that are within eyesight of the cashier. police believe those are less likely to be messed with. the trump administration is dealing with two military issues this morning. one involves the possibility of air strikes targeting isis in the philippines. the other, more marines headed to afghanistan. news4's tracie potts has details. >> reporter: defense officials say dozens of marines are headed to afghanistan and they're asking for more air support as president trump and his national security team work

white house. you can see the faces and back stories of the men and women involved. a wild storm whipped its way through maryland's eastern shore, as we told you a moment ago. a storm so strong, it flipped cars. crews are still trying to figure out whether it was a tornado that hit in salisbury. news4's justin finch has that story now. >> reporter: as the national weather service surveys the storm damage, salisbury is cleaning up, working to clean out these trees, cut up branchs and toss out debris, working to get this community back to normal. this surveillance video gives a glimpse of how strong this wind was. outside hoppers tap house off route 13 monday afternoon, right by salisbury university. the morning after, stray debris lies outside hopper's locked doors, roped off behind firefighters tape. >> we were standing outside and

heard was this really loud crack of noise. >> reporter: shelby says she found herself outside just as the wind and rain began picking. >> all i did was look up and just saw the tree just go boom, and it just fell in the house. the people inside the house were fine. thank god. but they had to leave the house. >> reporter: a busy day ahead for a clean-up and power crews working in salisbury's princeton home section where huge trees came crashing down. at least two homes are now condemned, a business levelled. city officials say a severe weather alert went out with flooding expected. once the storm passed, the mayor says county, city and utility crews got right to work. >> i walked the streets last night around 7:00 or 8:00. our crews were out here. we had 40 or 50 employees from our field operations document

news4 has learned that another top d.c. official is under scrutiny for accepting illegal campaign contributions. his campaign allegedly accepted at least $3,500 in excessive contributions. contributions are limited by law to just $1,000. it's now the focus of a review by the d.c. office of campaign finance, some donors have received refunds, and you can read more on this probe and other city officials under review in the nbc washington app. google is one of the most valuable companies in the world. processing trillions of search results every year, but now, google is facing new criticism over an internal document written by a google employee alleging that men are better at tech jobs than women. it's generated quite an uproar inside the company and now the company is taking action. nbc business correspondent jolene kent has the story. >>ep

with a crisis gone viral after what's being called a sexist manifesto written by a male google engineer leaked to the press. the 3,000-word internal memo alleges male and female tech workers differ due to biological causes, that women are more prone to anxiety and look for work-life balance while men have a higher drive for status and diversity efforts are bad for business. according to bloomberg, that engineer was fired overnight for perpetuating gender stereotypes. nbc news has not independently confirmed his termination. google ceo sundar pichai responded, saying, the manifesto violated its code of conduct and crossed the line. google added, we are unequivocal in our leaf that diversity and inclusion and are critical to our success as a company. the labor department is already suing google o

systemic compensation disparities against women across the workforce. google denies the allegations. engineer kate houston worked at google in canada, london, and australia from 2011 to 2014. she left because of what she felt was a misogynistic culture. >> i'm just kind of tired of it. these things keep happening as the details change, but like, this obsessive push event is that women shouldn't be engineers, that whooer we're not welcome. >> reporter: the controversy at google comes just months after uber ousted its ceo, following allegations of discrimination and harassment at the company. fowler reacted to the google drama tweeting that while she worked at uber, she was once told by human resources there were many white men in engineering because white men were simply more suited for engineering than others. uber declined to comment on the tweet but called her original allegations abhorrent and against everything uber stands

having a pet does not improve the mental or physical health of children. that's according to a new study from the rand corporation. researchers looked at thousands of households with and without pets and they found that children from pet-owning families did have better overall health, but after considering 100 other variables like income, housing type, and language skills, those health advantages disappeared. experts say future research could look at the longer-term effects of pet ownership. well, they make you feel good. >> yes, they do. >> they make you happy. >> and they say you live longer with plants and animals. >> that's right. clear the shelters is coming up and i think my kids have seen the commercials because they want to go. >> it's going to be very exciteding. clear the shelters is saturday, august 19, so it's the initiative to get

hour. that's a slightly cooler wind direction. the rain was all part of a cold front but you see here we have the clouds around. the rain is going to stay well to the south. that front is already moving through but the clouds are still lingering. we have a back edge to those clouds. we won't really see it until later on today. if you're planning on grilling out this afternoon, perfect for the grill, 3:00 p.m., dry, clouds are still going to be around in some areas. more clearing as we get closer to 5:00, even 7:00 p.m. temperatures topping out around the low 80s. future weather, trying to clear the clouds out slowly but this leads us to a beautiful day tomorrow. if you're lucky now have have a tee time or if your kids are in golf camp, it's going to look good. 7:00 a.m., 65 degrees in the morning, that's a pretty crisp start. then we go into the afternoon, 85 for a high. thursday looks really good and there are the rain chances tiday throughhe weekend.

this is monumental. land o'lakes, florida, is in danger of becoming known for a giant sinkhole than its sunny skies and waterways. the sinkhole has already swallowed two homes and several other nearby have been condemned. kerry sanders reports. >> reporter: this morning, new urgency for residents living around this massive sinkhole near tampa. five more homes have now been condemned and are slated for decimallation, officials finding new cracks in foundations and sidewalks. >> very sad. it's a

>> a sinkhole. >> reporter: seven homes in all now falling victim to this house-eating natural disaster. >> this used to be where the house was. the house itself is now gone. the pool still stands. >> reporter: frantic emergency operations are now underway in an effort to shore up the home, dumping tons of limestone along its edges, in this part of florida known as sinkhole alley. water from too much rain or dry drought conditions can dissolve the underground layers, forming a sinkhole. 76 years ago, there was a large lake here. over time, it was filled in. the lake getting smaller, becoming orange groves, then vacation homes, and eventually the houses that are here now. scientists are now wondering if the neighborhood's history may have played a role in the formation of this monster sinkhole. the residents who live in this area are now wondering why their mortgage companies did not require sinkhole insurance. of cour

get it. kerry sanders, nbc news, land o'lakes, florida. >> well, that's an awful story. reuniting with a lost loved one helps you feel whole again. that's how these veterans feel after being reunited with their purple heart medals. a nonprofit group helps track down lost medals and return them to the men and women who earned them. as part of a national purple heart day ceremony in new york yesterday, eight lost medals were returned to veterans or their families. a lot of teenagers spend the summer relaxing or taking a part-time job like baby sitting or delivering pizza. >> lifeguarding also, right? but some students are getting a jump start on their future and using their free time to learn how to become doctors. erica edwards shows us how they're getting ahead of the class. >> reporter: a careful incision, not by an

americans have now accumulated the most credit card debt in u.s. history. a report from the fed shows consumers have $1.02 trillion in outstanding credit card debt. that's as of june, and it's topping the previous record set in 2008. credit card debt has been growing at an annual rate of about 5%. one reason is lenders are giving consumers,especially those with subprime or below average credit scores, more access to credit cards. and some pizza news you can use. little ceasar's has a way for you to pick up your order. the chain has unveiled a pizza portal in about a dozen restaurants in tucson,

here's how it works. you order and pay for your food with the app and get a three-digit code, scan the code at your local store, opening a self-service hot box with your pizza. they plan to roll the pizza portal out nationwide next year. it's one of the most popular series on television right now, and it appears that some of its scripts have been leaked online. hackers going by the name mr. smith have posted stolen scripts of some of the game of throa thrones episodes. the hackers are demanding hbo pay a ransom of several million dollars to prevent further releases. the network says it is continuing to investigate with place and cyber security experts. and it is getting harder to tell if a film is a sequel or reboot of the original these days. and in this week's home video review, you can decide. here's nbc's raphael
