>> reporter: north korea's military is upping the ante making new threats against the united states saying they hope to be able to attack this region by mid august if their military leaders accept it. this morning the small island of guam is said to be a target. this american territory facing an elevated threat as the war of words between the united states and north korea reaches a fever pitch. the north korean regime responding to president trump's chilling warning. >> they will be met with fire and fury. >> reporter: calling the presidency nile, saying he was cooped up at the golf course and was clueless about how things are developing. adding sound dialogue is not possible with someone as bee left of reason as president trump and only absolute force can work on him. north korea now warning they are seriously examining plans to attack guam where close to

american service members are stationed and home to 160,000 u.s. citizens. located just 2,200 miles away from north korea in the pacific, the threats putting some residents here on edge. >> i'm alarmed. i'm concerned, but we mustn't be intimidated. >> reporter: now two u.s. senior military officials and two senior retired officers tell nbc's cynthia mcfadden the pents gone has prepared a preemptive strike plan if the president orders one. for months u.s. forces have been training with recently updated b-1 bombers located on guam. multiple sources say the planes, which are not nuclear capable, would target two dozen of north korea's missile launch sites and support facilities. since the end of may the b-1s have conducted 11 practice runs, including one

round trips and refueling in midair, preparing for a possible operation as north korea missile tests put the u.s. on alert, but this morning military experts say an attack on guam isn't likely, with officials urging the public to remain calm. analysts believe guam could be a target because of its close proximity to north korea and because of all of the military muscle on this island, but it's that same muscle which stands to protect this region. there are b bombers in this area, a nuclear submarine and missile defense system that is poised to protect everyone who lives here. savannah and matt, back to you guys. >> thank you. so just what led to president trump's stern warning to north korea and what has the reaction been like inside the administration. andrea mitchell is nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent. andrea, good morning. >> good morning, matt. it was the threat heard around the world. a u.s. president for the first time suggesting what s

now it turns out without language carefully agreed to by his national security team. president trump aides say becoming increasingly fired up over north korea until he fired off this stark warning during a meeting on opioids. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> reporter: was he reading from a script? no, say aides, that piece of paper was a fact sheet on opioids. nor did the president check with his generals before threatening kim jong-un. former general mattis at the pentagon who has said war with north korea would be catastrophic. general h.r. mcmaster expected at bedminster today. or retired general john kelly the new chief of staff, the white house stating wednesday he knew the tone and strength of what the president would say but not the words, those were the

critics called it too aggressive. >> i'm very concerned about the level of rhetoric that president trump employed concerning north korea. >> reporter: half a world away in asia the president's top diplomate was tasked with quieting the storm. >> i think americans should sleep well at night. i have no concerns about this particular rhetoric. >> reporter: but no sooner had the secretary of state calmed things down, then the defense secretary fired it back up, warning north korea to cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people, plus the president tweeting, my first order as president was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal, it is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before. in fact, mr. trump signed a memo in january to study modernizing the nuclear arsenal, but not much more. the state department still claims everyone is on the same page. >> we can speaking with one voice. >> is he exacerbating

>> reporter: u.s. troops here exercise with south korean allies regularly, there is another one planned later this month. north korea says these are provocative, south korea that they're vital. its president now calling for a complete overhaul of south korea's military. the war on words putting this city on edge, like the american troops here to protect them, they've lived for decades with threats from the north, but in any conflict they'd likely be the first casualty. the unthinkable this morning perhaps just a little closer. well, south korea's president today saying stop. stop ratcheting up the tension. it was a mention directed at the north, but it's one that many in asia are also privately directing at president trump. matt, savannah. >> bill neely, thank you. even as the north korean crisis plays out we are learning about a series of

incidents in cuba. u.s. diplomats in havana sent openly after apparently suffering hearing problems and some other symptoms and officials say this was caused by a deliberate covert attack. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has the latest on this. peter, try to explain this for us. >> reporter: this one is bizarre. it reads like a cold war spy novel, one government official says the incidents were so severe that some u.s. diplomats needed to get hearing aids. it comes as the relations between the u.s. and cuba had started to improve, but now the future of diplomacy between the two countries seems uncertain. this morning new questions about just what happened in cuba after a string of bizarre incidents that apparently left a group of american diplomats in havana with severe hearing loss attributed to a covert sonic device. >> it is a cause of great concern for us, it's caused a variety of physical symptoms in these american citizens who work for

we take those incidents very seriously and there is an investigation currently under way. >> reporter: the a.p. reporting the incidents saying that after months of investigation u.s. officials speaking on the condition of anonymity had concluded that the diplomats had been exposed to an advanced device that operated outside the range of sound and had been deployed inside or outside their residences. it was not immediately clear if the device was a weapon used in a deliberate attack or had some other purpose. the state department saying only the diplomats suffered a ma right of physical symptoms. >> one of the things we talk about here often is that the safety and security of american citizens at home and abroad is our top priority. >> reporter: cuba saying it's investigating the incidents and that, quote, cuba has never nor would it ever allow that the cuban territory be used for any action against accredited diplomatic agents or their families. the incidents took place in the fall of 2016 shortly after the u.s. embassy in havanaeo

efforts to resume diplomatic relations with cuba after decades of hostility. that relationship now in jeopardy. the state department saying two cuban diplomats were expelled from their embassy in washington back in may. >> as a result of that we've asked two cubans to leave the united states and they have. >> in other words, this is a reciprocity thing. >> i'm not going to call it as such but we asked two people to go home. >> reporter: president trump actually rolled back parts of president obama's policy toward cuba, though some elements remained in place including the reopening of the u.s. embassy in havana. the florida senator marco rubio whose parents fled cuba weighed in on this topic saying personal harm to u.s. officials shows the extent the castro regime will go and clearly violates international norms. >> peter alexander, thank you. the white house is also dealing with major new developments in the russia investigation. fbi agents recently

we have this cold front and this is moving eastward, that's going to be the reason why we will see those storms fire up, especially this afternoon and evening. beside the cloud to ground lightning the biggest threat will be hail and possibly damaging winds. as we go into friday some of these storms will move into the tennessee river valley, into ohio as well and then they will start to spread eastward as we go into saturday. scattered showers and storms possible up and down the east coast so it does look a little unsettled as we start off the weekend. this is the area east of denver into most of kansas and down into oklahoma where we could see some of those isolated strong storms today. your local forecast is coming up in the next 30 seconds.

be on the stand as early as today. joe friar is at the courthouse in denver. >> reporter: taylor swift's mother took the stand offering emotional testimony. she did not witness the alleged groping and was not in the room at the time but said she believes her daughter. fighting tears at times she testified about what happened before her daughter's denver concert. i saw her face and i could tell there was something wrong. she said a guy just grabbed my behind. taylor swift said it happened while posing for this photo with radio dj. the picture was sealed by the court but published last year by tmz. andrea swift started to cry saying tailor couldn't believe that after the incident she thanked them for being there. no one from swift's team called police. why? i didn't
