sterling's friends say they are hea heart dbroken and d.c.'s mayor wants trainer off the force. >> the fact that we have no indictment and no charges being filed against this murderer. >> mpd has already reached out to his lawyers asking the officer to resign. >> what about you, what do you think? >> that is exactly what i think. >> well, the police union says it is standing behind officer trainer while the sterling family has filed a $50 million lawsuit against the district and mpd. covering the district, take a look at this crash, we're working to learn what caused a driver to gee off the road and run into a row house in georgetown. this happened last night near the intersection of 23rd and q. no one was hurt and we're told the impact didn't do any structural damage to the homes. today marks one year since wouldn't deadliest explosions in our area. seven people were killed at the flower branch a

and two of them were children. derrick ward just spoke with some of the first responders about that night. >> reporter: it was the rudest of awakenings, the august 10th, 2016 explosion that ripped through the apartment building on arlos avenue. >> not traditionally do you see an entire four store apartment building fully ablaze. maybe an apartment or two, maybe a floor, maybe the roof, sure, but not the entire four stories of the entire building. >> reporter: it was clear an explosion had come first. looking at the debris field, interior fixtures an alonginalo. just before midnight, it was clear there were going to be casualties. but given the magnitude, casualties were inevitable regardless of the hour. 12 midnight or 12 noon. >> injuries would have been different.ists on the street as well as some still in the building. >> reporter: agencies like police, fire and social services

worked together well at the scene and coordinating information to help locate those who left and those who didn't make it out, though it still took days with dna evidence providing the only clue in some cases to who had perished. but amid all the losses -- are the stories of miraculous rescues. especially the infant togsssed from a window, eventually reunited with his parents. those are the things lodged in the memories of those who lived it. >> within the fire service, you see events, you have career changing events and events that you remember always. this will be one of them. >> reporter: later today, there will be a vigil held for the victims of this fire and explosion one year ago. we still a wait the report from the ntsb to definitively say what caused it. in silver spring, derrick ward, "news 4 today".

the world is watching the tensions rise between the north korea and united states. kim jong-un's regime says it plans to file four missiles toward guam possibly before the end of this month. the pentagon says it already has a preemptive plan if president trump orders the attack. this comes after the president warned north korea that threats would be met with fire and fury. in guam yesterday, secretary of state rex tillerson said traditional diplomacy just won't work. >> what is the president is doing is sending a strong message to north korea in language that kim jong-un would understand because he doesn't seem to understand diplomatic language. >> mr. tillerson says he doesn't think there is any immediate threat and on bbc radio overnight, one of president trump's deputy assistants said the u.s. would use, quote, any appropriate measures to protect itself. negotiate don't

negotiate. >> well, if you were driving past the quhowhite house, you m somewhere seen these protests calling for a return to diplomatic talks. in addition to the rally here in d.c., other demonstrators held a similar protest in new york. he was fired for poor leadership and now the former director of d.c.'s v.a. hospital is back on the payroll. brian hawkens was filed after audits found mismanagement at the facility. he appealed the decision to the merit systems protection board and now that board is requiring to keep him as an employee until the claim is reviewed. h hau hawkens will not work directly with patients. new this morning, it looks like there was no winner in last night's powerball jackpot, which means you still have a chance to rake in a huge pot of money. the next drawing is saturday night and right now the estimated jackpot is $356 million. don'or

week. and after being on the run for two days, the suspect was captured yesterday. hurricane franklin made landfall along the coast of mexico overnight. these are pictures before the hurricane made landfall. people were preparing for the worst which is always a good move. the hurricane had maximum winds of 85 miles per hour. this is the second landfall on mexican territory in three days. and as we head further through the months of august and september, i'm sure, chuck, we'll see a lot more stories like that. >> unfortunately the peak of hurricane season is usually the first week of september. so we still have a little ways to go before we get to what is normally the peak of tropical activity. but based on sandy, we can get tropical storms way down into the month of october. stars franklin goes, there is the satellite picture and way down there to the bottom center of your screen, that is fnk

peninsula of mexico there, so it is indeed a diminishing threat to life and property. that is excellent news. for us, we have this cluster of showers in eastern kentucky, they are drifting northbound up into southern west virginia now. the air mass over us is relatively dry. so it will eat up most of those rain chances as they try to come in to the area. we'll be dry in the d.c. metro area for sure all the way through the daylight hours today. future weather, a gradual increase in cloud cover during the course of the afternoon today. again partly to mostly sunny for at least 3 2:00, 3:00. and then we go from partly to mostly cloudy. here is 8:00 tonight and it does hint that there could be a few isolated rain showers here primarily in the shenandoah valley and mountains of west virginia, that is 8:00 tonight. not much of a rain threat between now and then. temperature-wise, 50s and 60s again this morning. a very comfortable way to get the day started. date will be filled with sunshine for the first part

at the live desk. >> chris, what's developing out of cuba? >> this is pretty strange. a series of strange incidents. americans serving in cuba say they had physical reactions to something at the u.s. embassy. the state department says multiple people came back to the states for medical reasons, but the exact cause of it isn't really clear. apparently this all started late last year and because of it, u.s. officials have asked two cuban officials here in washington to leave. aaron. all right, chris, thank you. today marks one year since a deadly explosion in our area. two children were among the seven people who died at the flower branch apartments in montgomery county. it was an incident that changed the lives of everyone involved. that was one of the emotional moments we witnessed. an infant reunited with his parents after being tossed from a window to safety. and those memories are l
