chopper 4 went inside the beltway. we had an earlier crash. thapgful thankfully, all the delays have relaxed. seat pleasant police chief, devon martin, is in stable condition after a scary crash. he was thrown from his motorcycle while on patrol. megan mcgrath with more. >> reporter: guys, that good news came down late last night that seat pleasant police chief, devon martin, seems to be in stable condition. he is conscious and talking with his family. he was on patrol on his police-issued motorcycle on martin luther highway when he complieded with collided with a car. the driver and other witnesses stopped and helped

prince george's police chief gave an indication last night that he is going to be okay. >> he is stable. he is conscious. he has some injuries. we do not know the full extent. they are still testing. his family is with him. he has not recovered obviously but he is on the road to recovery. >> the picture here of chief martin. this is very welcome news. initially, when the chief was brought here to the hospital, he was listed in critical condition. there was real concern about his welfare. now, he has been listed in stable condition, certainly an upgrade now. as for the cause of this crash, all of that is still under investigation. back to you guys. >> megan, thank you. we are also following a developing story out of bethesda. a walk through the woods leads to a discovery of a dead body. this happened yesterday near heather hill court.

person was walking in the woods there when they came across this body. investigators are still trying to identify that person. >> senseless, that's how police are describing the shooting of a teen driving down the street in the district. that 17-year-old girl is now in critical condition at the hospital. d.c. police say she was just driving along saratoga avenue northeast when she was caught in the cross fire. they do not think she was the intended target. another man was also shot. police are now looking for suspects driving in a tan or gold-colored honda accord with new jersey plates. ♪ one year after their world almost crumbled, members of the flower branch community gathered with songs, poems, a

with the aftermath. seven people died in an explosion last year. right now on the nbc washington app, you can see my story about the changes being made in response to the explosion. we are now learning about new developments in the north korea crisis. a report from reuters says the u.s. will not launch a preemptive strike without talking to south korea first. countries around the world are waiting to see if north korea will follow through with a detailed plan to fire missiles at guam. yesterday, the president reiterated his warning. >> i said it yesterday. i don't have to say it again. i'll tell you this. it may be tougher than i said, not less. it may very well be tougher than i said. >> president trump promised fire and fury if north korea makes more threat. there are almost 7,000 american troops on guam representing the air force, navy and coast guard. chris lawrence will tell us

as soon as today, we may find out whether the case against 16 penn state fraternity members will go to trial. they are charged in the hazing death of a pledge. 19-year-old tim piazza died in february after he consumed a le lethal amount of alcohol. we have learned that investigators in missouri have arrested a second man in connection with officer gary michael's death. late last night, detectives arrested william noble. they accused the man of killing officer michael

this might look like a regular dash cam video. it is the suspect behind the wheel here. she is in handcuffs. a utah highway patrol officer arecht arec arrested two people. they put one in the back and one in the front. the woman in the front was able to slide in the front seat and took off while the officer was questioning witnesses. the couple was eventually found. 6:14. this is video you have to see. a car fell off of a parking deck in texas and barely missed that suv. you can see the bmw come crashing to the ground. >> that video shows a lot of people that start coming to the rescue after this happened trying to help the driver that was pretty seriously hurt. the driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. this

have told you about this austin parking garage. you may remember these pictures from last year. in the last story, the driver managed to drive their car off the top level of the parking garage. it was like something from a movie. let's switch gears and talk about the weather. 2016 we know was anything but normal. a new report confirms it was the hottest year on record. 2016 also had the highest sea level and the lowest sea ice in the arctic and antarctic. researchers caused it a clear signal of human-caused climate change. it shows three hot years in a row is close to impossible to be a natural coincidence. >> i always get a lot of pushback on social media when

testimony continues in the taylor swift trial. she took to the witness stand yesterday. >> she is counter suing a denver d.j. who she says groped her at a meet and greet in 2015. she says it was a long grab. it wasn't an accident. the d.j. is suing her for $3 million because he was fired. swift is counter suing him for $1. she wants to prove a point that what he did to her was wrok angd does not want to settle the case. a county is being sued after a former teacher is convicted of child sexual abuse. he taught for nearly two decades at the elementary school in silver spring. the v

were multiple claims about him and he was warned more than once and the school district failed to act. montgomery county public school says it can't comment but it is committed to the safety an security of every student. this next story may surprise you. it is specially important for parents. a home daycare in chantilly is still allowed to operate even though the provider was arrested on sex crime charges. he is accused of improperly touching two girls. a judge has ordered him not to have contact with kids under the age of 13. his daycare license is still active. child care is permitted. under current department of social services rules, daycare inspectors must complete their own independent investigation before deciding whether a license should be revoked. >> we have to make a distinction between there being an allegation that someone has committed in act versus we are making the finding that they have, in fact

>> this week, the federal prosecutor said there is not enough evidence to convict him of any crime. therefore, there was no charge. there is an internal investigation into the incident. meanwhile, terrence sterling's family has filed a $50 million lawsuit against the police department. >> there is a ten-foot sinkhole filing a woman's garden. heavy rain caused the problem and the county says they are not responsible for what happened. the homeowner says she has no idea how expensive repairing this could be. >> i'm worried about the cost. >> in the chesapeake region, we get a lot of rain compared to other parts of the country. that water goes somewhere. >> so far, no other neighbors have had similar issues. the county is urging homeowners to watch out for repairs. now, to a story concerning lights thaar

hour. police chief deaf vovon martin stable condition after being thrown from his police motorcycle. there is some positive news this morning. megan? >> reporter: that's right. much better news here. that came down late last night. initially the chief was taken to the hospital in critical condition. there was a lot of concern for his welfare. late last night, word came down he was conscious and talking to his family. while he does have a lot of healing to do, ultimately, he is expected to be okay. now, chief devin martin, chief of the pleasant police department was thrown from his motorcycle. others came to his aid and emergency folks arrived on the scene. this happened w

colleagues and law enforcement, including county police chief hank sawinski have been coming to the hospital to see how chief martin is doing. >> reporter: it is difficult when any member of public safety becomes harm. it is nice to see the chief out in front leading on the streets. we didn't want him injured. his injuries were not as severe as we were led to believe initially. we are all very happy about that. >> reporter: very good news there. chief martin is expected to mauk a full recovery here. he does have some serious injuries and still is here at the hospital. >> what caused this crash? why did his motorcycle collide with the car? all part of the investigation. we are following a developing story in bethesda. a walk through the
